Question for Euro-Zone people
How does the whole soveriegn debt fiasco look from your point of view?

I know that people from Europe sometimes find it baffling how the safety net is much weaker in the US than in their home nations, but I think we here find the level of tax evasion, bribery, and corruption in the southern tier nations equally baffling....

No Joke, this is a quote from a facebook arguement I am in
I will support Zack's decision to enter into the dangerously racist field of biology, despite the fact that reason and logic certainly have no place in the future socialist empire of equality and freedom which we will fight for and inherit, despite our low-birthrate and poor schooling. We will survive!

New Game/Leaving
As my semester increases in difficulty I am faced with a question. Should I take a break from dip? My answer is yes, but after one more game. Hoping to get some of my classic opponents, but there is nothing wrong with new people :)
I'm thinking WTA, anon, somewhere around 100 D for entry, 24 to 48 hour phases. Any Interest?

Besides me there is another Greek player that just joined the site so I'm willing to go for a Southeastern European game (remember the team that won the silver medal in the world cup?).

Statistics
Does anyone know a website that has relatively recent Diplomacy statistics for things like victories, defeats, draws, opening moves, etc? I've recently re-read The Game of Diplomacy and am curious to see if any of the statistics that Sharp quoted have dramatically changed, but a cursory google search failed to find anything productive. Is there a database for statistics from this website? The 25,000+ games is a huge potential data set.

Someone ran some statistics based on games here. The games database isn't quite that big, because there are variants and all sorts of stuff.

If you limit to WTA games, that drops it a lot. Then, when you take out all Gunboat and Public Press games...quite a few more. Take out the Ancient Med and World Map (not quite as big a deal if I remember). Take out all games that ended before year 4. All games with CD's?

They ran it, and it showed some interesting stuff. I will try to find the post.

I suspect that within communities the stats probably change over time. In those diplomacy podcasts the commentators talked about how in competion that Russia used to be the best, but now everyone tries to stop Russia early on and thus Russia's win stats were not as good as they used to be.

I think Italy is usually the most disadvantaged, statistically. Regardless, Italy has it's advantages. A strong late game Italy is my favorite power.

Ages ago someone complied some stats on this site and if I recall correctly Turkey had the best stats. Recently a forum member (Tru Ninja?) said he had complied some stats but I haven't seen his report. It would interesting to see.

As awkward as it is to answer my own question (at least partially), I found this link (courtesy of a Stephen Ager) that summarizes Richard Sharp's analysis of opening moves in The Numbers Game series: http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/resources/postal/openings.htm

It can offer a relatively modern breakdown of openings, at least from the UK.

I have a small statistics report based on each country and including various miscellaneous statistics. If anyone's interested, you can email me at [email protected]

If you want specifically statistics, there are some that have done them. If you are looking at openings and strategies, I'd suggest diplom.org... for openings, specifically, http://www.diplom.org/Online/Openings/ (it is my fav site for openings)
fortknox - I may love you for informing me about that site

I've read most of the Richard Sharp book and enjoyed it. That online openings site is pretty sweet, thanks for passing it along.

Can we port the Vdip stats page here?
+1 Gobble

that would be amaaaaaaazing

i have to assume that the vdip stats page would be a huge drain on sever resoures.
(though if only updated once per day/month - with the results cached, it would be pretty easy to maintain.

that said, ask Kestas. He knows better.
