Should +1 bump a thread?
In light of all the new uses for the +1 feature, should it also bump a thread? The con would be that the front page would have threads without new replies while new replies might be buried. Thoughts?

A Tribute to Mr. Calhamer
Draugnar pointed out that this is the creator of Diplomacy's 80th birthday coming up this December 7th and I've got an idea on how we can say thanks in a way that shows him just how many and how far his game has captured across the world.

Hypothetical move
Let's assume that St. Petersburg is surrounded. Norway and Finland are going to support Barents Sea in. Armies in Livonia and Moscow could support the hold in St. Pete's, but a German army may cut Livonian support. If St. Petersburg hits Norway to cut support, and Moscow supports Livonia into St. petetersburg, would everyone bounce?

i'm pretty sure, "if you can't say anything nice, mute them so you don't say anything at all"; works just fine.
"I'll make sure my son isn't a spoiled little brat so he doesn't turn into a tool like putty."
Is this supposed to be irony, or are you just stupid?
Putin33 (111 D)
17 Nov 11 UTC
When did I become "rich", again? These riches would really be useful right about now.

Is it the new trend to "mute" someone only to talk about them endlessly over and over again? Is there some kind of macho satisfaction knowing that you're insulting someone in an echochamber? I don't get it.

You must not hate me that much if you can't keep my name out of your mouth.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
17 Nov 11 UTC
@Putin, hate is much like love, you can't get them out of your mind...
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Nov 11 UTC
Putin must be confusing hate and indifference again. Hint: hate is related to contempt and means the person is thinking about you, just negatively. Indifference is not caring about or thinking about you.
Putin33 (111 D)
17 Nov 11 UTC
Then this muting business is just transparent posturing, isn't it? Strat isn't going to ignore me. He's obsessed with me.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
17 Nov 11 UTC
no, he hates you so much he has muted you... perhaps with time his hate will become indifference, mostly due to not seeing/hearing you.

Though i don't understand, i think Putin has been rather rational and reasonable in most discussions.
Theory of relativity applies to everything. In the eyes of the irrational and unreasonable, the most rational and reasonable man appears to be a lunatic.
stratagos (3269 D(S))

@dD - re: "spoiled little brat" - in my experience, without fail, the number of self described socialist/communists who come from the lower income brackets is a much smaller subset of the proportion who have upper-middle class upbringings.

I don't really know anything about Putty; I'm just making assumptions based on statistics. Given that he's been pretty consistent in his use of broad brush attacks against me in the past, I'm not really feeling shame about that. I really don't care enough to find out, and even if he agreed to tell me, I doubt I'd believe him.

re: theory of relatively: Oh, I don't think I'm the most rational and reasonable person here. Him thinking I'm a lunatic seems to have more to do with me muting him than anything else

@Ora - I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on that one. While I freely acknowledge he's not some stammering imbecile who can't make a coherent thought to save his life, his dogmatic insistence that anyone who disagrees with him is either an idiot or part of The Conspiracy takes him squarely out of rational territory for me. IMO he's not interested in a rational exchange of views; he just wants a platform to monolog *his* views, and I find that boring.

I also must note that Putty was *not* the genisis of this thread; it was something I was reading on Fark, where things were rational for a bit and then everyone went COMPLETELY INSANE in response to a troll I had muted. The only reason his name came up was that he apparently said something in here that pushed someone else over the edge into muting him.

Get over your persecution complex, Putty. Unless I mention you by name, it aint about you. And the only reason I'd mention you by name is if it was obvious that the reason there was 120 posts in a thread was that people were responding to whatever ignorance you had spewed in the thread.

"Then this muting business is just transparent posturing, isn't it?"

My thoughts exactly.

I'm going to mute someone and then tell the whole world about why I'm doing it while referring to that person in every one of my posts so that he can be made an example of in my effort to convince others to mute him.

Nope. Nothing irrational about that at all.

Strat...the purpose of the mute button is to mute someone so that you don't have to deal with them. But as far as I can tell, all you've done is use it as an excuse to talk about him.

Just mute him and be done with it already!

Personally, there is no one on here that is even close to mute worthy. I read it all and I genuinely like (as semi-anonymous internet forums go) everyone on here.

This muting nonsense is no longer a convenient service for much of you anymore...it's become a tool of propaganda.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
17 Nov 11 UTC
D, I already *did* mute him, weeks ago - *I* didn't bring his name up, someone else did. And only because he chose to post in this thread. As stated in the post DIRECTLY ABOVE YOURS, the genesis of this thread was an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SITE. Granted, I have relatively few people muted here, and he's the only one who keeps trying to pick a fight, but - as amazing as this may be to him and you - I really don't give two shits about him.

The main thesis of this thread was *mute people who annoy you rather than getting pissed off*, not *mute the people I mute*.

As for Putty, he apparently made an (incorrect) assumption that any discussion about muting is all about him; if he doesn't want me to talk about his ass, then he needs to stop going out of his way to say "Look at me, LOOK AT ME!"

I don't talk about the *far* more obnoxious Tettleton because TC *doesn't do anything that brings himself into the limelight* except for his stupid threads, which I do not see. Putty apparently posted *multiple* times in this thread, which people responded to, and hence his name is once again right there.

In other words, putty, if you *quit making an ass out of yourself* by trying to get a response out of me, I won't have any reason to refer to you. And, believe me, I'm *perfectly* content with that.

As for "muting as a tool of propoganda", I don't really have a problem with that. Ostracism has been so pervalent throughout history because it *works*, and if a (generic) internet troll isn't getting the response he or she wants, perhaps they'll start acting like less of an idiot. If they (again, the generic "they") feel they're *right*, then more power - but that doesn't mean I have any obligation to listen to their theories about UFOs or the Lumber Cartel or the little people who talk in their ears in the middle of the night.

If you want to be a martyr because you are convinced in the rightness of your cause, then keep on trucking - but accept that if you're going to be a martyr to your cause, you're probably gonna bleed for it. And if you're being a martyr just to get attention, perhaps not getting attention will cause you to reconsider your priorities.

And just because you're willing to be a martyr doesn't mean you're *right*

Muting, to me, is like having the right to turn off the TV or change the channel when some talking head comes on and starts spouting stupidity that was handed down by another talking head from the same "Stupidity U". After a while, if all that channel has is members of "Stupidity U" espousing their grand ideas for change, then I remove the channel from my favorites on the cable bax so I never have to watch "Stupidity U"'s mouthpiece parrots again.
