Any Poli Sci geeks around?
Hi, it's been a while. The political science department at my school can be dead sometimes and I've been looking to bounce some ideas around. I don't know why, but I remembered this site and thought there might be a few of you around with some interest for discussion. I know that for the most part, the discussion on this site is news/opinion based, but I don't know what kind of theory backgrounds some of you might have...

They are "for" you in that they are available for your use should people vote not to lynch.
Ah, and there's ghug making baseless accusations again. As for the lynch v. no lynch business, I only did that last time because there were a lot of new players, and I figured that since new townies tend to go no lynch, it would be a viable way to build a field of non suspects, but at this point that isn't really viable.

When it comes to lynching it probably is our best move, sure it can backfire in our faces but most of the time it gives us valuable information to work with, and in a game with 6 mafia, information is what we need. Though obviously we need to have a lot of discussion before we feel confident lynching anyone. Also, ghug's focusing a lot on scum-hunting again and less on actual discussion, just like that time. Doesn't mean he's mafia, but he definitely should be looked at when we have a larger catalog of posts.

Rightyo, I'm back I'll explain my split vote theory before I'm accused or anything like that, as a genuine early game option, and I'll let you all decide what you make off it.

Most games in phase one tend to come down to 2 players X vs Y. Both having a large number of votes Usually around 80% of the votes dictated with them, with a few lurky avoiding the limelight votes here and there. The logic behind this is if a bandwagon is started against a mafia early on by chance (As let's be honest it takes a pretty bad slip up to become suspicious day 1) the mafia will have to band together to try to save that person. Which in the longer term could be very suspicious when analysing voting patterns.
The down side of this is that it's very unlikely to actually hit a mafia. In this game, we're looking at around a 10% chance that at least 1 of the 2 will be Mafia.

My Idea of a split vote is that we vote for maybe 5-6 people early on. This doesn't have to be anyone in particular as Town shouldn't have any fear of getting Lynched, as they're not "Too" important in the grand scheme of things. As long as them getting lynched gives information, that's as much as they can hope for in the early game, as guessing correctly early on is nearly impossible. Maybe I'm just overly pessimistic, but that's just my honest view on the early game.

With having maybe 5-6 early game lynch targets, there is a much larger likelihood that we'll hit at least one Mafia. And the Mafia will find it a lot easier to swing the vote. should one of them be targeted. But that's what we want. We want suspicious switching.
A death for the greater good so to speak.

Getting more people targeted early on will also bring more people into talking, and possibly bring up more slip ups and information, the biggest problem in this game is successful Mafia Lurks who just manage to stay of everybody's radar. The more people that are accused early on, the more talking their is. Which is why I think a split vote is something that should be considered.

Tl:DR

2 Way vote gives limited info, and has low strike rate
Split vote causes lots of conversation, and can show suspicious switching, as has a larger likelihood of a mafia having lynch votes on him.

##vote uclabb
Ima keep this up so he actually participates in the conversation. As for minty's 'spread the vote idea' if I remember correctly it's a tactic that keeps the Mafia from just piling onto a vote train, and we learn more about each player. The only weakness is that the Mafia can swing a vote to kill a town, HOWEVER we can look at who swings with who, and figure out who to kill that way

woah, my maths is really off with that 10% number for 2 people, I completely didn't take into account how many mafia there are this game.

ghug (5068 D(B))

@Minty, I feel like it just makes it easier for the mafia to shift the vote without giving themselves away. I think votes tend to naturally start off with several small bandwagons and naturally coalesce to two by the end of the day. We should just let that happen. You answered my concerns for the moment thought, so ##VOTE thdfrance. I don't remember why so I'll go find my reason in a second. In the mean time, Vash is my number two right now because of nonsense attempts to suppress my discussion. Uclabb's third I guess, but thd's the only one I legit suspect.

Minty, you're split vote idea gives a better chance of hitting scum, but won't it potentially put power roles at more of a risk than with only 2 or 3 major candidates?
ghug (5068 D(B))
15 Jan 15 UTC
Oh yeah, thd tried to suppress the no lynch discussion, which leaves us talking about nothing, and now he's keeping a list of no-lynchers in an attempt to establish a state of fear amongst honest citizens of the website so that nobody will talk.

@ghug: I'm not trying to stifle discussion, I want to talk about what strategy we should use to figure out who we are going to lynch rather than waste time talking about whether or not we should.

ghug (5068 D(B))
15 Jan 15 UTC
Let's lynch the person who seems most likely to be mafia. There. Any system will lead to that conclusion anyway unless it's terrible, and I'm yet to see one that gives more info than organic voting.
ghug (5068 D(B))
15 Jan 15 UTC
I changed my vote from minty to you. That's how it works.
thdfrance (187 D)
15 Jan 15 UTC
I think we need to maximize the amount of information we get out of the first lynch. In all honesty, the best way to get people talking is to spread out a vote. That puts more people on the spot, and forces discussion. That gives us the information we need to make and informed decision on day two. If we let bandwagons form, we only have information about the few people who are leading those charges, and the others can just hide in mutual agreement.
tvrocks (388 D)

@flum: i think ghug also volunteered.
