D Day Anniversary
70 years ago today Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy facing an array of artillery, machine guns, mines and barbed wire. Boys as young as 15 or 16 fought on both sides.

The poop floor
As I was cleaning my litterbox, I discovered I sat in a pile of cat shit. I got it all over my shorts. When I checked if it did happen, I got it all over my hands. I've washed them 3 times and they still smell like cat shit.

Please advise.

french speaking replacement needed
as i will be absent for the next week and the last week of june and i'm only in one active game, i thought that i might as well look for a replacement player. it's a "speak french only" game though, so you'd have to understand at least a little bit of french.

Shootings and break-ins
So, my brother was there at the SPU school shooting today. Quite literally there... Scared the shit out of me when he wouldn't answer his freaking phone. Either way he's a-ok and that's what matters. My home also got broken into last night.... It's time to get a gun. For those that have one, suggestions?

In non winner-take-all game, can you solo with less than ALL the centers?
I want the solo win (and will have a majority of SCs soon). if I accept the draw once i get the majority, doesnt that mean i lose my solo? But do i really need to hold every single center to get the solo? How do you 'resign' ...so my opponents don't have to sit through the process that could take years?

Today is UN Peacekeeping Day. I'm posting about it here instead of a knew thread to avoid Santa noticing and getting cross with me
Octavious (2802 D)
29 May 14 UTC
What does one do for UN Peacekeeping Day? It is difficult to celebrate the Peacekeepers themselves, if only because the unique way the system works means that those wearing UN blue one year can be the exact same people causing the problems the next.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
29 May 14 UTC
It carries no less baggage than anyone's national armed forces day, surely.

Anyway, perhaps celebrate it by looking to the best. I encourage you to Google "Captain Mbaye Diagne"
Octavious (2802 D)
29 May 14 UTC
An interesting choice. I agree that Captain Mbaye Diagne did great things at high personal risk and deserves to be honoured. However he wasn't keeping the peace and was in direct violation of UN rules at the time.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
29 May 14 UTC
And yet the UN honors him now.

Don't let the past and present deficiencies of the UN get in the way of their potential.
Octavious (2802 D)
29 May 14 UTC
If our only measure was potential then the USA would almost be as awesome as krellin thinks it would be if krellin was in change. Besides, whilst I'm not entirely certain what UN Peacekeeping day is for, I'm pretty sure it isn't for imagining those future peacekeepers who may or may not die on our children's behalf.

The UN peacekeeping forces will never function well with the Security Council in its current form, and the only modifications I've heard talked about won't make it any better.

On a more positive note, they did sort of ok in Cyprus..
Thucydides (864 D(B))
29 May 14 UTC

Agreed that they are hamstrung by the security council, but if you think the UN Peacekeepers don't do anyone any good, you don't study African conflicts enough.

It's routine for UN-guarded bases to become the only relatively safe place that people fleeing from war can get to. If those people couldn't take shelter there, only God knows what would happen to them.

The conditions these people face even under the UN's limited protection are pitiful, but do not suggest that those peacekeepers die for nothing. Often peacekeepers are offenders themselves and pillage and rape too, but more often they do their job, such as it is, admirably. It isn't their fault they're hamstrung by the selfish Security Council.
Octavious (2802 D)
29 May 14 UTC
"Aside from the thieves, murderers and rapists they're a decent bunch" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. I agree that there are a healthy number of good eggs in their ranks, but that doesn't make a good organisation. At the end of the day the difference between a really good man watching a Serbian general slaughter civilians whilst crying inside, and an evil bastard watching the same slaughter and chuckling, is essentially nil. The UN needs to have the will and resources to act for its peacekeepers to be respected, and more often than not it has neither.

I salute your Captain Mbaye, who had the extreme courage to say "Sod the UN" and do what was right.

Thucydides (864 D(B))
29 May 14 UTC
It's more like, yes they have committed crimes, but all the more reason to call vigorous attention to that (as you can see I do not shy away from these facts), because the fact is, we need them. There is no credible alternative to UN Peacekeepers.

The alternative is ad hoc quasi-legal American and French expeditions. Is that what you'd prefer? Bangladeshis die in Congo so that Americans can fight imperialist wars elsewhere.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
29 May 14 UTC
And also, this idea that UN Peacekeepers are not authorized to do anything is increasingly a canard. In the DRC they offensively attacked and quelled a brutal rebellion, M23, and with significant firepower to boot.

There is a general understanding that the impotence of the Rwanda years will not do. Indeed, you asked what this day is meant to be for. According to the UN press itself, this year, the purpose is to draw attention to the UN's efforts to create a "force for the future" which can adequately respond to the atrocity we see continuing to afflict large swathes of the planet.
Octavious (2802 D)
29 May 14 UTC
It would seem that Obama's alternative is a $5 billion fund to finance the forces of those nations he supports. And those quasi-legal expeditions have often proven to be effective when without them there would have been nothing.

The UN's efforts to create a force for the future are akin to scattering the seeds before ploughing the field. You might get the odd success, but it will never be what is needed until the underlying problems have been solved.

Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between farmers and the local community, providing mutual benefits and reconnecting people to the land where their food is grown...

Sounds like Communism to me...

In other news Jamaica has been rated the 5th most miserable nation on the planet. Quite what has happened to make such a laid back nation suffer a wave of depression is beyond me. They must have had some really bad news quite recently...

Sorry, I'll behave now ;)

How about, for example, pretending to be terminal, though? Is that still fine?

In lue of that post your favorite or best games here. I'm up for reading some good stories.
