I saw this wonderful news article on the BBC and I thought it was worth sharing - not only because it's so ridiculous it's comedic but also because it reminded me of our resident Swede, Vaft :)

I swear, every time I'm Turkey or England, people don't show up and screw thegame. If I'm Austria, though, everybody's there with bells on and eager to move to Trieste and Galicia right away.

Marxism
Marxism is fundamentally a theory of history which should entail a commitment to social change; that is, a commitment to a socialist future in which the forces of production are not owned privately as they are in capitalist societies but under common ownership.

And Drogzilla scores. I effing hate Chelski, but I have nothing but admiration for Drogba. It helps that they're playing Barca, who I fucking detest since their several year long campaign to stoke Fabregas' discontent. Seriously, fuck them.

Companion Grammar Thread for Losers
Out of moderate respect for ulytau's authority, I am creating a companion thread for people who have been eliminated from his other thread to keep arguing about grammar, ulytau's thread, and how unjust the universe is for disliking how they (yes, *we*... sigh) write.

The grammar game!
See below for the rules. The game is designed for your inner troll.

coldsoup (164 D)

Rules:
1) Must post at least 5 times with a minimum of two complete sentences each post.
2) First typo, grammar error, or misspelling causes you to lose.
3) Once you lose you cannot post here again.
4) Calling someone out on an error which forces them to lose gets you one point.

First person to 20 D wins! Have fun.

Hi my name is Fuzzyhartle1. I like to eat fish.
DiploMerlin (245 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Well, first of all I have to ask for a clarification of the rules. Who decides whether a sentence has a grammatical error?
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Mitt namn är Jonathan och jag tycker om att spela Diplomacy. Jag gillar också sex, men bara med djur. Djur är som människor fast mycket coolare och snyggare. De har päls och skit. Det är fantastiskt.

^- Completely correct Swedish. I dare you to prove me wrong.
coldsoup (164 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
The first person to point out the error gets a point. You win by getting 20 of said points. Does that make it clear?
DiploMerlin (245 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Fuzzy, you lose. First of all your name does not have a capital "F". And secondly, there should be a comma after "Hi".
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
17 Apr 12 UTC
That was quick, fuzzyhartle1.
Will you start a grammar intolerance thread now?
coldsoup (164 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
One point to DiploMerlin. Vaftrudner, that's not fair. Also, this is fun. Keep trolling.
DiploMerlin (245 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Well, that's not bad. I've already posted 3 times.
ulytau (541 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Vaftrudner is being perfectly fair. You denied DiploMerlin's request for clarification of the rules so Vaftrudner could only guess whether Swedish was allowed. Furthermore, you did not explain in what way was Vaftrudner unfair so here is my contribution: Z Brd plch pln skvrn prchl v trs chrp, frnkl vz vrch Smrk, zhltl čtvrthrst zrn, prv hrd vtrhl skrz strž v čtvrť Krč.
DiploMerlin (245 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
ulytau... Shouldn't there be a comma after "rules" in your second sentence? Just sayin'.
DiploMerlin (245 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
If I understand the rules correctly, I think I win. Is that correct?
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Get out of my grain, ulytau!
DiploMerlin (245 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Val... did you mean brain? Is that a misspelling?
coldsoup (164 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
No, you have one point. You need 19 more. However, when using numbers in a sentence it is proper to use the numeral for numbers greater than or equal to 10, and spell out numbers between zero and nine. Since you used the numeral "3" you lose. Finally, "sayin'" is not a valid word in any language. Sorry, ulytau, but you lose.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
17 Apr 12 UTC
What would happen if someone makes an accusation of error that is not actually an error? Would that person be penalized?

There are certain gray areas for grammar such as the ending of sentences with prepositions that may or may not be incorrect grammar. How do we account for these?

The British, I believe, put punctuation outside quotations. Americans put punctuation on the inside. I assume we are tolerating both.

And the use of commas is also very vague. In Ulytau's post, for example, the use of a comma after "rules" would be optional. Who will decide if a comma is truly necessary?
Mr A (386 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
DiploMerlin, small numerals should be spelled out.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Actually couldsoup, sayın in Turkish means "Dear...", as a polite form of address.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
17 Apr 12 UTC
Here's another issue: the word "which" is thought by some to require a comma following it. For instance, Coldsoup's fourth rule uses the word without a comma after it. As far as I know, however, Microsoft Word (at least) would tell him that this is a grammatical error. Thoughts?
Mr A (386 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Coldsoup, if I remember correctly the Chicago Manual of Style suggests that all numerals up to 99 should be spelled out.
ulytau (541 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Exactly, there was no need for a comma in my previous post. I deliberately opted for the more ambiguous phrasing to catch the attention of DiploMerlin and force him to make an unbased claim that would strip him of his lead in this competition.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
17 Apr 12 UTC
There is a fine line in "grammar" between a rule and a suggestion.

I suggest we hammer out this line here and now.
ulytau (541 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Vaftrudner, it's spelled "coldsoup" and you were supposed to wrap that word in commas from both sides.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
17 Apr 12 UTC
Again, Ulytau, that particular comma is not necessary. He only needs the one after the name to form the appositive. He did misspell Coldsoup's name though, you're right about that.

Why is it that no one else is holding to the rule about two complete sentences?

Can someone please answer my questions? They weren't posed in jest.
semck83 (229 D(B))
17 Apr 12 UTC
This sentence is altogether grammatical. This one is as well. And, no, DiploMerlin, ulytau's comma was optional. In fact, including it would have changed the meaning of his sentence.
DiploMerlin (245 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
lol. Got me on the numbers. I disagree with the "just sayin'" call out though. It is entirely legitimate to abbreviate words with an apostrophe, and #justsayin' is trending on Twitter.
DiploMerlin (245 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Oh, by the way, coldsoup is out because he said "5 times" in the rules. hahahahaha
semck83 (229 D(B))
17 Apr 12 UTC
That's not ungrammatical, DiploMerlin. It's just not preferred style. There's a difference.
ulytau (541 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
I'm afraid this game will cease to be funny without fuzzyhartle1's further contributions. He has been spicing it up.
DiploMerlin (245 D)
17 Apr 12 UTC
Sem... In that case, I'm not out?
