The actual result was so different from that predicted by the pollsters.
And yet the closer the media said the election was going to be the more money the candidates spent of advertising. Strange that.

51 States
I heard on the radio that there will be another non-binding vote in Puerto Rico to determine if they want to become a state. Other than the obvious problem of having a lot of out-dated flags, is there anyone who can tell me what the ramifications will be (for them as well as the current states)?

2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

At least an election run by the federal government would have some degree of consistency. Uniform voting procedures, methods, oversight, registration. There's a lot to be said for a system that doesn't have fifty different deadlines, hours, and ways of regulating an election. Talk about bureaucracy.

I really don't understand what you're saying. Do you think we wouldn't have had slavery if we had no States rights?

It would have ended sooner, for sure. Are you trying to claim slavers didnt hide behind federalism?

Too lazy to read all the posts. But here's some points I wanted to add:
1. Every states should adopt the voting system of Washington and Oregon. Here, they mail us the ballots and a very nice booklet full of information regarding each candidates -not just presidential, but state legislature, court justices and policy options also. Its so convenient, b/c we have no lines to stand in and we get to take out time in voting and vote with much consideration -we get to sit at home and google each candidates in case we have questions.

2. I actually believe Obama is capable. Not the best, and often with failures deriving from inexperience and mistakes. But he is, as someone said in one of the posts, the lesser evil for sure. Plus, liberal policies do stimulate the economy quite effectively, albeit not free from corruption. Only if the corruption and the deficit can be addressed, I'm more than willing to attach myself to the liberals for my life. And hell no not the conservatives unless they scrap the idiotic notion of trickle down economy or flat tax or the low tax-rates on the wealthy. And that isn't to mention the loopholes already in place...

Krellin, what the fuck are you talking about?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Putin

No, I'm not saying that. They certainly did. I'm saying they would have hidden behind something else if they had to. It wouldn't have made a difference because 1) most people either didn't care about or didn't like Blacks and 2) it made a lot of people very wealthy and powerful. If it doesn't federalism, it would have been something else.
FlemGem (1297 D)

"It would have ended sooner, for sure. Are you trying to claim slavers didnt hide behind federalism?"
No one is arguing that slavers didn't hide behind federalism. What we're arguing is that slavery was a reality, and it was northern states - acting on their states rights - that started the movement to abolish it. That is historical fact. That "it would have ended sooner" is pure hypothesis. An equally valid hypothesis might be that without northern states pushing abolition it would have lasted much longer.

Correct Me If I'm Wrong, But...
…I don't think I am.

Wasn't it the Republican party that said that Hurricane Sandy was going to decide the election by stalling Obama's campaign? If that's the case, why are they so reasonably, so honestly switching sides to gain sympathy? I mean, they've never done that before….
