German Opening Strategies: Update for Online Play

PREFACE: I am really a rather rotten player. I write this not because I enjoy any good measure of skill at the game of Diplomacy, but rather because I enjoy writing.

Drinking Age
What is the drinking age in your society?
This is the most illogical part of America. An 18-year old has the competence to vote for President but not to drink a beer.

quick question
Hi, I used to play many many years ago and now I am back to webdiplomacy. Just a quick question, how many phases do you need to miss for the game to kick you out?

Apologies if this question had been asked before but I couldnt find it in FAQs.

Apropos of Cach's point about the difference between thought police and restrictions on speech, freedom of speech does not constitute equality of platform access. The owners of the server are fully entitled to make judgments and policies regarding what speech may and may not be used thereon. I would urge them to do so.
hecks (164 D)

I'd volunteer to be a mod and police the forum, but I suspect I'd be too draconian in my judgments.

well I think YellowJackets comments about "Princess K"
were offensive, but rather than engage the foolish YJ
I chose to ignore his nonsense rather than pander to his childish attention seeking behaviour
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
09 Aug 13 UTC
I am also a supporter of the British Monarchy,
it's possible that some rabid anti monarchist(s) might find his comments amusing
I don't want to impose my subjective standards and deny YJ his right to free speech
but I have marked YJ down, in my opinion, as a Cork Brained Pantomine Clown

anyway, good thread hecks, you've started a vigorous discussion

"I chose to ignore his nonsense rather than pander to his childish attention seeking behaviour "

As I pointed out. MM - you have no problem seeking me out for verbal abuse....but your Libtard ally...gets the silent treatment. Thank you for openly stating your brand of hypocrisy, as I have pointed out with others.

Which **IS** relevant to this discussion...

You all want to moderate speech. Who's speech? What words?

I see lot's of silly posts...not one clear thought on the *actual* issue and how to *specifically* address it. Mental masturbation for the indignant souls...lol
krellin (80 DX)

So –serious question – how will people who have not demonstrated intellectual consistency in the threads so far be able to devise and implement a consistent scheme to punish those you disagree with. Sometime there is outcry at bad behavior…sometimes equal behavior is ignored by the same people…and now you want to set a policy? Very strange indeed.
“I hate your insults…you do it all the time and need to be silenced – you’re stupid and ugly!! So don’t you complain about anything, krellin” you will say….and then when THucy insults people, you laugh and agree with him, because he’s so clever, right? And NOW you want to set a policy?
Who’s community standards are you going to use? There is no community here, and there are no standards…this is a random collection of international human beings from *all* walks of life…there is not a shred of common standards among us, as common means “Of or relating to the community as a whole” common does not mean “most believe” it is an all-emcompassing thing. So…which minority opinion are you going to say is not relevant?
hecks (164 D)
09 Aug 13 UTC
Well, Krellin, if you want my personal ideas on whose speech and what words, here are some of my own preferences:
Whose discretion - solely that of moderators or others designated by Kestas, subject to the personal review of Kestas.
What words:
1. Personal threats to do harm.
2. Libel
3. Racial or religious epithets - all of them, coming from anybody. Off limits.
4. Personal insults
hecks (164 D)
09 Aug 13 UTC
"So –serious question – how will people who have not demonstrated intellectual consistency in the threads so far be able to devise and implement a consistent scheme to punish those you disagree with."

I don't suggest that the community design or enforce the standards. I suggest that Kestas and/or his selected designates do so. Webdip is not a democracy. It is an oligarchy.
krellin (80 DX)
09 Aug 13 UTC
1. I agree with that - that is a direct pre-cursor to real world action.
2. Libel? Bahh...prove I committed Libel. We are all anonymous and have no reputation to harm.
3. Please list which are epithets and which are personal greetings in a select community? Or which are epithets and which are song lyrics? What if we happen to have a large number of new members, youth of a particular culture in which your epithets is common usage among friends? I'm curious to see this list of yours...
4. Insults -- One man's insult is another man's *clearly defined label* which is an accurate depiction of another's behavior.

krellin (80 DX)
09 Aug 13 UTC
" I suggest that Kestas and/or his selected designates do so. Webdip is not a democracy. It is an oligarchy. "

Then why are you discussing it like your opinion matters? And telling me to stay on topic like your opinions matters (well, some have, anyway?) As I said, this conversation is mental masturbation.

But…I’ll leave it for now…I’m spoiling you fun. :) Sorry...

"Cork Brained Pantomine Clown"
You want to understand class, this is how upper class people insult others, by combining random inoffensive words together to form a slightly more offensive phrase; hat's breeding for you. If you want to pretend to be posh try this, your social standing will rise as if by magic and you will be compared to people such as Stephen Fry and Hugh Grant.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

So nigee, under your understanding of what constitutes insults in certani parts of the world, my description of a particularly delightful circus performance I saw incorporating a funny puppet might in fact get me silenced? Am I reading you correctly?
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

You probably wouldn't get silenced you Moderators Pet, but others might
hecks (164 D)
09 Aug 13 UTC
@Krellin,
Are you suggesting you know a puppet that plays webdip with whom you might interact on the forum? As in, "Dear Webdippers, allow me to introduce my good friend Charlie, the literal cork-brained pantomime clown. I met him backstage after his performance in Punch and Judy at the Opheum in July of 1992. It was a triumph. I laughed. I cried. I laughed some more. I fell asleep. Then I woke up and had some popcorn. Then I cried. Then I applauded."

If so, I'll allow it.

You can be 'charmingly offensive' or 'coquettish' with your put-downs.
krellin (80 DX)
09 Aug 13 UTC
heck, if I say, "I just got back from teh circus...saw this hillarious,...."

Oh...wait...what are you telling me, Hecks? Words have meanign based upon their CONTEXT?

Huh....so....a word used as a greeting can also be an insult, given the context? Is that what you mean?

That's very interesting. I'm glad you pointed that out. I'll have to think about that sticky little widget...

It would be an interesting intellectual exercise to make you come up with insults that would apply literally. You could call people "fuckers" I suppose, unless they're virgins. You could call someone a "bastard" but unless you're pretty sure about their biography you could be treading on libel. Hmm... interesting intellectual exercise. I'd like to see what you can do with it.

"Word of the day ..... coquettish"

I'm getting a mental image Krellin (yes I do have a mental image of what I imagine Krellin to look like) batting his eyelashes and giggling behind a frilly Victorian lace fan. It's... deeply disturbing.
krellin (80 DX)
09 Aug 13 UTC
Don't forget the dagger, hecks...gleeeeaming...

As for insults that apply literally. LibTard is a perfect concoction
LIB - from Liberal, a general political leaning
reTARDed: "Occurring or developing later than desired or expected; delayed." As in your understanding of political/intellectual issues is lagging behind where I expect it to be, and you have yet to come to a proper understanding of the world.

LibTard is a perfectly accurate insult.
krellin (80 DX)

So...your insult, is my accurate descriptor.

Really interesting thread.

I would prefer the forums are not moderated in any way for two reasons.

1/. People sometimes don't know where the boundaries are until they or others breach them. Some time ago I was doing some youth work, we took a load of 12-15 year-olds go-karting. On the way back one of the young men realised that I was the father of a girl in his year and started being obnoxious telling me what my daughter was up to and with countless guys etc. I completely ignored his comments and watched as his piers brought him back into line. He obviously thought originally that his friends would share the joke and bait me too. He had crossed a line, and now realised it. He has been a lot more respectful everytime I saw him after that event. Right up until the time I put his hand through the mincer (I digress).

2/. I'm not good at reading minds. I would sooner someone say exactly what they think. If they plan to throw paint at a Gay wedding or bomb the local airport - I'm quite happy for them to post those comments on here. I don't have time to decipher vague threats.

I think YJ may have seen the error in his ways (maybe, maybe not) but he only knows it is wrong after others have pointed it out. We all make mistakes, it the only way most of us learn.

Let this be a forum where we can express ourselves without looking over our shoulders, if we get it wrong, we'll learn here and hopefully become better people because of it.

1 whom in your opinion is my "libtard ally" or allies ?
I wasn't aware that I had any, ally implies a relationship / arrangement between parties,
there may be persons with similar views to mine, but I would suggest that is
coincidental, not the result of any arrangement or agreement that I have made.

Secondly, I have NEVER made any claims to be logically, philosophically, or even
theologically consistent in my views, opinions or beliefs.
I would clearly state that I hold views, opinions and beliefs, that are at times
INCONSISTENT and, or incompatible. Let's at least get that clear.

krellin (80 DX)
09 Aug 13 UTC
@hecks - why, pray tell, would I be the least bit concerned or interested in what you mental image of me is? lol Are you concerned about my mental image of you? Do you keep a sketch book of presumed-WebDip images?

What you look like is of the *least* interest to me. I truly think this is a peculiar questions...

Dear Krellin, who do you hate?
I'd like to start a game with some cool lefties/decent people, and figured the quickest way to work out who to invite was to ask you who you hated most. At the moment I'm thinking a game with Tolstoy, Major Mitchell, Thucy, Cachimbo, Hecks and Bo-sox would be fun. Did I miss anyone?

The Libertarian Rift
It is often claimed that divisions in the GOP run clearly along statist/libertarian lines, but this is frequently unclear in practice, as there are a good many other divisions and alignments as well (as in the Democratic Party). Here is a particularly clean example of the former, however.

Replacement for Summer League Games
Hi all. I am looking for someone who would be willing to replace one of the seven members in our Summer League. She abruptly decided to give up Diplomacy and her departure has halted our league play.

If you are interested in replacing someone who is in a great position in the League message me and I can send you more information. Thanks.

Hey Krellin
Could you warn me whenever you read a good argument against you in one of the many threads? I was thinking we might have to recruit some secretaries who can filter out arguments like Kafkatraps, complete fiction, partial fiction, anything including the word nigger, so we can focus on the arguments that can be considered worthy of your time. Post interest in becoming secretary in this thread and I'll get you a form.

How DARE Soldiers Fighting Religious Fanatics Not Be Religious?!
http://news.yahoo.com/u-military-problem-atheists-065000534.html
I find that ironic in the US Military's case (for the above-stated reason)...but it's an issue that crops up every now and again, people thinking that a lack of religious belief MUST mean you're "at risk," or "depressed" or a danger to yourself or others...how about we're not convinced by the "evidence" for God and think that Religion kills (and encourages killing at that) and leave us be?

* Are you afraid of clowns? Grown men in makeup doing socially unacceptable things, often to children? (Like touching, squirting them with water, etc. while hiding behind a mask?) Or are they innocuous fun?
