Diplomacy as a spectator sport
gameID=59681 follow the game here and discuss and comment as the game progresses; players will also contribute but as game is anonymous gunboat we don't know who is playing and who is shouting from the sidelines.

"could be a really interesting game with some good players and not a bunch of crap like some of the actual players. And this is specially directed to England and Turkey."

- heh, I'd put money on rdribbler2005 being germany ;p

Should we think about starting a new game? I'd like to try anonymous gunboat but with all the 7 players being known (but not their countries) and then a dedicated list of commentators who advise, support, critise etc. The players won't be able to comment. What do you all think?
JesusPetry (258 D)
21 Jun 11 UTC
It's a fine idea too.
I guess I was busted when Russia didn't move into Warsaw when I've asked access into it, so I'll stop pretending to be someone in the game.
What I want to discuss is:
Would it really be wise for England to move all to the West? Sure, he could help stop a solo, but wouldn't it cost his survival in the long run, when Germany were comfortable enough to take his centers?
Discuss. :-)

@Kingdroid - You will lose your money.

@Jesus - Well, I will put my money on you being Italy, as just Italy can make such a question when it´s obvious Germany can even think on attacking England now.

@Orathaic - If you are the second Austria you really did a crappy job too. And the first one isn´t work commenting as CD people don´t even deserve a line.

At this point, the question is how Germany and France could hold a line on Mars and Iberia. In the West, Italy will take Rum and Sev and will be staled on Mos/Ukr/War line. Germany could even support Russia back into Gal from War this turn to give Italy some more pressure.
Also, Germany needs to move into NAO to have some chance to help France into MAO. A good move will be Germany supporting Gas to Mars and moving Bre to Gas as this could make Mars safe.
JesusPetry (258 D)
22 Jun 11 UTC
It was a legitimate question! At which point a minnow should be really cooperative? Shouldn't he provoke a situation where he's absolutely necessary to the stalemate line?
Kingdroid (219 D)
22 Jun 11 UTC
Currently, he's absolutely necessary to the stalemate line.
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))
22 Jun 11 UTC
Well, England is back, but I guess he will do something stupid like attack Germany.
Anyway, Germany can support EC to MAO and Italy will have to decide if keep pushing or start to hold his position.
In the East, Rum can´t be defended, but Italy will have to consider if it´s worth attacking it now or defend his dots. Germany moving Boh to Vie with Gal support seems an interesting choice.

I'm leaving for a week on Sunday, could we pause then? Or, is there a way to have someone replace me without CD? I'll be backpacking so there's no way I could submit orders.
Kingdroid (219 D)
23 Jun 11 UTC
Or just draw, since the stalemate line is pretty much set up. Marseilles might fall, but there won't be any movement after that.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
23 Jun 11 UTC
i'm willing to force a pause if a draw is not reached.

but someone will need to pm me or i will forget.
JesusPetry (258 D)
24 Jun 11 UTC
Bah, I made a mistake that cost me any chance to win. I should have supported hold of MAO, but tried to hope for a good place to retreat from there, which was not a safe option.
Very well played, Kingdroid, EM and rdrivera!
Kingdroid (219 D)
24 Jun 11 UTC
That you did. I was a bit surprised at who played who I guess (especially fiedler as England due to his rather cautious play at the end). Well played Jesus, you bided your time, and although were a bit lucky with Turkey, I cannot fault your timing, or your overall play. it was pretty great.
Kingdroid (219 D)
24 Jun 11 UTC
Oh, and thank you to fiedler for not attacking me and ruining the stalemate, and to france for trusting me even though I did pull some sketchy moves there at the end.

Good job to rdrivera for holding the Eastern front.

Good game guys. I'll start another game shortly - I favour anonymous gunboat but with the players known (but not their countries) and only people who arn't in the gae can peak in the forum. Is that good for everyone?
Maniac (189 D(B))
24 Jun 11 UTC
We need 7 players who can keep quiet and a list of players who will contribute to the forum. I'd like the players to commit to quick builds/retreats even when they're losing so that the commentators don't get bored.
Kingdroid (219 D)
24 Jun 11 UTC

new game is set up = pm me for password gameID=62338 only if you are happy to retreat and build quickly, otherwise find some other game. The commentators will leave get bored and leave if people delay their moves.
Maniac (189 D(B))
24 Jun 11 UTC
@orathaic - can you force retreat and force build in this game if people are not finalising?
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))
24 Jun 11 UTC
First of all, well played Jesus, Kingdroin, EM and fiedler. And I probably owe an apologu for fiedler for some harsh commentary on this thread, I was just a bit unhappy with the NMR (I thought England will just give up when losing like Austria and at some extent Turkey).

About the game, I really like Kingdroid style, sound movements and some surprising one. I probably did a mistake with my first year build on StP but a 6 center Russia is always a targer and I try to show some good will to Germany, but I guess both Russia and France at 6 in first year force a strong E/G to form.
Then in the East, a really, really stupid Tukey killed any chance I have. Looking his stats after the game just proved that he really need to learn how to play. With Austria and Italy fighting he decided to go all the way against his stronger neighbour and also attack Austria at same time. Then Austria CDed and then the new Austria supported Germany into War instead of defend himself against Italy (I still need to understand that move). I was just waiting to be eliminated when Italy showed Turkey some lessons on how to play and I get some hope again. After that was just a race to see if Italy will get the solo before the West can set a line as in the East is pretty clear he will not go further then Rum and Sev..
All in all an interesting game but much less that it could be with better Austria/Turkey and more comments.

I think will just go for the commentaries in this next one.

:(

Thank rdrivera, well played to you too, I'm glad you didn't take the sacking of Warsaw too hard :P It was quite interesting trying to convince England and France we were done fighting, especially since my units were still in France, and England didn't want me anywhere near his SCs.

12-hour high stakes WTA gunboat?
Greetings all. I've set up a 12-hour per phase WTA classic gunboat with a password and was hoping to entice some of the more experienced Diplomacy veterans to join up for a high quality game. The entry fee is 333 D. Shoot me a PM if you want in. If you meet my moderately rigorous requirements (you've got some skill and don't make a habit of resigning games) I will send you the password. Thanks.

This Time On Philosophy
In "The Odyssey" by Homer, Achilles, the elite hero of the Greeks, leads a large mass of unquestioning, robot-like followers, the Myrmidons, who are classically described as being "ant-people" in their nature. If we were asked which we'd rather be, a hero or a drone, most of us would choose the former, "drone" doesn't sound appealing...and yet, politically, we prefer the rule of masses over the few...so, which is preferable? Why? Elitists, Pluralists, ho! :)
