how does ranking work?
All of a sudden with my three recent wins (note: first three) and a slew of draws my ranking magically existed. How does it work? Is it point based or stat based?

Independence Day Countdown, Day 2- Football vs. Football
So, Day 2 in my two-week countdown to my favorite non-December day, July 4th, and seeing as how it's also the World Cup, and there was another thread of Football and...well, Football, or, rather, Soccer, here, let's kick off (pun TOTALLY intended) this discussion of all things Football and Football. Comparisons? Your favorite teams? Moments? (And how big is the US going to win that Cup by? I admit it- didn't care for it at first, but I've caught Cup and Football Fever...)

Draw or not Draw: This is the question (cit. Hamlet-Angelo)
Dear All - I'm faced with a dilemma: Should I agree with a draw or should I continue to play until I'll win or I'll get in a position of stalemate? I'm playing for Turkey and I've not a lot of experience (this is my 2nd play). Link:

@ Angelo:

Cut the crap. Your English is fine. You're making a mockery of the forum rules by pretending that you have a friend playing in the exact same position that you are in, and joking about it. Either A. You are making a joke of this situation (Read making a mockery of the rules) or B. You actually expect us to believe it, making you an idiot.
Mafialligator (239 D)
22 Jun 10 UTC
Obviously he's joking. Second of all it's a game, everyone needs to relax.
I realize that the other two players in the game would also need to weigh in to make this point valid, but in this case I really don't mind Angelo asking for advice. He's new to the website and the game, and looking for a little guidance. Let's cut him some slack. If he were asking for strategic advice that would be different but he's not, he's just asking a basic procedural question. It's really nto a big deal.
Mafialligator (239 D)
22 Jun 10 UTC
By "everyone" I mean rlumley.
rlumley (0 DX)
22 Jun 10 UTC
We started out nice and relaxed. We gave him some good, general advice, and then he intentionally continued to do something that he had been informed he shouldn't do. When I pointed this out, he played stupid, and pretended that he was actually asking about a friend of his.

That's the point at which I get pissed.
TheRavenKing (673 D)
22 Jun 10 UTC
Especially since he was quite sarcastic with the rosaries and candles. rlumley isn't trying to beat him down, just explain to him that asking about specific games is bad form and, technically, cheating. Some people resent when they get screwed out of a draw/win/survival because one player is getting coached on the forums.
Mafialligator (239 D)
22 Jun 10 UTC
Yeah but the second question he asked under the guise of asking about a friend was an etiquette question. Namely if one is winning because of a CD, is it fairer to take a draw with a remaining player rather than go for the solo that would only be possible because of the CD. It's a pretty general question, he just handled it with humour, which seems to be what set you off.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Jun 10 UTC
I agree with Mafialligator. This was an etiquette question only. Did he get a bit flip? Maybe, but I just viewed it as a sense of humor gone awry.

@Angelo, just come out and say "your firend" is you for rlumley's sake. Nobody (except rlumley) views your second question as asking for specific game advice.
Amon Savag (929 D)
22 Jun 10 UTC
Go for the win, and step up your tactics. That last move was heinous.
rlumley (0 DX)
22 Jun 10 UTC
I didn't even read his second question. I stopped at "I've a very good colleague".

But he is still directly referring to his only game, where he benefited from a Russian CD.
If multiple people leave in the first year -- particularly in one theater of war (most recent example, a Germany in one game had England and France CD) -- then I would extend the draw or cancel offers right then. If the group decides to play it through and someone quits halfway, I don't offer cancel and I rarely offer draw. The reason for this is because immediate CDs occur for extra-game reasons almost all the time they occur (someone forgets to show up, loses Internet, etc); that shouldn't let someone have a supreme unfair advantage. Halfway through the game, though, most CDs occur because someone quits after being invaded and beaten down. In that case, it's extremely unfair in my view to offer a split of the pot because someone was so successful at an invasion that the person quit, and beside that it strikes me as unfair that someone would work to achieve an advantageous position only to be required to surrender that because someone else couldn't be arsed to stay online.
And by the way... come on, dude. You linked us to the game already. Don't tell us it was your colleague.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
23 Jun 10 UTC
"then he intentionally continued to do something that he had been informed he shouldn't do." - yes but you are not applying this 'unwritten' rule as the rest of the forum would interpret it.

He is still trying to decide how to proceed. Whether to draw or not. So sure if the other players are trying to force him into a draw when he can clearly solo (i haven't looked at the game so i don't know) then he should probably beat them.

If the game has been ruined because of the civil disorder then all players can agree to cancel, but only if everyone agrees. (and yes, winning in the circumstances where everyone else thinks the game should be cancelled is kinda crap, but everyone else trying to get you to cancel should not prevent you from winning a game.)

And when i suggest cancelling (as opposed to drawing) i mean cancel and start again. New game, find the extra players to fill back up to 7 and everyone can have fun.

Anyway, @Angelo "do NOT draw, it will be recorded as a draw while cancelling will remove the record of the game from the system." everyone gets their points back, all the time and effort spent on the game becomes nothing, but you have gained expierence and learned much about your opponents - play them again and the game will surely be more interesting.

my humble opinion.

Do CDs get their points back if the game is cancelled?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
23 Jun 10 UTC
Also your colleague should decide whether the game is worth winning; cancelling the game because it is ruined or if everyone agrees playing til the end are both valid options.

What it depends on is whether he values the relationships he has devleoped with those other players (the nice ones who didn't CD) more than the game itself.

If the game is ruined then it has already lost it's value.

The other players may be happier to play with him again and he will have a chance to beat them in a 'fair' game; but this IS meta-gaming.

Then again everonye decides whether to play a game AT ALL based on information from outside of the game. (so it is all meta-gaming in some sense...)

To TheRavenKing:

Dear TheRavenKing,

the concern with "the rosaries and candles" was not sarcastic as you feeled. In my culture, Roman Catholic education, light candles is a diffuse custom and say the rosary was for my parents a diffuse custom too (which I must admit, under the joung people, like me, is more or less a rare costume). "Sarcastic" is to my opinion a non-appropriate definition. Probably is better to define my way to ask for sorry as "humoristic/theatralic". But any way: I apologize if I offended you (or your cultur) with my "made-in-church hurmoristic/theatralic example".
In addition, I would like to calm you: Yeas, I've understand already after the second reply (of Mr./Mrs. hopsyturvy) that is not allowed / is not good to link and/or ask for a help about the play.
Therefore, I diskussed my inexcusable fault with "my good colleague" and he explained me about his "philosofically question" about the fairness to win a play if he has been advantaed by players which leave a play. Sorry if this "philosofically question" was for you so wonding.
I hope, I was able to explain you situation.
Again many thanks for your fruitful help.
Best regards

To rlumley:

Dear rlumley,

Many thanks for your feedback. Very interesting.

Let me just make a remark: It is not good (to my opinion) to get angry and use non-polite words (like idiot/crap/...) for my second question which you apparently have not read as you wrote in the forum

"...I didn't even read his second question. I stopped at "I've a very good colleague"..."

What for pity. There are enough politicien/journalist which have not the patience to read accurately, think about, and take position.

Many thanks for your attention.

Best regards

Angelo

Dear Raffaello,

Yes! Last week, when my wife walked by and I'm playing diplomacy I covered the screen, I riped out the plug, I cryed "go away" threatending her with a knife!
But... this was my error because she thought that I looked sex pictures (I hope I can use this expression!) and now she ask for a divorce.

Yes! A probably divorce just to be fair and to avoid a meta- / hyper- / super- / pluri-gaming.

What for a pity.

Sorry for my humorously remark. I hope you'll not missunderstood or feel offended by my remarks.

Best regards

Anyone seen it yet? Read reviews that said it's amazing... but also a lot of people are leaving this "children's film"... crying?

All my friends went to see it, and they said they cried MULTIPLE TIMES... they're theatre people, so maybe a tad emotional... but still- anyone here seen it, how good/bad is it... and did you cry?
