I haven't exactly been active in the dating field, ever, because I haven't quite met the one yet, but my advice would be to make sure you're properly amazed and intrigued by her and make sure it shows. It doesn't have to be in a romantic way, but if she knows she amazes you, which can only be taken as a compliment (just don't get stalky), it's a significantly smaller step to "I like you", "let's talk in a restaurant/somewhere quiet" (about your common interests, ambitions, I don't know enough to fill that in) or whatever feels right for you.

I'm not sure how much of a danger or blessing the friend zone is, that's a bit of a seperate issue.

Also, laugh about it if you discover your communication skills are letting you down. Kind of like highlighting the humor. "Did I really just say that?! Clearly I'm better at creating art!"

I personally wouldn't ever fake interest. Be genuinely interested or don't pretend. That's probably more personal though.

The main thing that is likely to hinder you, in my honest assessment, is that you find it hard to remain calm and give things time. Work on keeping your cool, and do your best to be honest. Don't make up little white lies to make yourself seem more impressive - If she's ever going to be a serious relationship prospect (as opposed to the kind of one night stand you say you aren't into) then she needs to like your actual personality. Don't wear a mask.

Yeah, with my 'properly amazed' thing I mean you want her to get why you're talking to her (you like her interests, ambitions, think it's cool that a woman plays boardgames, whatever the truth is) so she isn't worrying about that, but keep it cool indeed. You don't want her to think you're doing creepy things like posting about her on game forums.
