I think there is little justification for a cancel. Russia is only vote for it, because russia is losing.

Could players click ready asap PLEASE.

@Jesus
The disbanding or not of Armenia is not the big deal. It is the wasted season. Turkey is now racing Italy for spoils, and every move counts.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
03 Jun 11 UTC
@fiedler, though i'm not one of them, and thus it doesn't make a difference to me, clicking ready is not consider a requirement. If people choose to play a slow game then they can expect to play out every phase, that's what one signs up for...

also regarding the cancel. I have had a pm from russia on the matter. And losing or not the claim that austrian mishaps have 'ruined the game' will taint any victory. Still it is up to the players to vote unanimously for a cancel if they want one.

i take it from your words there is a 6 chances in 7 that you're one of the players (where each chance is 1/35963 :p )
Maniac (189 D(B))
03 Jun 11 UTC
@orathaic - I agree with you that players can click ready or not, however, i think if we play again - bearing in mind this is a spectator edition - it would be good if a mod could ensure all orders are readied once a player signs in particularly disbands and builds just to keep the spectators interested.
fiedler (1293 D)
03 Jun 11 UTC
Okay thanks for the lecture. In future I'll be sure not to express any opinions or ask politely for players to click ready if they can.
Btw, I'm going overseas on the 17th, so will probably need a sitter.
Probability I am one of the players = 1 :)

pro-italian disband from austria, will it be a mistake of will italy take the bait and hit turkey now.

turkey continues to push russia while german looks free to finish his invasion, though i only question the abandoning of baltic sea in favour of sweden. A full invasion of russia is much easier with a convoy through baltic (or through GoB is there is an army in sweden to convoy to liv....)

france continues predictably north with nothing from england to stop him, the german moves seem to indicate he is willing to work with france now and forgoe the russian invasion for the moment.

Italy's and germany's decisions are key here.

france and tureky are committed.
Maniac (189 D(B))
04 Jun 11 UTC
I think austria just wantd to get vie back at the expense of tri which is all ge could really do.

Turk should take rum with BS, IMHO?

Looks like france and germany have agreed that F takes eng while ger takes on russia

If so that is good gunboat play as people don't have to guess so many moves.
Maniac (189 D(B))

agree with orathic that Italy's decisions are now key

is that 'IMHO?' you questioning your own opinion here? :p
Kingdroid (219 D)

He is a maniac after all...

I think Russia's disband was a good choice, he wanted to make it clear to England that he was not a threat, although it isn't looking too good for him especially with Austria now working against him.
Maniac (189 D(B))
05 Jun 11 UTC
I always question my own opinions, if that makes me a maniac then guilty as charged.

Wll done Ialy, we will now see how brave turkey is? I anticipated alb-gre with Ion support and tri-ser; will turkey try ser-gre with aeg support to get a bounce? Will Italy realise this and slip Ion-Eastern med and play tri-serbia anyway? I'm guessing Italy has vacated vie to build a relationship with Austria who by the way made an excellent support of a german unit.

I think you missed the party where Italy also took Trieste. I think Italy was trying to bounce Tyrolia...

@kingdroid, italy attacked the old austria and now wishes to make amends with the new austria - that's how i read it anyway
JesusPetry (258 D)
05 Jun 11 UTC
France went on well with the plan, but England is doing good defense. Germany managed to keep his borders safe while he gets a piece of the dismantling Russia, of which even Austria seems to want a bit. Turkey keeps his steady northern progress while Italy seems to try to keep options open with both what's left of Austria and a strong Turkey as potential targets.

I think Austria is trying to signal that he just wants to survive. Should he go to Vienna in the fall?
Kingdroid (219 D)

Austria definitely needs to take Vie this turn.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

france has the two convoy routes to wales, i'd like to see brest to wales (via MAO, Irish sea and supported by EC) how ever no matter what England can cut support for the move to wales... will definitely be an interesting move.

It seems more people are voting for a cancel. If it goes through, we really should try this again with a password.
Kingdroid (219 D)

I don't see why they would vote Cancel...

Why did the new Austria help Germany instead of defending his own territory. Very disappointing.
Kingdroid (219 D)
06 Jun 11 UTC
He's trying to make friends. In addition, moving Galcia -> Vienna would not have done anything to save trieste, and he is right to assume that Vienna was not going to be moving.

Germany can't help him anyway, and he won't.
Maniac (189 D(B))

Agreed if this game is cancel we should try again with a password; how do players feel about getting a mod to force retreats/builds as soon as players log in to kep the game moving and some pace for the onlookers?
Maniac (189 D(B))
07 Jun 11 UTC
Interesting phase of the game now, 4 countries are looking good but it's hard to see how eng, austria and russia will survive much longer. The interesting thing now is what will Italy do? I think it could take Gre and Vie next year - it still has good NAPs in place with germany and france who have other theatres to occupy their minds. Will this concern turkey, and if so what can he do to stop a italian invasion?
Maniac (189 D(B))
07 Jun 11 UTC
Turkey will be the first to vote draw once Eng, Russia and Austria are deceased.
uclabb (589 D)
07 Jun 11 UTC
The question here, to me at least, is whether Russia will make a "screw you Turkey" disband of St. Petersburg. I probably would

12-hour high stakes WTA gunboat?
Greetings all. I've set up a 12-hour per phase WTA classic gunboat with a password and was hoping to entice some of the more experienced Diplomacy veterans to join up for a high quality game. The entry fee is 333 D. Shoot me a PM if you want in. If you meet my moderately rigorous requirements (you've got some skill and don't make a habit of resigning games) I will send you the password. Thanks.

This Time On Philosophy
In "The Odyssey" by Homer, Achilles, the elite hero of the Greeks, leads a large mass of unquestioning, robot-like followers, the Myrmidons, who are classically described as being "ant-people" in their nature. If we were asked which we'd rather be, a hero or a drone, most of us would choose the former, "drone" doesn't sound appealing...and yet, politically, we prefer the rule of masses over the few...so, which is preferable? Why? Elitists, Pluralists, ho! :)
