I've said nothing of the sort, Yoyo.

The only thing I've said that you're reacting against is that called my Dad's new wife an imbecile -- a personal injection into the discussion that was unnecessary -- but the reason I called her an imbecile was not because of her choice of names, etc, and I've already said that. It was meant more as a flippant joke, but that British style of sarcasm doesn't often come over well to Americans. That said, you're taking one little personal comment and conflating it with an agenda on women, that's just weird and bad debate.
wjessop (100 DX)
09 Dec 15 UTC
It seems you haven't really read what I've said and are just reacting against things that you've exaggerated from what I said.

No one's "insulting women". I think we're on the same page :)

I for one try to make sure that girls who care about how a guy looks turn the other way the moment they see me.

I *really* don't want to converse with girls all the time, only to find out they are only talking to me because of how I look. Instant dealbreaker and scaring them away before talking to them saves a lot of time.

You have to weed them out somehow, right?

For the record -- my Dad's new wife said that Donald Trump was right to say Muslims should be barred from entry and that she wished he was running in the UK. This, and for many many other things, is why I think she is horrible and an imbecile.

As I said, if it was just because of the naming thing and she was otherwise completetely reasonable, I would of course not call her an imbecile. I generally don't go around insulting anyone -- that is completely not me, if you knew me :)
This woman is genuinely the most racist, thoughtless woman I've ever met.

But she's 15 years younger than my Dad and has a very nice body. !

Well, that's hardly fair. I wish Trump was running in the UK, too. We have a lot in common, it seems.

I'm not a lady magnet, but I'm not exactly a love-on-first-sight-guy, so even a single lady could waste a shitload of my time getting to know her the slow way.

@abge: That's actually why I take care not to wear remotely expensive clothing.
I'm sure you know I blew all the money from all my successful startups on that laptop anyway, though :-)
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I tend not to bother with titles. They seem to serve little purpose these days except to annoy people. Just use the name preceded by "Hi", "Hello" or "Dear" depending on how formal you want the email / letter to look.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

I can say with near certainty that I'll be calling her by her first name once I'm studying there, but this is different. I expect that email to be read by an entire admission board, for starters.

Lol I'm just messing with you wjessop. I'm pretty sure we have similar views on the issue.

The way I see it, it's like sitting at the back of the bus for black people. Nowadays, people know that they can sit wherever the hell they want. Sitting in the back isn't completely banned, because that defeats the purpose of allowing them to sit in the front.

I think we're both saying that no black people show ever feel *compelled* or forced to sit in the back.

I think this a very concrete analogy for a very complicated situation where it's hard to tell whether or not women wear make up for themselves or for society. To some degree we are in agreement, but I'm sure we don't draw the line in the sand in exactly the same place.

I was always a little confused by the bus thing. As every schoolboy knows, the back seat of the bus is the most desirable of all seats, with the sole exception of the front seats upstairs in a double decker.

Of course discrimination on buses is vital to civilised society? Where would we be if the front seats were not reserved for the elderly, disabled, or parents with children? Where would we be if society didn't demand that the fit surrender their seats to the feeble, pregnant women, and the sort of fat woman who looks like she may be pregnant but may not be and you'll be damned before you ask? Where would we be? France!
