@jesus - what is the point of putting password in a thread where everyone can see it?
JesusPetry (258 D)
31 May 11 UTC
The point is that only people who read the forum will join!
orathaic (1009 D(B))

surely only people who ask to be pm'd would get the password, and they'd read the forum to figure that much out, n'est pas?
JesusPetry (258 D)

I'm talking about any password mode as opposed to no password, as I suspect someone has joined the game without knowing what it was about.

But let's not speculate anymore about that! :-)

Autumn predictions from an amused spectator.......

England: Will try and keep France/Germany/Russia! at arms length, and appreciates every passing hour that remains.

France: Will attempt to get position on England.

Germany: Supports Baltic to Sweden, plots next cunning surprise.

Italy: Sneak attack on France? Or moves to grab a piece of Austrian decline.

Austria: NMRs

Russia: Supports Sweden to Norway, supports arm to sev. Loses Rum, and all hopes of austrian plunder.

Turkey: Captures rum. Rubs hands in anticipation of future success.

anyone think this needs a pause, force austria out and find a replacement?

anyone want to take over from austria? i only ask out of a desire to 'keep the server fun'

@fiedler: Why would Russia support Arm to Sev?
chamois (136 D)

I guess anyway nobody would accept to remplace Austria
orathaic (1009 D(B))
01 Jun 11 UTC
i think i have two offers to replace, and one abstain regarding the decision. i still need 5 players to vote for a replacement... and NOT veto what i think it the right call. (you have the right to make the decision in my mind... if this continues it will be a CD next year and i'll have nothing to do with that...)
fiedler (1293 D)
01 Jun 11 UTC
@Jesus: You are right, probly best for Arm to stay put and maybe buy some time.
Not a lot of good options there!
JesusPetry (258 D)

I think Russia won't lose Rumania. Sweden, OTOH, seems lost.
England will want to at least bounce France out of EC.
Germany will take Sweden and move towards Warsaw.
France can do whatever he wishes, he's in a great position.
Italy will have to content with a piece of the CD Austria.
Turkey will keep his Spring gain and try to improve his position: Con convoyed into Arm with Ank support looks pretty interesting, while Bul and Ser can safely bounce in Greece.
Maniac (189 D(B))
02 Jun 11 UTC
You seem to have read the script pretty well Jesus.

Italy is now in a great position thanks in part to austria's CD. He should get another build next year and he has france at his back attacking england. Italy's decision now is does he side with Turkey to take down russia, or help russia and attack turkey? Now that Italy has a foothold in the game he should be attracting the attention of germany?
uclabb (589 D)
02 Jun 11 UTC
Weak move by Turkey. Russia's moves were so obvious they were almost forced. Armenia should have been displaced.
JesusPetry (258 D)
02 Jun 11 UTC
Only Turkey didn't do as I expected, maybe an oversight on his part, or maybe he didn't want Russia to automatically disband in Armenia. France chose to go north. England, at the same time he was defending EC, tried to signal friendship to France by moving out of Wales, or so it seems. Germany was cautious, but went on with his new plan. Russia is in trouble, with two fronts to defend; his only hope seems to be Italy attacking Turkey. Turkey and Italy have a build each, what kind of build they choose can be very telling.
Maniac (189 D(B))
02 Jun 11 UTC
@jesus - yes builds will be very telling; cue predict-a-build.

Not sure why all the players aren't voting to cancel, given Austria's CD.
Maniac (189 D(B))
02 Jun 11 UTC
People don't always vote cancel, although it would be better if they did.
JesusPetry (258 D)
02 Jun 11 UTC
On second thought, Turkey's decision to not force a disband in Armenia was brilliant! It makes much more sense to force the disband in the Spring, when Russia can't replace it for the next season, and that can be done now!
chamois (136 D)
02 Jun 11 UTC
Now that Austria left, Italy is going to be stronger, that means more trouble for France I guess. He may build a fleet in Marseille in order to prevent an Italian fleet in Naple that could turn west.
Maniac (189 D(B))
02 Jun 11 UTC
@chamois - nah France seems to be the kind of player that nails his colours to the mast - he will go one way at a time.
Maniac (189 D(B))

Question for the peanut gallery, Besides Austria, who is losing? it seems very even among the remaining 6 players, (cept Russia, who is a smidge behind)
uclabb (589 D)
02 Jun 11 UTC
@Jesus
I don't know how you can say not disbanding Armenia was brilliant. If Armenia were disbanded, Rumania would be guaranteed, and if Germany bothers Moscow, Sevastopol could fall as well. Now Turkey will be lucky to get anything before they have to start dealing with Italy.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

austria is a new player.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
03 Jun 11 UTC
ONE VOTE TO CANCEL. contact me if you wish to discuss the matter.

I can with restart (with the new austria... by setting up a new anon gunboat- and sending out pms to the current players and then setting everyone to the same countries...)

only of course if everyone votes to cancel.
JesusPetry (258 D)
03 Jun 11 UTC
@uclabb: you're partially right. Russia may now save Armenia from disbanding in the Spring. But that will probably cost him Warsaw, or maybe Rumania itself.

12-hour high stakes WTA gunboat?
Greetings all. I've set up a 12-hour per phase WTA classic gunboat with a password and was hoping to entice some of the more experienced Diplomacy veterans to join up for a high quality game. The entry fee is 333 D. Shoot me a PM if you want in. If you meet my moderately rigorous requirements (you've got some skill and don't make a habit of resigning games) I will send you the password. Thanks.

This Time On Philosophy
In "The Odyssey" by Homer, Achilles, the elite hero of the Greeks, leads a large mass of unquestioning, robot-like followers, the Myrmidons, who are classically described as being "ant-people" in their nature. If we were asked which we'd rather be, a hero or a drone, most of us would choose the former, "drone" doesn't sound appealing...and yet, politically, we prefer the rule of masses over the few...so, which is preferable? Why? Elitists, Pluralists, ho! :)
