Gunning for the Gunboat-3 Discussion
I don't think Turkey understands that this is a WTA game.
He gets nothing for letting Russia wins.
And I played poorly as Italy. I tried to stop the Jugger but France kept attacking me and not sending a fleet to safeguard the Ionian.

Why No in-game messaging?
Isn't the main purpose of "Diplomacy" communications? Why are there lots of games that specify No in-game messaging? Just curious. Unless the game is anonymous, I would be worried about lots of private communications.

Beginners guide to Gunboats?
So, I'm pretty intrigued by the idea of gunboats but I feel that there are a lot of nuances that are a little tough to pick up on the fly.
Anybody wanna give me a quick few points so I don't seem like an idiot on my first game?

back on the topic of beginner tips, i love this site:

http://www.alb-gsb.com/diplomacy/stats/gunboatopens.htm

it's a table that gives you an idea of the likelihood of various opening moves.

So, if this is going to be somewhat like SoW I will begin the question barrage. What is the purpose/reason to save your orders in a gunboat? Is it only because you're away for awhile or because (in this case) you need to talk to your advisor or do some players use it to look over moves later? Or, does it sometimes signal something sinister?
Stukus (2126 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
Usually a saved order means that they put in something okay, but might want to look at it later. That's what it means for me anyway.
I'm not sure a Q+A in the forums is really appropriate for a gunboat. But I could be wrong - what is the consensus here?
omgwhathappened (0 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
i will sometimes not ready my orders if i still feel like considering. you are letting folks know you are there, but that you are thinking. the phase has a time limit for a reason, and players are perfectly within their rights to use the whole phase length, every single phase.

Now, is it abusive to knowingly not check in to a gunboat until 10 seconds before the phase ends to set some moves? like, you enter the moves at some point, don't save them, leave the tab open and then hit 'save' 10 seconds before the phase ends, so other people think you are going to NMR but you aren't.
gramilaj (100 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
It can be abused, but I think it's more dangerous than it's worth in a gunboat game because you'll invite attacks if people think you're going to NMR.

Play passworded or non anonymous ones I'd say

Seeing how there is no diplomacy and fancy openings can therefore be fatal, would you say that most gunboats are generally alike? (In terms of moves, alliances)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
@mon- No, but they are simpler in general.
uclabb (589 D)

I would say that first moves are much more important in gunboat. In press games, the first few turns are often a time for jockeying for position, but in gunboat, as far as I can tell, you want to communicate alliances as soon as possible and make the people around you seem vulnerable.

For example, a fairly common move in gunboat seems to be Germany opening pretty strongly against Russia in order to try to make sure England moves in that direction as well (and potentially to take Turkey's attention away from Austria).
I think there are two styles of play in the opening game. People will either make a strong move in one direction or play very conservatively. For me, I would rarely open aggressively after one player but rather play the conservative approach. Usually from the first move or two you will see somebody move on you. I will then make that person my target.

I think this is more likely to get a third party on your side since you will be defending near your home while the aggressor will be out of position making the attack and therefore be the vulnerable party.

Also, by committing in one direction you kill the opportunity for a potential ally.

For me, I will never open to Arm as Turkey, to English Channel as either France or England, to Burgundy or Silesia as Germany, Tyrolia as Italy, etc.

THe only exception is Austria to Gal, I will often do. And occasionally Mun-Tyr.
