Question for mods
If someone is multi-gaming, are you able to tell just by looking at the network? I mean...I'm seriously getting paranoid that whenver a new player with zero finished game joins my game and seems like an expert already......

This seems really weird...
Of the 46 games I've finished, one has been won by Italy. I know Italy is considered to be the worst country, but a win percentage of just over two percent seems a bit low...

What about you all? Am I just an anomaly?

I've been busy as hell lately, so I'm only playing very slow games. I had 6 points left to spend and started a 72 hr game with them.

Mea Culpa
This is in regards to the babysitting I performed for Bunjeeman on the Dip game:
Bunjeeman asked me to 'babysit' his account for a portion of the weekend - he was going to be indisposed for a period of time, and would only be able to check his page infrequently and didn't want to miss a set of orders.

multi accounters
Why do certain people still insist on multi accounting? Apart from the basic honor principle, how fulfilling can it be really? A game I'm in now "pandasun" appears to be the same as "silly", and once one of his other MA's had been exposed seems to have started another. I truly enjoy the challenge of this game, and this site is easily better than others. This is now the third game that MA's have affected thte outcome. Help!

JDip - set up position
Does anyone know if it is possible to set up positions at later stages in the game using JDip? I realize that there is an edit mode but you seem to have to go through the motions of gaining an losing SCs in order to set up advanced positions as the unit count must equal the SC count. Any ideas?

To clear things up!
Hey guys, I just noticed something today while getting pissed at two of my new games. It appears a person named ramblin_fan has joined both games and slipped into CD. Now these are the only two games that he joined and it looks suspicious like I created him. I just want to clear up that I didn't and have nothing to do with him :)

guilt
Don't you feel guilty of stabbing?
I feel really, really, really (cannot emphasize how much) guilty when I stab someone, especially when you are forced to stab because there's no one else to expand on.

according to wikipedia:
The modern world is in consensus that Europe ends at the Aegean Sea, the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea and the Ural Mountains, but the boundaries between these latter three features are uncertain; that leading from the Urals to the Black Sea, for example, has been drawn by different authorities as at the Don, the Kuma-Manych Depression, the Caucasus, the Russian frontier or the Rioni River.

and encyclopedia britannica:
It is bordered on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the west by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the south (west to east) by the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, the Kuma-Manych Depression, and the Caspian Sea. The continent’s eastern boundary (north to south) runs along the eastern Ural Mountains and then roughly southwest along the Emba (Zhem) River, terminating at the northern Caspian coast.

I believe the only countries that are in contention are Christian Armenia and Georgia. With Azerbaijan squarely in Asia.
'Christian' Armenia?
Centurian (3257 D)
08 Jul 09 UTC
The majority of Armenians follow Christianity, which has existed in Armenia for over 1,700 years. Armenia has its own church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, which most Armenians follow. Christianity has a strong influence in the country, but there is a small presence of other religions too.
djbent (2572 D(S))
08 Jul 09 UTC
i think armenia is historically more associated with areas now under turkish and iranian control, so let's place them in asia. georgia, i don't know what to say.

@dingle - armenia is christian, unlike turkey and iran (two of its neighbors) and a number of other areas in the caucasus mtns.
I realize Armenia is Christian. But its odd to refer to countries by the religion of their majority. I didn't see Catholic France or Poland mentioned, nor Christian Georgia.
Centurian (3257 D)
08 Jul 09 UTC
Oh, sorry. I said Christian Armenia and Georgia, meaning both of them, in contrast to majority Muslim Azerbaijan. I was implying that their religion of majority is a factor in what continent they consider themselves part of.
djbent (2572 D(S))
08 Jul 09 UTC
ok. well armenia is kind of unique as a christian ethnic nation and nation state with deep roots in asia? or not.

so what do you think, is georgia part of europe, or asia? i bet they are angling to join the EU so classify themselves as europe. but maybe we can consider them as both, like turkey?
Ohhhh. That makes sense. I didn't see what their religion had to do with their geography, though your implication makes sense. That must confuse the Albanias and Kosovars though.
Centurian (3257 D)
08 Jul 09 UTC
Well thats from the Ottomans. They are Europeans no doubt.

As for Georgia, although they are generally considered Europeans they are not getting into the EU. Its hard being considered a stable country if you are getting invaded by Russia, never mind meeting EU qualifications..

yeh, but when you stab a good ally, and you do it because if you don't, you can't win....
Idealist I'm with you, I only stab when it will ensure a win. Or, If I think they are allying with someone else and I'm going to get stabbed.

See, I feel SO guilty about stabbing that I forget when I stab! djbent seems to think I stab her as often as she stabs me :-)

There's a lot of mutual stabbing going on. I think my wife is jealous.

It's only human to feel guilt, but Diplomacy players have to be more than human... Cast off the feeble vestiges of an imperfect flesh! Embrace your inner Aspergers!
Chrispminis (916 D)

Yeah, I always feel some guilt, and empathy's a killer. It varies, depending on how much I like the player that I'm stabbing. Hm... does anyone think that there's a higher proportion of sociopaths amongst Diplomacy players than the general population?

Also, if we're arguing arbitrary continent designations, then despite Turkey's EU bid, I have to say that Turkey is mostly a part of Asia. The dividing line is the Bosphorus, and Turkey's weaker claim to being apart of Europe is the fact that it's capital lies in part on the European side of the Bosphorus. Russia's claim as a European country is because Moscow, it's capital, lies within Europe, though the majority is in Asia. It's really quite arbitrary though, because several hundred years ago, what we call North Africa would have been seen as firmly apart of the Mediterranean sphere, and probably distinguished from sub-Saharan Africa as it was closer to say, Spain and Italy.
Knights Dawn (100 D)

Ok,

The only one who cares about Tunis and NAfrica, is Italy. And nobody cares about them any way. And Turkey's SC's are in the European boundries, so I wouldn't think any one would care about a stab in Syria or Armenia

tunis and naf are often crucial in a stalemate line (or defeating one). and ankara and smyrna (izmir) are most certainly located in asia, not europe.

The best thing to do when you stab... make the OTHER guy feel guilty... remind them that it was their actions that lead you to the undesirable act of stabbing. make them feel bad for having driven you to stab them by not giving you the centers you expected... nay... DESERVED!!!

It is their fault... and they should feel guilty that they have caused you to feel this pain... to have to suffer with the guilt of having a bloody dagger in YOUR hand... all because they would not oblige your need to grow.

You'll feel so much better when you realize, its their fault they got stabbed. ;)

paranonia
Whenever a player with few games (total game (n): n < 5; no finished game) join my game, and he doesn't reply when I talk to him, or when he talks like he played this game for a long time, I start thinking someone is multi-gaming...and I loss the spirit to play. I think it's paranoia.
