Documentary recommendations?
Can anyone recommend a really good documentary? At the moment I am interested in the history of the European settlement of America. Maybe the Jamestown settlement or the Mayflower... that sort of thing. Anyone know of some decent docs which fit the bill (or any other great docs you think are worthwhile on any subject).

Is the Benelux geography the key feature in gunboat games?
I was writing a post on playdiplomacy's forum in a thread asking for country rankings in gunboat, and it struck me that the bottleneck between Switzerland and the English Channel totally changes the dynamic of the game when communication is gone. C/P from the post - read on.

NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

Emotional intelligence in part is a physical reaction that effectively manages and dissipates the build up of cortisol in the brain. This allows a person to think through stressful situations more clearly. I wouldn't confuse the phrase with pure emotions or intelligence.
Spotting liars comes down very much to your own world view because you may want to perpetuate another person beliefs e.g. I think Manchester United are the greatest football club in the world and am in complete agreement with another 200 million people worldwide. Much of what we think and feel is subjective.
The link between emotional intelligence and lying is a tenuous one.
krellin (80 DX)

So....if I read you correctly....President Eden has been living a lie, and it really, really bothers him???
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

When someone tries to hard to prove a particular viewpoint in the end it can just sound like their own personal re-affirmation of their beliefs e.g. the God-botherers on this forum, I'm not sure whether they are trying to convince us or reassure themselves.
Knowing and understanding what you believe and why you believe, whether you are right or wrong, is a good thing, it makes for a less stressful life. I'm content with the lie that Manchester United are the greatest team ever, it suits my world view and makes me happy.
krellin (80 DX)
19 May 12 UTC
What the hell are you talking about. Sounds like you are desperately trying to convince yourself of something....

No...the "God botherers..." (sigh...that in and of itself makes you less than intellectual you are pretending to be) are simply people that enjoy discussing a topic...much as you seem to enjoy blathering on about this one. The lame assualt on Christians is...well, it's lame. I wonder if you will make the same insulting comments about the political hacks that swarm these threads....Putin, PE, etc....who say the same nonsensical shit day in and day out. Oh....but that's high-brow intellectual conversation, right? So....according to you, if a topic has been done...it's DONE and should never be brought up again? Or...does that ONLY apply to religion? Pathetic, tiresome attitude you have there...
...wait, did he just say Putin and I say the same thing every day?

Now I know you've gone full retard
As for where I went, I was off playing a game against some incredibly stupid AI and decided to take a break to see if there existed in the world any force of sheer idiocy that could top the spectacle I'd witnessed in that game. Naturally, krellin, I thought of you, and returned, and I was not disappointed.
krellin (80 DX)
19 May 12 UTC
No, I did not say that you say the same thing as one another....I said you repeat the same political arguments day in and day out....or does your politics change? tsk tsk....poor reading comprehension skills, further degraded by your emotional responses which are shadowing the truth from you already feeble liberal mind...

But glad to see you came back to play, PE. I was worried for a moment (and that was just a very, very short moment....I'm not too tied up in any emotional response to you...) that I might have made you sad and angry...or maybe even made a tear fall from you eye, which would have been at once both horrifying and hilarious to behold. Ahhhh....I wish I could have been there to witness it....

Krellin
I spend my whole life trying to simplify things, I'm not an intellectual and wouldn't like to be considered one, it has zero value to me. I realise though that you if you find my comments on the God-botherers insulting then that tells me more about you than it does me. One persons insult is another persons common sense.
If I want to insult someone I have so many better ways to do it, do Putin and the Pres say nonsensical stuff every day, are they political hacks, I don't really know because I don't bother reading what they write ....... that's how I insult someone :-)
I wouldn't get hung up on religion in this thread, I did give a personal example that was non-religion related but you were attracted to my religious comment like a bear to honey, have you been bothering God as well?
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 May 12 UTC
Um, no one here forces their beliefs on anyone else without their consent. You are free to read or not read any thread you like. So the term God-botherer does not apply here. Epic. Fucking. Fail. for NiggerBaby.
Hmm. Self-described as having "high emotional intelligence"... I'm not sure about this article. The correlation the study cites, though rather vague (I'm curious how they measure a "higher ability to perceive and express emotion"), is something I can believe. I would expect those who are better at sincere expression of emotion to look for sincerity in others' emotion better than those who are not as good at such expression. I know personally, as someone who doesn't express emotion terribly sincerely or often, that I tend to be more cynical of others' expressions of emotion. The positive is that I do, indeed, tend to pick out lies more accurately than my more expressive peers. The negative, of course, is that I also misfire occasionally where they don't, and assume a lie where it isn't.
No one said anything about forcing beliefs on anyone, Draugnar. You and krellin should seriously just stop, your combined lack of reading comprehension is embarrassing to the community.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))
19 May 12 UTC
Pres, there you go making judgements about the 'community being embarrassed', do you actually mean that their comments embarrass you because I'm not embarrassed?
I think both Krellin and Draugnar are fascinating, I'd love to see what you all look like so I could have even more fun with you fucktards (and obviously take the piss as well, that goes without saying). Anybody got any pictures of themselves we can view and have a laugh at?

@Eden - In case you didn't know, that is what the term God-botherers means. So NiggerBaby most certainly did say that. Epic. Fucking. Fail.
As usual, you're completely incapable of understanding the larger point for minute, irrelevant details. Considering your intentional obtuseness I'm not sure if it's worth explaining what Nigee is saying, or whether I should simply point to the last gif.

Also stay classy with that whole NiggerBaby shtick

PE and Nigee and so cute when they let their emotions override reality. The way they truly believe their own warped version of the world...which ironically is a constant demonstration of what they are trying to deny...makes me giggle just a little. It funny the way PE gets so angry when people look at, and refute, the small details of his rants, and then he gets mad because his lies have been exposed while he tried to portray the "bigger picture".

This, mind you, is *exactly* the way Liberal policies typically fail. On the "big picture" scale, the "War on Poverty" sounds like a nice idea: Hey, let's make sure nobody is poor. It's only when you get in to the details of hos it works (or does not work), and when you get in to the details of how the money invested in the program has never been returned, and poverty is going strong, and that there isn't money to continue with many of the failed program....it is the ugly little details (let's call the TRUTHS...) that the Liberal policy fails. But, on the BIG PICTURRE (said with an echoing voice...) it sounds GREAT. Give a nice positive warm fuzzy feeling in PE's tummy, like when he drink pop a little too fast and the bubbles go up his nose and make him sneeze, and then he giggles while he falls off his chair...

'@orathaic - Conner brought down skynet. He didn't create it. So even if they went iback to the WWII and killed his great grandpa on his mom's side so she was never born, skynet would still have been created... Except it was the guy researching chip from the first terminator that rersulted in skynet's creation. Just a small paradox there.'

Draugnar, stop being so Liberal - if you kill John Connor before the first terminator is sent back then Skynet has no reason to send the first terminator back and thus there is no chip to study and skynet is never created... No paradox, No problem. The Conservatives Win! :)

'The positive is that I do, indeed, tend to pick out lies more accurately than my more expressive peers. The negative, of course, is that I also misfire occasionally where they don't, and assume a lie where it isn't.'

Thus your lie detection setting is calibrated for more false positives (where you detect a lie - positive result - but it was a false lie ~ ie the truth)

If i always assume everyone is lying then i get a hundred percent lie detection rate (all lies are detected as such) but obviously this isn't very useful...

I guess this study is saying people who are good at identifying displays of emotion ~ and thus see emotion in people's faces, get more false negatives.

They identify an emotional expression and associate that with the feeling and based on that they assume there is truth in what the person is saying.

Whereas people who don't pick up these emotional cues (Conservatives, lets say) are not able to identify (and thus be fooled by) these signals... Thus a really good lier (someone who can fake emotional cues, an Anarchist, lets say) is less able to fool an emotional idiot (Conservative) because they don't notice all the work put into making the lie convincing...

And note: there is no correlation between total Emotional Intelligence and lie detection... Which gives a bit of an insight into how researchers are using Emotional Intelligence.

@Eden - I mostly web dip from my phone nowadays and find it difficult to correctly copy paste the URLs so haven't seen the image. But I did look up the urban dictionary term for God-botherer and other places too and all of them spoke of forcing others to hear the gospel. So NigeeBaby most definitely knew what he was saying and said what he meant bit he was tucking wrong and you defending him makes you tucking moron.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

I've noticed as well how those Anarchists fake those emotional cues ....... dirty little Anarchists, are they similar to Commies and Faggots and Socialists ??
How do you normally recognise those Anarchists at cheese and wine evenings, do they wear funny clothes?

There is only one class of human lie detector in the world. It isn't conservative or liberal or democrat or republican or anarchist or Marxist or socialist or communist or even a parent (although they can be pretty good with their own kids if they are an involved parent but even then it breaks down on occasion. No the only class of people with the fewest missed lies and fewest false positives is the hi stakes and hi skill poker player.
krellin (80 DX)

Laughing that anyone is taking the original topic post seriously and is actually debating it...I, for example, would have found an alternate method to slam Liberals had the outcome of the "study" (or whatever it is...) were the opposite. Stop taking this so seriously...
