FIFA and goal line technology
Will finally be featured at the Confederations Cup and upcoming 2014 World Cup. At least one proposal comes from HawkEye, the company responsible for tennis boundary line cameras. The ref would have a small GPS watch-like device on his wrist that would tell him within a second of the play whether a goal has been scored.

Engineering and Education
I know we have a lot of Engineers and Educators here; I was hoping to get your opinions on the following:

@Ora

Electrical Engineering

Yes, I would most likely do something along the lines of material science/nano electronics, as that's what my MS was in (Modeling nanoelectronic structures).

@Thucy

The real problem is that the US, as a whole, hates educators. Not really sure why, but it's about as ingrained as our love of guns. In another country, I wouldn't be having this problem at all, but I think it behooves me to consider the reality of where I will work when making my education decision.

@ful
1) I would be doing research. In education, not engineering. And, since that's what I'm more interested in (on a PhD level), that seems to make more sense.
2) Not much. I would spend most of my time as an RA. If I'm lucky, I'd TA for 3-6 classes during my 3-4 years in school.
3) Yup.
4) You're point? If I get a PhD in education I will have also published papers.
5) I guess it's a question of whether it's better to network with educators or engineers.
6) Sure, but at the moment, there isn't anything in EE that interests me enough to *start* a PhD.
7) Yeah, I know. But why would I get a degree in something I know I don't really want, when there's a more applicable degree available?

@krellin

Yeah, no thanks. My interest in cars in next to zero.
Have you thought about the Peace Corps?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Santa

No, but I have considered Teach For America.
You aren't going to teach Engineering in Teach for America, you most likely will teach engineering on some level and get experience in the Peace Corps
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I would have to look into it. I really know nothing about the Peace Corps.

@abge - "Yeah, no thanks. My interest in cars in next to zero."

That is exactly why you *should* go develop self-driving vehicles. You have no interest in cars and driving so self-driving vehicles that are then used like the smart cars in Calgary and other places around the world (sort of a grab and go cab) might be right up your alley. Releive the world of our classic way of looking at transportation via the personal automobile.

But don't you dare touch my beloved Corvette, Jeep, or Mercedes. :-)
you should, it seems right up your alley

@Draug

I *love* driving. I hate the very idea of self-driving cars.

I just have no interest in developing new cars, nor dealing with a bunch of companies that can't keep afloat selling cars in the car capital of the world.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Feb 13 UTC
As far as the car capital of the world, there are other better places to work (Tesla, Mercedes, BMW, Fiat, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, etc., etc.) but if you have no insterest in working on things related to cars (I was thinking Tesla with their all electric vehicles might be up your alley. You could work on things like battery systems and regenerative brakes. Things that have real world applications beyond just the automobile or even transportation.
krellin (80 DX)

Hmm...the OEM failure to stay afloat has much more to do with the burden of regulation and the excess cost of a labor force that blackmails them any time they start to get ahead of the game than it does with their ability to produce cars.

I'm not placing blame. I'm saying the industry is a shit-fest.

@ Abge if it is education in general that you are interested then I fully agree with you, a PhD in education is the way to go. If, however, it is engineering education in particular that grabs you then things are a little more nuanced and I would still be tempted to stay within the confines of the engineering department, always assuming that you can come up with a satisfactory principal supervisor. In the latter case you will after all have a wealth of samples on which to test your various hypothesis. I have a friend who is doing a Masters in I.T. Education part-time, while he teaches the subject during the day, the approach certainly works for him.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
14 Feb 13 UTC
No, I'm mostly interested in education as it relates to engineering (and science and math). I'm not overly interested in education as a whole.

...coupled with a US press corps that for decades touted foreign vehicles over US vehicles.

Case in point, a number of years back there was a Toyota Corolla, and the GM rebadge version. You could pick up Consumer’s Report and read about the Corolla as a well-handling, peppy little ride, and then read about the *same* vehicle, *same* engine/transmission as a GM vehicle, and it was sluggish and poor handling…
krellin (80 DX)
14 Feb 13 UTC
But yes - the auto industry is a very cyclical business, and very much impacted by economic conditions, whereas Education is a constant. The problem is when educators have no industry experience, they have a difficult time preparing student for anything but academia.

@krellin,

I'm not talking out of my ass. Half my family works in the automotive industry, in all levels from mechanic to VP of Engineering. It just doesn't sound like an appealing Industry for me.

And abge, don't feel bad about deciding an industry isn't for you. I can't work in the health insurance industry after spending just six months coding for a TPBA. Their whole goal is to screw the subscriber (especially TPBAs) so someone else makes a profit.

@abge, my interest in education comes mainly from the neuro-science of it along with the importance for social reasons; but i am particularily interested because i don't think you can have democracy without an informed population, and science literacy is shockingly poor - which means that the population can not be expected to make decisions about new technology or research - whether that be ethics or social changes. As tech progresses this can only become a bigger problem - unless effectively combatted by STEM education.

But i am yet to figure out how to sell the idea of science education to adults...
Draugnar (0 DX)

According to this, only the 5th Gen E80 Corolla was rebadged as a GM.

I don't think you can. By the time someone is 30, I think it's pretty much hopeless. Especially by the time their 50-70, which most of our policy makers are.

The only chance is to start fresh with a young batch of kids.
krellin (80 DX)
14 Feb 13 UTC
@draug - I may be mistaken on the exact Japanese rebadge, but it's common practice. It might have been a Geo Spectrum or Prism that I'm thinking of, which later became a Chevy when GM discontinued Geo.

Anyway, the point is, Consumer's Report ad other "car" magazine tended to be extremely critical of US brands for decades, and most ignorant consumers eat it up.

Same as Apple fan-boi-ism. Apple makes great products, no doubt, but there have been equivalent or better products around forever. Apple occasionally is first to market with good ideas, but then followers quickly come with superior products at half price, and yet according to press and public opinion (up intil recently) nothing coudl touch Apple products. Press has great influence over public opinion...

...which is why our politics are so fucked up.......and people believe junk science..

There...that should piss off just about everyone...

If you want to know anything about the Peace Corps, let me know. Planning on doing it in about a year and a half.

It truly can get you a lot of legit experience. You just have to be a pretty... shall we say... flexible person when it comes to creature comforts.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

In theory the policy makers can appoint a panel of experts... So at least that group will be informed when making the decision - but this is not democracy, or even representative democracy... I continue to despair.
FWIW I'm an educator and would not recommend an education degree unless it is to fulfill a requirement for a pay grade bump. If you have the engineering PhD, you can still teach. If you have the Ed. Degree and decide against teaching, what is it worth. I got my BA in my field, then certified, and got an M.Ed. later.
Randomizer (722 D)
18 Feb 13 UTC
The only places that require an education degree to teach are elementary and high schools and some of them are even dropping that requirement. If you teach at a university they rarely care about how good you are at teaching. What they want to know is how much money you can bring in with your research program.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
18 Feb 13 UTC
I would like to teach at there University level, which requires a PhD. I really don't want to do research in engineering as a career (which would be required to get tenure in an engineering Dept), nor have I found a topic in engineering that I would like to spend 3-4 years studying. Because of that, getting an engineering PhD seems foolish.

I could see myself, however, getting a PhD in education and being qualified to lecture for engineering courses while I do research in education.

If after three years I hate it, there doesn't seem to be much risk. I still have an MSEE to fall back on.

The Purdue program looks like it fits your interests exactly.

Whatever you do, don't do a phd in something you aren't very very interested in. from what i've seen, a phd takes a ton of self discipline, independent study and devotion to a very very narrow niche. i'd imagine that's very difficult / impossible to do if you aren't incredibly interested in whatever you choose to study. i'm sure you could handle the coursework and comps easily, but unless you really love the subject the thesis would be a huge grind. this is pretty much why i decided to give up on school after a masters.

Communism
I just recently realized that I know next to nothing about the main Communist writers. I have read Marx, and know the general principles of Marxism and Communist ideals, but I have no idea of the differences between Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Mao, Tito or Kim il Sung's particular interpretations of Marxist philosophy.

Could anyone care to explain to me in very brief terms the main differences between these, or could you link me to something I ought to read?

Woodrow Wilson question
Hi there, we have an anonymous "public chat only" game wherein one player is spamming the chat with blank space to prevent the rest of us making plans. Would it be within the rules to provide my username to the other players so that they can send me private messages under these circumstances? What if these messages were also copied word for word and pasted in the chat room? Just looking for a method of communicating under these circumstances.

Thanks.
