Dr. Hackenbush or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Look On The Bright Side of Life
I love philosophy/literature, sports, Trek, and comedy, and as I've already done threads on two (three) two of my three favorite things (four favorite things) four favorite things, it's time to do the third thing (fourth thing) foruth thing and pay homage to The Top Comedies Of All-Time! (So, nominate away (3 per person and has to be an original film, ie, no Shakespeare or Greek comedies) and when we get enough, say, 20 (or 42?) we'll vote for the Best Comedy Film Ever!

The Killing Fields.
Pardon Us (Laurel and Hardy)
Carry on Cleo (contains the line voted the funniest one liner in cinema history).

Hmmm, there are a lot of movies I love that are not strictly comedies, but contain very comedic elements, ie. The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, In Bruges or the Princess Bride. But in the interests of keeping this list as pure comedy as possible, and narrowing down my choices, I'd have to say:
Dr Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (A Peter Sellers movie had to make this list, and I considered the original Pink Panther, but I think DSOHILTSWALTB is probably his single greatest film)
A Fish Called Wanda (like Python, but less silly)
Toy Story (I know that's a kids movie, but with that film, Pixar really, really started something big)

I can't say I have an all time top three, as they tend to change quite a lot depending on various factors (mood, what I had for breakfast etc) but the top three I'd like to watch right now are:

Ruthless People
Trading Places
Kick-Ass

I can't believe they haven't even got a mention yet :(

38 replies, and no mention of Airplane!? Surely some mistake.

So my 3

Airplane!
Month Python & The Holy Grail (far funnier than Life of Brian)
The Full Monty

And when we vote, I'll vote for anything (even Woody Allen) to stop the laugh-free borefest that was 'The Hangover' from winning.

Toy Story isn't a comedy.

I like to think that I have good taste in movies, but when it comes to comedies I'm hopelessly lowbrow. So it's painful for me to admit this, but my absolute favorite comedy of all time, hands down, is "Ghostbusters." I've seen it at least 20 times, I can't watch the final battle without laughing until I cry. Seriously. And #2? "Better Off Dead." Arguably deserves a place on the list as a cult classic.

PS--Octavious, I agree that "Ruthless People" is totally underrated. "This could very well be the stupidest person on the face of the earth. Perhaps we should shoot him."

@obiwan

I've only seen one version of The Producers; don't know which one. And by "seen," I mean like 20 minutes of it because I was literally in pain from watching it. It was just very over-the-top. They were too loud, their gestures were ridiculous, everything was over-done. Again, that works really well on stage, because it's hard to see what's happening, but on film it's just terrible.

I thought Monty Python was funny, but I didn't think it was great. The real issue is how much everyone else seems to love it. I'm not really the type that dislikes something because it's popular, but COME ON. I've heard that stupid African Swallow joke more times than the Pledge of Allegiance. It was funny, but it doesn't justify every person in the world repeating it for no reason. And it's like that for every part of every Monty Python movie. I find it so annoying that I actually wish the movies never existed.

I definitely think that Monty Python is the funniest thing I've ever seen. So yeah, that's it. The Office is second though.

English or American Office?
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

I'm a bit of a Monty Python hater as well. It's not terrible, but its really hit and miss for me. Solid list going though, with a special shout out to Young Frankenstein which is a great movie. My favorite comedy not on the list has to be Office Space. It should be mandatory viewing for everyone.

Yes, Office space is great.

Also, can we add In the Loop.

What about the parody of the parody, Shriek!
Thucydides (864 D(B))

#4 Pink Panther (Steve Martin)

haha. I love both those movies, don't get me wrong.

"Clouseeeau!"
@Thucy

I thought about Schindler's List, but it's a little too reliant on slapstick for me to rank it as the best. That scene with the guy fumbling to make a watch was played just a bit on-the-nose for my tastes. Although, to give it its due, that scene when the Jews go camping is gut-bustingly hilarious.

2 Kentucky Fried Movie
3 Obligitory Monty Python pick: Meaning of Life (Death for Tea is frickin' of the charts)

CDs taken over by bots
There are quite a few decent algorithms out there for playing Diplomacy. Sure, they do not negotiate, but they do make decent choices based on the situation. Why not implement one of them so when a player goes CD, such bot simply takes over the country, until another player steps in?

wtf?
we all know that news is more entertainment than current events, and everything has a spin. Lately though, I've been feeling like I'm living inside a reality TV show or something. Everythings 'gone pear shaped'.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Causality, Divinity, and Free Will (To Power!) ;)
OK, so a bit of a hiatus after that GREAT Philosopher Knockout Contest (congrats to Plato, Seneca, Kant and Locke for being selected as the Rushmore of Philosophy...I'm sure they're honored.) ;) Anyway, fresh from my Philosophy of Religion class to the WebDip forums: Does causality prevent free will (at least as we conventionally think of it), would a deity do so...and just how free CAN mankind be? If there is no/limited free will, is morality a farce?
