Dune!
A world game started getting overrun with Dune talk between myself, Draug, and Dunecat, so I'm taking it out of there and in here.

MVP of the NFL
So who's the MVP so far? Aaron Rodgers? Personally, I think its Peyton Manning. I dont think it can be stressed how valuable he is that a team that wins 11 games or more for the past decade cant win a single game without him. What do you guys think?

I think Payton Manning is the MVP -- seriously. How can a team lose one guy and not be able to win one stinking game?!? Just goes to show how great Payton Manning really is, and how much he meant to the Colts.

That aside, I think is has to be Rodgers -- he's phenomenal and is setting a new standard for excellence at the most difficult position to play in all of sports.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

Not Manning. Colts would have been a sub .500 team even with him.

Definitely Rodgers. Any other answer is just incorrect.

Tim Tebow. Enough said.

Rodgers easy, but I think Tebow is fair for discussion.

Tim Tebow did definitely turn things around. If it were his rookie season, I'd give him rookie of the year, but even as a huge Broncos fan, I don't think I can give the guy MVP. Manning either. You have to prove yourself for the current year. He won some MVP's in the prior years but not doing squat shouldn't earn you one of the most honored titles in pro football.
virtuslatin (130 D)

Rodgers. Tebow, while winning and deserving of credit, isnt playing exceptionally well by most standard metrics. And, with the exception of Minnesota, his defense deserves as much credit as Tebow. The hype around a guy that manages to put up appr. 20 D is only hype because the defense manages to hold the opposing team to less than that.
Darwyn (1601 D)

I think you can make an argument for Manning. But realistically, it has to be Rodgers.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
I think you have to give it to Rodgers because he is actually playing and putting up astronomical numbers. But I agree that Manning should be in the discussion. For the last decade, the Colts have had at least ten wins every season, and now that Manning is hurt, they haven't won a single game. What does that say about his value to the team?

I know who the LVP is! It's Carson Palmer and we Cincinnatians have never been so glad to be rid of a spoiled rotten crybaby QB as much as we are him.
While Rodgers and Tebow are up for debate, what about Cam Newton? The guy rushed for 3 touchdowns, threw 1, and almost caught a touchdown. I mean, talk about versatile. He is the only thing holding up the Panthers. I think that Packers would still do reasonably well without Rodgers, they have enough skill, and as has been said the Broncos D has been shutting down teams as of late.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Yeah, he's the only thing holding up the Panthers, but they only have three wins. Don't get me wrong, Newton is a great player and very well may be the MVP one day and is certainly the Rookie of the Year, but he needs to get a few more wins before he claims MVP status imho.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I hate it almost always being a QB, but have no non-Rodgers answer myself.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Really? Cam Newton Rookie of the Year? Not a chance! Andy Dalton all the way, man. He took one of the worst teams in the NFL and in his rookie year turned them into a contender for a playoff spot.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Andy Dalton definitely has a chance at the Rookie of the Year, but I view there turnaround as primarily defensive. Dalton has good numbers, but Newton has great numbers, and that's what I look for in the Rookie of the Year. Clearly the Bengals are a better team than the Panthers, but I'm just looking at individual stats here.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Dalton has 17 (count 'em *17*) TD passes plus a rushing TD. Cam has more interceptions, more fumbles, and fewer TD passes. The only thing he has better is his rushing TDs where points count. Sure, he has more total yardage, but doesn't get the ball in when it counts. Carolina is 4-8. Cinci is 7-5. Both have rookie QBs. Who do you think has the better QB?
fortknox (2059 D)

Peyton Manning doesn't play defense. And indy's D suuuuuuuuucks.... suuuuuucks.... I just can't say it enough how much it suuuucks!!
Draugnar (0 DX)

Yeah, a strong offense is only so good if the D keeps letting the opposing team through.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

"Peyton Manning doesn't play defense. And indy's D suuuuuuuuucks.... suuuuuucks.... I just can't say it enough how much it suuuucks!!"

Exactly. The Colts would have been trash no matter what. I could score on them and I'm a short, chubby white guy.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
The colts have never had a good defense and still won games. When they won the Superbowl they had a good defense. Other than that it has been sketchy at best. And draugnar, Newton has 26 td to Dalton's 18 and Newton has around a thousand more total yards and also has started to turn around an even worse team from last year. I'd take Newton over dalton to be honest, and I have no affiliation with auburn or the panthers
Draugnar (0 DX)

Wouldn't that make you a hobbit, Tom?
Putin33 (111 D)

Colts had a lot of injuries on defense. You can't win when you're playing 3rd stringers.
Putin33 (111 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Rodgers unanimous. 37 TD to 5 INT 3850 yards. Nobody is even close.
Hold on. Tim Tebow is NOT anywhere near the debate. The running game and defense are winning the games for Denver. He is clutch, and a great storyline, but that doesn't mean MVP. And this "he wins nuff said" bullshit can walk now also. Football is a team game, and Quarterbacks, especially a quarterback who is used by Tebow, do not win games alone.
Tom Brady should be discussed as always (coming from a Jet fan) Revis should be up there if it wasn't for the game 2 weeks ago. Cam Newton is a rookie of the year, but not yet MVP material. Calvin Johnson has slowed down, no dominant running back has been healthy enough, or his team good enough to be considered besides MAYBE one.

In contention I believe are

Brady
Rodgers
Brees

Winner is Rodgers hands down

This Tebow MVP bs is making my head hurt, and i like tebow.

It would be like arguing Sanchez for MVP last year, but sanchez isn't a fundamentalist christian and pales in comparison to the media interest in Tebow.

The Colts' losses have been due to SO much more than Payton's absence. To suggest that his absence is THE reason that they've lost all of their games straight is probably not taking into account many other things. Also, Manning probably shouldn't win MVP because he... Hasn't... Played any games???? Also, Rogers definitely WOULD get it, if Tebow wasn't tearing it up like he is.

Tim Tebow gets MVP from my corner because, although Aaron Rogers is an AMAZING QB, he isn't the MVP. He's on a team that is VERY good and wins lots of games.

Tebow is on a team that is really MADE as good as it is BY HIS PRESENCE AND ABILITY. Therefore, Tim Tebow is MVP.
Tebow isn't tearing anything up! Are you guys serious? He has an average of 15 passing attempts per game. He has less than 50% completion rate! On top of that he has had an extremely easy schedule and barely led his team over other fundamentally flawed teams. He's got the Bears Pats and Bills coming up. Lets see what he does against a real defense
2ndWhiteLine (2596 D(B))
07 Dec 11 UTC
You know what Tebow is tearing up? The wins column. And he already beat the Jets and their vaunted defense, in case your memory is failing you.
2ndWhiteLine (2596 D(B))
07 Dec 11 UTC
Plus, his interception rate is lower than Rodgers. He takes care of the ball and doesn't do stupid things, which leads to wins.
20 passing attempts a game, point remains, he is hardly even the featured offensive player on his team. How the hell can he be an MVP?

Programming Suggestion
I would like to see a bit of code added that automatically turned in an order for players who had zero SCs at the beginning of the build phase. Too many times have I seen build phase draw out because the guy who just lost doesn't put in the order for the destruction of his final units. Seems unnecessary.

Alabama or Oklahoma St.?
Which one deserves to get the second spot in the nat'l championship? Both are 1-1, oklahoma state has a conference title and more wins against ranked opponents, but alabama plays in a tougher division and had only lost to the no. 1 team, LSU. What do you guys think?

A gunboat variant where you could see who had joined but did not know who played each country. That would allow you to screen who you played with and could avoid obvious cheating red flags. Just a thought.
