Modern Diplomacy Invitational Replacement
Would anyone be interested joining an in-progress Modern Diplomacy game? We are currently in 1998, in what was a high-quality game until Egypt suddenly disappeared.

Who would play a live game tonight?
I've come to realize that I don't have the patience for non-live games much. I need a minimum of 2 days/phase to have the free time to conduct diplomacy appropriately well, and that ends up being too long a game for me to maintain interest. However a live game (being no more than a 3-4 hr chunk of time) is pretty manageable. So I wanna play one.

Who's in?

I'm a Godfather!
I just became a Godfather and I'm wicked excited! With Christmas and his baptism coming up, I want to start thinking about things to do now and in the future. Obviously, it will largely depend on what the parents want, but I was hoping some people could share their thoughts on being a Godparent.
Thanks!

The Greatest People in History Tournament--Nominations
We've done Literature, we've done Music...so, since we're a history-happy lot, why not tackle the (impossible but fun) task of asking "Who was the better general, Alexander or Genghis Khan?" (Though bobgenghiskhan is clearly the answer.) 4 categories: Military/Political Leaders, Artists, Inventors/Scientists, and a "Grab-Bag" category, for all the folks who don't fit in elsewhere. Nominate 1 for each category, and we'll start when we have 64 (or 128, either way.)

Good win percentage
Hey,

So I'm relatively new to this game (played 5 and won 1 of them). What's a good win percentage as a rookie player? Trying to figure out if I suck or if I'm any good.

Not classic Diplomacy
So I'm new, and just finding my way here. But I've been playing Diplomacy for almost 40 years (anyone else here?)! the interesting thing about the greatest game ever invented by a mailman, is that the main object isn't really stabbing someone, but learning to work together. and being trustworthy. Unfortunately, that's not a version this site espouses! Too bad, but i find the site enjoyable anyway.

Need some intermediate players
Inspired by the "Not Classic Diplomacy" and "Good win percentages" threads, there is a 10 ante WTA game that we just need 4 more people for. Ideally for people who want to try to step up a level. gameID=151870

So, don't take the snark personally, but I feel compelled to ask:

Do you think other games aren't looking for serious play? Or that other games aren't for getting better and trying to win? I mean, if it was a much higher ante or password-protected with player screening to join it would lend a lot more credence. Otherwise I don't quite understand, are you actually betting 10 dollars? (which I wouldn't be opposed to actually)

No snark taken.

1) Am still learning the protocol for this site. Up until recently, have pretty much ignored the forums.
2) I thought a medium-low dollar buy-in for WTA would be a step up from PPSC, but I could be mistaken. Mainly wanted to attract intermediate without tempting the sharks to come in and having a feeding frenzy.
3) Never set up a password protected game before so I hadn't considered it. Don't really know enough people yet, but I suppose it couldn't hurt to keep a mental list of the people I've enjoyed playing with.
4) Cash bets would be fun, but I don't have a character insert for DipCoins, which was what I meant. Mods feel free to edit that dollar sign out with a (D) thingy.

Honestly, to me 10 webdippoints seems to be beginner territory still. I don't even think most newbies will check the game style. I suggested going with a 25 point bet to make the pot large enough to pull the victor out of newbie point range ( <100) with a bit of a cushion. But really, 101 D is the place where newbies no longer show up because they don't have that many points. Ever.

There might be some sharks joining the feeding frenzy, but that's not always a bad thing. You'll improve much more rapidly when confronting stronger opponents. I know I've still got a lot to learn.

You could also make the game non-anonymous. There is sometimes a tendency for players with fewer points to gang up on players with more points. Once the alphas are eliminated, the game evens out. And so, players with a big balance sometimes avoid those games because of that out-of-game consideration with respect to betting. That could be the way to attract intermediate players.

Or you could prey on the newbies once you see who they are. ;)

Okay, thanks Jeff. I will keep that in mind. Next one I will up the ante a little.

What do you mean by 101 (D)? You mean 101 and up ante games?

@Marquis: Organising games through the forum is a great idea.

Another thing that you can do is to run "semi-anon" games, where the players know who is in the game, but not who is playing which country. To do this, you advertise for players in the forum and collect names. Once the roster is set, you create the game and hand out passwords to the players via pm.

This is especially effective, as you can attract players who are interested in playing with new people this way.

Sorry I can't play in your game - I don't have the capacity for any more games right now. But, I'm interested, since we haven't played together before. And, I like your name :)
Shark checking in (well, not a true shark. I won't deem myself that good yet)

Don't listen about the points. Most games I play are less than 100 D buy-ins, and always among high quality opponents. If its password-protected, as you said it was, then points don't really matter when attracting top quality play. Most top quality players on the site don't really care about points anyways.
And Jeff was saying set the buy-in to 101 D so new people who join the site (and have the standard 100 D) can't get into the game

^ I agree with gold. Although I'm not a shark either, I don't care about the buy in, high or low (as long as I can afford it).

As he points out, you can set whatever criteria you like for password protected games, so the buy in shouldn't determine whether or not someone is a newbie.

Also, having a lot of points doesn't necessarily mean you're dangerous (although there's probably some correlation). Similarly, having few points doesn't mean you're a pushover. It could just mean you're awesome enough to invest all your points without your play suffering.

For this reason, I don't think I'd advocate ganging up on the players with lots of points - though if someone suggested that as a reason to ally with me against a third player, I wouldn't argue against it :)
Well, also some players with a lot of points create dummy games to hide their points in so it appears that they are lower ranked (and hence don't get ganged up on newbs)

"Although I'm not a shark either"

Not by a long shot. You're about as dangerous as (wait for it)....a tin can.

Nice, thanks for the tips here guys. The password games arranged off of the forum sounds like a good idea. I'm going to try that soon.

I like playing anonymous because then the name and win/draw/etc. rate isn't in the back of my mind. Although, I have been able to recognize some players from the press style.

Game stuck in PAUSE?
A game that involves me ("The classic Is the best") paused over the holiday and all players except one, who was last seen nearly two weeks ago, have long since voted un-pause. The remaining players would like to finish or draw the game.

Are we remaining 6 doomed to look at an unfinished game for eternity, should vanished player never return?
