Cambridge,Warwick,Bath,Southampton,Bristol were my 5, down to Cambridge&Warwick, but I didn't do well enough in my exams (sure of that) so I'll have to see. Might reject Warwick and reapply, takin a gap year. Worst that happens is I just go to warwick anyway, because they do standard offers so I know i'd get back it (although then I'd be applying against ghost, and he's ridiculously clever!)

Clearly you aren't a university student. You will learn young one, you will learn. Also, I don't think it's worth it to wait a year to see if you can get somewhere better, unless you have a sweet plan for what you're going to do in your year off. The education you get at most institutions is pretty much the same, the real difference is probably the reputation. I chose McGill because the legal drinking age was 18 and Montreal is a kickass city and I knew I would have a good time. It was just the cherry on top that it was also the best university in Canada (not that this is saying much).

@figle - have u had your exam results yet then or are u estimating what u think u'll get? i was thinking of applying to warwick for my pgce, it looked like a nice uni. tbh my own uni experience wasnt fab n it was my first choice i reckon there s a little bit of fate in there somewhere but just go with what feels right, if needs be take a yr out n travel a bit.

Thanks for giving me the advice a year too late. My year off is already nearing its end, and I have nothing to show for it.

Nice, figle! Cambridge would be phenomenal, but Warwick is a very good school! If you've got a good idea of what you're going to do in your year off, and you have a good chance at Cambridge, than maybe it's a good choice to take a year off. However, Warwick will definitely get you places, and you can hold your chin up.

Careful with the year off though... I know people who've taken years off, and because they didn't really have a good idea of what they would do, most of them have since admitted that the year off was a real waste of their life. It's not bad if you've got good travel plans, or if you've got yourself a decent job.

"It's not bad if you've got good travel plans, or if you've got yourself a decent job." - The target wouldn't be the year off, it would be to redo the STEP papers in the summer and see how I did. The more this summer goes on the less likely it is I'll stay back, but we'll have to see.

honestly i miss the times when i was 17years old, didn't care about women and sex and used to play championship manager, billiards and ping pong all day long. you don't miss something when you avoid women and relationships. on the contrary not avoiding it will make you miss your lost innocence
