On The Forum
As some of you may know, I have been a strong proponent of a one forum system. After some careful reflection, though, I've decided separate forums are better. I have a proposal that would allow for the separation of topics without the segregation of the community that many fear. I realize this is a sensitive topic, so I would appreciate serious criticism only. I have taken the liberty of making a mock-up of my proposed forum here: http://i.imgur.com/rgcdsO2.png

this is why lusthog rules are not for full press
ssorenn. Lets say France does net those two centers. And then lets say Germany is convinced not to throw the game. Now France has control over the entire southern line and can either 1) reinforce his northern line and continue taking out Germany. 2) Exploit the weakness in Albania/Trieste and unravel your entire position.

You won't win this argument. Lusthog can be adopted for full press, but you must listen to mod/TD (I emphasize here TD) decisions when they are overseeing it.

OK too much drama in this - cancel my inclusion - I generate my own drama thank you.

The idea that I would have to necessarily go with Russia or France is nonsense. At the point of the draw, I was with both! Anyway, I'm out of here - I have sufficient RL problems in RL with my health to make this a waste of what's left of my life. I'm off the list, and I believe ssoren is too, which effectively cedes the mountain to ckroberts...

I am back from traveling, and I don't know where the heck we are in this. Are we reconsidering playing Lusthog for this series? Are the three Mountain survivors all getting kicked off?
Until we get a bit more clarification on the Lusthog rules and more clear guidelines on how to end games in the future, I wouldn't say anyone should be kicked off.
ssorenn (0 DX)
12 Jun 15 UTC
im out with the current way this is run....there is way too much ambiguity to the end game....two powers side against one, but then you cant end a game because a theoretical stab could happen
ckroberts (3548 D)
14 Jun 15 UTC
So, nobody likes the Lusthog. I guess let's remove that.

Is there a semi-Lusthog? Or a way to make sure it's not a three-way draw every time, besides prestige? It's been a three-way draw twice anyway.
ssorenn (0 DX)
14 Jun 15 UTC
I'm in without those exact rules. Also both three ways were both, close to solos
dyager_nh (619 D)
14 Jun 15 UTC
Gunboat with hidden draw votes would concievably create more Solos.
Press allows people to team up to stop a solo 90% of the time. It also allows people to negotiate an endgame scenerio too easily.

But I know most of the people who played this series are press players.

I'm out for gunboat. As it's an abomination
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

I think centre-based scoring when games draw is a good way of encouraging solos- since you solo by getting to 18, not by killing off other players. It's easier to solo when there are 5 players (and associated grudges) remaining than when there are only two.

However, if you do centre based scoring, then I think some players will still play for smaller draws, since that's what the site scoring (and therefore GR) rewards. We've had trouble with the mismatch between site scoring and special rules scoring in other special rules games.

I don't think it's fair to say nobody likes lusthog- I personally like it, and am in two lusthog games right now. But it's a much more brutal variant- to stay alive you have to make absolutely sure that you're necessary for the stalemate line, on both sides. It's possible that this feature encourages more conservative play generally- although I don't have enough experience with it to make this claim.
thorfi (1023 D)
14 Jun 15 UTC
Clearly people do like Lusthog, or it wouldn't be being played. :-) As far as encouraging solos though, I'm not sure anything truly does. Maybe for *this* variant, board top remains in, everybody else gets kicked out?

That would be in keeping with king of the mountain, winner take all, whether that's a draw or a full solo.

+1 ssorenn. King of the Mountain gunboat would be utterly retarded. The idea that people should be conspiring to knock the king off the mountain top should be PART of the game!!

The problem as I see it is that the game's premise is "Top 3 move on", and if that is the case there should be some incentive to, perhaps, work with others to be top three, as opposed to randomly just happening to one of the top three. If there is no incentive to play the game differently as a series, then it's just an annoying series that punishes me with two turns on the bench if I lose. It won't last too long that way (just my prediction).

The guy winning the game, for example - he has no reason to play the game any differently than he has ever played any other game. So the only unique aspect is that, when the game is over, you can brag in a forum thread? And these bragging rights give you no advantage/disadvantage in the next game.

In the *real* game of King of the Mountain, a person on top of the mountain has a distinct advantage - he is on top, and others have to work hard - even cooperate - to bring him down. This concept is not really captured in this series as I see it.

^ Might need some rules to allow a TD to force a draw if players won't, though. Probably no less controversial if it happens.
thorfi (1023 D)

Krellin: Interesting point - maybe King Gets to play S1901 alone, all other players must order all holds?
thorfi (1023 D)
14 Jun 15 UTC
Mind you, players certainly can and do signal cooperation in gunboat. Would have to be gunboat non-anonymous though, which is weird, IMO.
ssorenn (0 DX)
15 Jun 15 UTC
Maybe SC total is the best way to say who's king or not. Then the only way there could be two to move on is a 2 way draw. I like that.
ssorenn (0 DX)
15 Jun 15 UTC
This actually encourages solo more and also not whittling down of possible draw. Game still has GR value, is in a 3 way draw, the two lower sc people know they're out, but accept it for normal GR sakes
ssorenn (0 DX)
15 Jun 15 UTC
@CK. it's not a matter of liking list hog rules, they just don't apply well to press games. IMHO
ckroberts (3548 D)
15 Jun 15 UTC
Right, I wasn't clear. People don't like Lusthog for this. For gunboat I think it is good.

Maybe it's best to just have one King of the Mountain, by SC count at a draw or the winner?
