Marxism
Marxism is fundamentally a theory of history which should entail a commitment to social change; that is, a commitment to a socialist future in which the forces of production are not owned privately as they are in capitalist societies but under common ownership.

"But universal education of children, for example, has made society as a whole better in ways other than merely ameliorating the damage caused by peculiarity of situation (such as being born into a family where it is economically necessary to start mining coal at age 6). The universal education of children has promoted opportunities for advancement, fulfillment, and contribution to society for literally hundreds of millions of children, some of whom seized upon those opportunities and helped create, e.g., drought resistant wheat and corn which helps keep us relatively well fed regardless of the weather."
agreed, its why I support free education

Bob, I agree that resources are effectively infinite. But that is aside the point. Can Marxism work? If it includes the abolition of private property, which is Marxism, then now. If you say, Marxism doesn't have to abolish private property, well, I don't really think we're talking about whether Marxism works or not, any longer.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
18 Apr 12 UTC
I don't think he's saying that at all greg. I think he's saying that the concept of private property is irrelevant with infinite resources. Thus the clinging to property serves no purpose.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
18 Apr 12 UTC
So... basically... Bob's saying that if we can make our equipment infinitely small and we can mine extraterrestrial resources we should be fine with communism?
Yellowjacket's pretty close to the nub of it. Given essentially infinite resources, private property doesn't imply the deprivation of others. Whether an individual clings to private property under such circumstance is kind of irrelevant.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
18 Apr 12 UTC
redhouse the point is that private property is a holdover from times when to "have" means that others must necessarily "have not." In regards to food, shelter, healthcare, etc. this is no longer the case. Maybe "infinite resources" is a bit of a misnomer but I hope you can see the point.

Fascinating that Communism - where a group of elites dictate what all the Little People are going to do - is perceived of as egalitarian and fair, but capitalism - which relies on voluntary cooperation and agreement between people - is viewed as hierarchical and oppressive.
Emac (0 DX)

Private Property begins with the self. I own my mind. I own my back. So the collecive outlaws all private property and this theoretically creates utopia? Cool. Bob Genghiskhan, we are going to play a collective game of diplomacy and you will always be Austria Hungary as your part of the collective. You have not choice and you are in utopia because you are doing your part for the collective. Thanks Bob.
Fascinating that you think Communism is a system wherein a group of elites dictate what all the little people do. No, wait, it isn't. It's utterly conventional trolling.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
18 Apr 12 UTC
Well said, Tolstoy.

But does marxism necessarily HAVE to be as you've said? That's my real question. Why does communism necessarily imply absolutism? In my opinion it doesn't - and the social policies put in place by many capitalist societies reflect that.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
18 Apr 12 UTC
Genghis, are you suggesting that this isn't how communist governments of the last hundred years have operated?

Okay. So how exactly is the "Dictatorship of the Proletariat" going to work? How is the proletariat going to decide exactly how many 48-port POE network switches to produce this year?
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
18 Apr 12 UTC
Tolstoy, scroll up please, that's exactly the question we're asking. Nobody (at least not me) is pushing communism in it's current form (Chinese) on western society.

We're asking whether it could work if modified, what would need to be changed, etc.

Don't get all uber-capitalist on us man :P
As long as production decisions have to be centralized, it's not. That's why my predicate for the possibility of working communism is seriously advanced nanotech assemblers and enough resources to essentially end scarcity. Communism will not work while there is scarcity. I think it's the overriding duty of all individuals to speed the day when
Continued from above post due to my enormous, sausagelike fingers...

scarcity ends.

I grew up in a country which had a system of "self-governance". It was soft Communism, more or less. If you never experienced anything but capitalism, you can't begin to imagine the huge amounts of hypocrisy that I was subjected to, day after day after day. If the road to equality is paved with decades of big fat lies, no thanks.
Zmaj (215 D(B))
18 Apr 12 UTC
And, irony of ironies, the "distribution of work" was the biggest joke of all. When the system started falling apart and foreign capitalists finally came to our companies, the first thing they'd ask was "who is doing what?" Department heads would reply: "well, we all do a bit of everything". The capitalists would start investigating and invariably found out that one guy was doing almost everything, and eleven guys were just pretending to work. Then the capitalists would usually promote that guy to department head. I adored capitalism. The only ones that hated it were the lazy bums.

The thing about Marxism is you don't implement it ... it implements you. (I realize this sounds a lot like a soviet russia joke but bear with me)

The idea is that the historical course of history will naturally lead to a class of people who don't own property, and when this happens there will be a revolution to a new system.

WE CAN'T IMPLEMENT COMMUNISM.

Trying to do so is bound to fail, as we are all still part of the bourgeois class.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

Nice, Zmaj. What country?
