The problem I have with racial slurs is that when you start policing for them, you find that there are widely varying sensitivity indices. Sure, certain ones definitely should get hit, but then you end up with a case like...

There was a local coffee chain named Beaners (a reference to coffee beans) whose name was wholly innocent and not at all intended to be a slur. Eventually, though, it got to a point that either they were litigated against or sick of having to explain it or something and changed the name to Biggby's. That's annoyed me ever since.

A "beaner" is a pretty widely used (in my experience) derogatory term for Hispanics, specifically Mexicans.

OK. Around here, the term is "wetback". Funny story, sort of related. A friend of mine is a huge Star Wars fan and had to fight to get his custome plates: DEWBACK. Seems the idiots at the DMV thought it was a racial slur and didn't know it was a type of animal from the Star Wars universe.

"Wetback" is still used in Detroit too, there's just a differentiation where "wetback" tends to be more intended to suggest illegal immigration and "beaner" is more to address the ethnicity as a whole.

I actually did a large presentation on the etymology of racial slurs for a geography (of all things) class last year. It was actually pretty fascinating stuff.

Ah. They sometimes get referred to (as a whole) as Mexican'ts around here. Seemed to catch on after Once Upon a Time in Mexico had Johnny Depp ask an aquaitance south of the border "Are you a Mexican or a Mexican't?" Mind you, I don't like either term. If someone is here legally looking to better themselves, more power to them. I just ask that they not expect me to learn their language when the unofficial language is American English.

Eh, ethnic communities throughout the states were pretty resistant to learning English, at the turn of the twentieth century we had nearly as many foreign language papers printed domestically as English ones. However, during WWI, WWII, and the various Red Scares, efforts were made to homogenize those groups. I, in my experience (and everyone's experiences are different) have never had a situation where I felt I had to know Spanish...although, it might be different for me since I do know Spanish.

Actually, my biggest problem is communicating with Indian nationals (i.e. from India) and in the IT field, communication is key. The funny thing is, they are speaking English, it's just not easy to follow them sometimes. And I hate saying "them" there as many of my peers from India speek perfectly acceptable English. I just get frustrated by those with such a heavy accent.
