Should +1 bump a thread?
In light of all the new uses for the +1 feature, should it also bump a thread? The con would be that the front page would have threads without new replies while new replies might be buried. Thoughts?

A Tribute to Mr. Calhamer
Draugnar pointed out that this is the creator of Diplomacy's 80th birthday coming up this December 7th and I've got an idea on how we can say thanks in a way that shows him just how many and how far his game has captured across the world.

Hypothetical move
Let's assume that St. Petersburg is surrounded. Norway and Finland are going to support Barents Sea in. Armies in Livonia and Moscow could support the hold in St. Pete's, but a German army may cut Livonian support. If St. Petersburg hits Norway to cut support, and Moscow supports Livonia into St. petetersburg, would everyone bounce?

Why mute is the best thing ever

I love coming across threads that are moving along nicely when they're suddenly derailed into a stupid argument about some nonsensical premise.

Why do I love this? Because it tells me that, once again, mute has saved me from having to waste my time reading an idiot.

I used to log out every now and then to see what I might have missed, but I could usually gather what the post was about by seeing the responses, and the posts were invariably either totally without merit, an obvious deliberate troll, or written by someone who is incapable of backing up their viewpoint.

"But Strat", you say, "what if the moron has a good point for once?"

Would you let a millionaire sodomize you five or six times a day on the off chance he'll drop a $20? There are so many *good* sources of information that it's hard to keep up with *them* - continuing to put up with an annoyance solely because they might not be annoying on occasion is just silly.

"But you let them win by ignoring them. "

Actually I don't. The people in ignore invariably crave attention, either because they're trolling, they feel a Duty to Educate the Ignorant, they derive pleasure from negative attention, ect. The most effective way to irritate them is to *not take them seriously*, as they believe they are worthy of attention. Writing their little posts and getting zero feedback is like... Writing a five paragraph offer of alliance to a power in diplomacy, and being completely ignored. It's frustrating, it makes them feel they're wasting their time, and it makes that little insecure voice they all have in the back of their heads remind them how unimportant they are - and likely always will be

I've been dealing with trolls on the internet back when Usenet was the big thing, and let me tell you - there is *nothing* more satisfying than knowing someone is slowly losing it as their best efforts at creating chaos as treated with amused contempt - or better yet, completely ignored.

Kinda like how you pretend to mute people? I think he was channeling his inner Strat.

I hate mute because it leads to confusion in threads. I feel like mute is overused. Also, your just a big troll anyway strat.

@strat: Don't worry. I only make fun of your waistline to make me feel better about mine...

@Tom bomb's Confusion, i've never been confused because of muted people...

but it does mean it's more important address your responces, so people can ignore the part what you reply to TC as they never read his post...
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
16 Nov 11 UTC
Yeah. I suppose I just need to do more of this:

@reasonable poster: Respect position. Argue other positoin. Bring in supporting info, reasoning while remaining respectful.

@troll who is likely muted: Go eat a dick.

That way the normal folk on the forum don't think I hate them.

lol strat I should follow your lead here.... poor Putin is just fuming at the mouth because nobody is paying him any attention!
Putin33 (111 D)

You and Strat have a funny definition of not paying attention, which evidently includes repeating my name over and over again for no reason.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

You are correct Putin.

Bad troll! No begging! Bad!
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
16 Nov 11 UTC
Actually, strat, you've convinced me. Though I thought it would surely be TC, I'm giving my first mute award to Putin. He's far to personal with his attacks and I've had enough of it.

Congratulations, Putin: I'm 30 years old and you are the very first non-bot I've ever muted in my entire life. Just to put how annoying you are in perspective.

A few months ago he wound me up so much I resorted to calling him a sociopath. I rather regretted it afterwards. Have you heard the one that goes along the lines of - ''if you can't find anything nice to say about someone, it is best to say nothing at all?''
Cachimbo (1181 D)
16 Nov 11 UTC
Are you sure you're not really "Full-Amish"? Because that sort of Christian charity doesn't seem to have good press here, and only a friend of the *L*ord would try to advocate it like that.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
16 Nov 11 UTC
@Fulhamish, that only works if everyone is playing from the same handbook.

"Turning the other cheek" is nice and all, but some people intrepret it as weakness, and just redouble their attacks.

Unfortunately, there are people who, for whatever reason, don't respond to anything but a swift kick in the ass.

In the case of Putty, the best I can offer him is that I pretty much ignore him, and encourage other people to do the same.

I freely admit that part of the reason this appeals to me is the knowledge that it apparently drives him nuts that I have him muted - and even the knowledge that part of the reason it was so appealing a tactic is that *even knowing that I'm doing it partially to vex him*, it still apparently grates on his poor little rich boy soul.

He's a good cautionary note, however, so I have to give him that - I'll make sure my son isn't a spoiled little brat so he doesn't turn into a tool like putty.

fulhamish (4134 D)
16 Nov 11 UTC
@ Cachimbo and Strat. There has been a considerable history of debate around religion here in the past. Let's not go there again................ please!
Cachimbo (1181 D)
16 Nov 11 UTC
hahaha ! No worries Fulhamish, that was not my intention. You're in fact quite right: if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything. But the best way to make that happen, is to kill the cause of your desire to say something. And the "mute" function works wonders to that end!
fulhamish (4134 D)

I see your point Cach, it has much to commend it.

Obviously cheating accusations aren't, but I seem to recall hearing that we're allowed to discuss players banned for cheating openly, and I'm curious as to the story behind some of the recently-banned players... seems like some familiar names are out.
