Will BTC be the ecurrency when all this plays out? Who knows, but it's pretty clear people want something like this. Should you put your 401k into BTC? No, of course not. But, if you can throw some money in either to use for online transactions or to just see what happens, there really is no harm.

I'm pretty sure no one here is making that argument. Transferring money over the internet sucks for a variety of reasons. BTC makes it much easier, which is why people like it. It's not perfect, but it's better than most other options.

One example - I use bill pay for all my bills -- electronic transfer of funds. Boom.

I purchase things from Amazon, for example, all the time, which is a transfer from my bank account directly to someone else (without sales tax, no less)....cheaper than cash.

I transfer money from my checking account to my investment accounts bi-weekly, and to my children's college savings account bi-weekly without fees.

My father deducts money from my account to his once per month to pay my portion of a shared account he pays...no fee.

It requires the exchange of some basic information....and....I'm assuming that unless BTC are magic they will require the exchange of some basic information as well.

Now granted, these transactions are different than what yo uare referring to with BTC. and no doubt, were BTC to become mainstream, it would take about half-a-heartbeat before business were taking "transaction fees".

Transaction fees are what people charge yo for convenience. they are not magically applied to credit transactions...they are placed there by people trying to make money.

If you think BTC won't suffer the same fate, then you are far more naive then I imagined.

Direct connect between bank accounts is fine for close friends and family, but I would never use it for stores or between people I know less well.

No. People build the Blockchain because they are rewarded with BTC, making transaction fees unnecessary. Even today, you can pay a transaction fee for faster processing, but it is voluntary and significantly less than PayPal BS.

Other than that, a bitcoin is an electronic beanie baby...a cute gimick suckers buy because they think they will get rich, that tries to emulate a financial system....and technologically could....except it's not owned by the government, and therefore never will....which (again) renders it of little more long-term value than your pokemon cards.

The only reason transaction fees can be charged is because traditional transfer systems go through central servers and are locked down. Anyone can transfer BTC from one wallet to another wallet without any central authority to charge a fee.

Transaction fees are not "necessary" when I swipe my credit card, either. that doesn't stop them from being charged.

When a store has to start implementing a new system to track this new wonder currency, you will pay a fee for the privilege.

Yes, of course credit cards are more flexible than cash in some ways. But in other ways, internet payments really suck for a lot of things that cash is good at. If you haven't experienced that, well, good for you I guess.

Ever tried to send money to a stranger you don't especially trust and who doesn't have a Paypal account? (Down payment on a used car, lest your imagination go all wild). It's not as easy as you'd hope.

Credit Card companies charge a transaction fee to the store because they can. Stores sometimes pass that fee on to the consumer.

There is no central authority monitoring BTC so there is no one to charge a transaction fee on it. Now, some stores may charge a fee if you pay using BTC, but that is *NOT* a transaction fee.
