"Just imagine, if America and their allies spent the same amount of time and money investing in peace as they do investing in war ......... the defence industry would be on its knees and there would be millions of extra people unemployed."
Yeah. That's a bad thing. "Defense" and "War" are *not* the same thing. Deterrence works. No one fucks with the biggest kid on the block. You do not want Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman to go out of business. The military-industrial complex are the good guys for the most part. Investing in peace is a waste of time and resources, and also jeopardizes national security. You were right about the unemployment part though.
@ Thucydides
How many countries hated us in 1880? Interventionism in recent years has been a dismal failure (especially in the case of Iraq) Nation building is not our national prerogative. If we intervene overseas, it had better be A) for a just cause (stopping communism, taking down asshole dictators who directly threaten America, etc.) and B) militarily possible. If some asshole dictator takes over Panama, Haiti, or Grenada, that's little more than a training exercise (albeit much riskier) for our guys. Occupying Iraq for ten years? Not such a good idea.

"I want to sign free trade agreements with every country in the world"
Yeah. Great idea. Let ourselves get under-cut (and therefore economically fucked) by every country with a lower cost of labor/capital. Fucking brilliant. What the fuck could possibly go wrong. I'm actually with the Democrats on this issue. We need to start making stuff here in America again (with a national right-to-work law, of course)
