Question for Euro-Zone people
How does the whole soveriegn debt fiasco look from your point of view?

I know that people from Europe sometimes find it baffling how the safety net is much weaker in the US than in their home nations, but I think we here find the level of tax evasion, bribery, and corruption in the southern tier nations equally baffling....

No Joke, this is a quote from a facebook arguement I am in
I will support Zack's decision to enter into the dangerously racist field of biology, despite the fact that reason and logic certainly have no place in the future socialist empire of equality and freedom which we will fight for and inherit, despite our low-birthrate and poor schooling. We will survive!

"what does polite have to do with anything?"

WHY would I have to explain my sarcasm to such a gifted individual?

Mafialligator got it, so it's not as if it missed the mark...aren't you so gifted, Fasces?

Well...why don't you get it?

@numbz: I like both.

@Obi and Mafia: I find it amusing how nobody (minus people at my school) believe that I am a gifted student who skipped a grade.

I find it amusing that you still think I give a shit, Fasces...

Take it from someone who knows:

Being "gifted" or "talented" or "special" in high school is all well and good...

When you succeed in the real world, you can really use those words.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

@Lord:

WEll--what do you want to debate about?

If you have a good topic, I'm all ears (and maybe just a bit mouth.) ;)
Mafialligator (239 D)

"I find it amusing how nobody (minus people at my school) believe that I am a gifted student who skipped a grade." - I find it amusing how you think that means something.

You might be smart, good for you, it doesn't mean that you don't believe stupid things. Smart people often do, because they're very good at rationalizing beliefs they arrived at for non smart reasons, if I may paraphrase Michael Shermer.

I was in the gifted class when I was in high school also. It gave me this idea that I knew fucking everything. But seriously, I was wrong. You have no idea how much there is that you don't know. And that is something that being in a "gifted class" will never teach you.
Fasces349 (0 DX)

When did I say that?

(that was directed at both Obi and Mafia)

I didn't realize you were making a non sequitur. I assumed you had a point in bringing that up.

Actually I should say, I didn't realize you were intentionally making a non sequitur.

+100 Mafi...

The wisest man to ever walk barefoot across Athens once said:

:"All I know is that I know nothing."

Didn't strut about claiming to skip grades and be gifted, that Socrates...

Wow--what an idiot he was, compared to America's Pampered, er, Gifted Students...

"@Obi and Mafia: I find it amusing how nobody (minus people at my school) believe that I am a gifted student who skipped a grade. "

I find it amusing that some people who post unbelievably moronic bullshit to the forum are then surprised when others fail to recognize their (nonexistent) genius.
People who boast about their IQs are losers. It's a dead giveaway.

Fasces I realize you are taking the piss most of the time, but King Atom if you read this I am talking to you. If you want people to think you are intelligent then don't boast about your IQ or your great school or how you skipped a class. It just makes you sound like a dweeb.
You might even be reasonably bright - but you just haven't lived and you don't know anything yet.

KA, maybe you have aspergers syndrome? If so I am sorry if I sound harsh. I realize life can be tough, especially if you are being picked on in school. But if you think that some how this forum is place where you can get the respect, online, that you clearly lack in your normal life, you need to try to be less of a dick.

I'm pretty sure you're just averagely above-average. Like most people who are above-average, you're just average. Just like all the other people who aren't average.
Cachimbo (1181 D)

I failed a number of classes in High School. I've also never graduated from what would be the equivalent of the last two years of high school in the American system (it's a collegial system in Québec, where you finish high school in grade 11 and go through 2 years of what's called CEGEP before going to University).

IQs, gifted students classes, skipping grades... what the hell does it tell you about yourself and your capacities? In my humble opinion, it says nothing more than that you can perform well in a certain given system.

Now, if someone can prove to me that all the capacities and wisdom you need in life are to be derived from that one system, then you may be thought to have a point.

NB: Even if you were to succeed at proving so much, you'll still have to do away with the fact that I obviously had terrible issues with the system yet have a fairly successful life. How do you explain the "exception" (assuming, for the sakes of the argument, that I'm the only one)?

Also: I have red hair. I've also said other things on this site that clearly disqualify me as an Aryan. So I must be a sub-human of sorts, right?
SacredDigits (102 D)

I went to a gifted high school, and now, 20 years after graduation, only about 10 percent of my classmates have an advanced degree (post-bachelor). About 10 percent died, one of them was shot to death by his father (no, it wasn't Marvin Gaye). And of the remaining 80%, quite a few of them are slackers or hold low income/prestige jobs. That seems about in tune with the average public school class to me.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
16 Sep 11 UTC
@SacredDigits, are those slackers and 'low prestige' people capable of seeing that they are happy without going to the extra effort needed to earn more money, or are they just used to being lazy because they were in a gifted class?

someone mentioned religion and intelligence, well that reminded me of this chart:
http://akcdn.okccdn.com/blog/first_date_questions/MegaChart2.png

it is based on profiles on okcupid, and the level of writing skills attributed to those individuals.

SacredDigits (102 D)

@orathaic: I would say that those who had the feeling that they could just say, "I'm smart" and drift through life generally had that viewpoint crash down upon them in epic fashion. That's probably about half of that group. But, to be fair, there's people of non-gifted groups who have similar viewpoints, like "I'm good at football, I can drift through life."

But then there's those of us who value happiness over income, so, there's that too.

More wisdom from spyman... the would-be-wise would do well to listen, and not just because he's talking to KA....

Most of us are pretty sharp here, nobody gives a damn what your IQ is, and as I believe I've mentioned before, most everybody eventually hits a point in their life where they are just average among their peers.

I was a smart kid in high school too... it took me until I was ~25 to learn that that is only one small part of who I am.

"I have red hair. I've also said other things on this site that clearly disqualify me as an Aryan. So I must be a sub-human of sorts, right?"
I am not a believer of Aryan superiority, I thought I made that clear.

"Most of us are pretty sharp here"
I wouldn't be surpised if more then a 3rd of us were gifted...

LordoftehNubz (100 D)

I wouldn't be surprised to find out 2/3rds of the people here are gifted. The bar's pretty low: have you ever heard an 'average' 14-15 year old trying to read (Shakespeare, Twain, magazine) out loud to a class? It's depressingly bad in most instances. The "gifted" ones are the ones who don't make you tear your ears off to make it stop.

And I get yelled at for that? I didn't even fucking post it and you're using it to bitch about me yet again. Fasces, if you're trying to cling to that...get in line! Spyman, throwing diseases and syndromes won't make anything any different. If you are happy thinking you put me in my place, why don't you try getting happy anywhere else. I don't give a fuck about any of you.

I don't think anybody doubts it (well, some might), we just don't give a damn. Until you do something with your "gift," (if that's what you call it) all you are is potential. But listening to a lot of your posts, I don't see anything special. Just a normal kid, smarter than some, whinier than most, and possessive of a terrible superiority complex.

New Game/Leaving
As my semester increases in difficulty I am faced with a question. Should I take a break from dip? My answer is yes, but after one more game. Hoping to get some of my classic opponents, but there is nothing wrong with new people :)
I'm thinking WTA, anon, somewhere around 100 D for entry, 24 to 48 hour phases. Any Interest?

Statistics
Does anyone know a website that has relatively recent Diplomacy statistics for things like victories, defeats, draws, opening moves, etc? I've recently re-read The Game of Diplomacy and am curious to see if any of the statistics that Sharp quoted have dramatically changed, but a cursory google search failed to find anything productive. Is there a database for statistics from this website? The 25,000+ games is a huge potential data set.
