Can anyone defend freedom?
Can anyone defend the idea that "people" can produce a better society by diminishing governmental control in exchange for increased libertarian imposition of civil freedoms on the government?

Are no-hitters not a big deal anymore?
When guys like Ervin Santana can get one and we've had something like 10 in the past 2 seasons are no hitters going to become passe?

Also, what the heck is La Russa's major malfunction?

Account sitting.
I'll be out of town for four or five days, and I'm not sure what to do. I'm pretty new to this site so I'm not sure how it works, but I've seen people mention 'account sitting'? How does that work? What are the rules? How do I find someone to do that for me? I guess I'm just looking for a general explanation. Thanks in advance. Oh, and sorry if this is explained elsewhere on the site. Perhaps I missed it when I looked.

How Much Is Everyone Muting?
I ask becuase I see folks saying they're muting folks in threads more and more...and it just seems like a shame and almost unfair to me, really...granted I'm probably one of the most-muted on the site--at least I would guess I am--but even so, all the more reason I just can't mute anyone..."if you can't stand the heat"...? You can't have it both ways, give a critical opinion and erect a shield to deflect all criticism, even if that "criticism" is a foolish troll, yes?

I muted you.
But seriously, 0 muted.

I mean, I haven't muted anyone yet...

Not even 1brucben or maple--oh, I could NEVER mute maple!--or TC or any of them...

They might annoy the hell out of me, and troll in my eyes, but I'm sure I annoy them as well...

And, again, it doesn't seem fair for me to be able to give it to them and not take any in return (if I chose to "give it to them," not that I want to or intend to do so here.)

I haven't muted anyone. I muted TC for a few minutes just to see how the feature works, but I now I just grit my teeth/LMAO at everything.

I find people muting really frustrating. As such I won't do it, unless I encounter a lot of PM spam or such crap.

The problem is I engage in a lot of political debate threads, and it seems pretty pointless when a lot of the arguments I'm breaking down are by people who either have me muted or act like they do.

"If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen" days are over. Now it is "if you can't stand the heat, turn on the airconditioning."
I thought it is more like "If you can't stand the heat, break the stove"

It's a great help in anon games. If there's a muted person you have that much more of an idea as to whom it may be...
Muting does not apply in an anon game. For example, if you muted TC, he would not be muted in an anon game.
Terwillager (100 D)

You mean I could be allying with him right now? Oh no!
Don't worry, I'm sure you'll know who he is when he starts bagging Obama about nationalised health insurance...
SacredDigits (102 D)

I only have TC muted, and not because I disagree with him, but because he's the only person I know with less substance per word than obi.
Draugnar (0 DX)

TC and Putin go on and off mute if I'm interested in threads they started. Krellin, mapleleaf, and this new 1bunchen or whatever his name is (oh and sicarius) are my only permanent mutes IIRC.
I'm still trying to find a way to mute myself...
spyman (424 D(G))

I don't mute. I don't want miss anything.
Even the 11 TC topics in a row?

I think that anyone utilizing the mute feature proves that they are an intolerant fucking baby.

Its the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming "I can't hear you, I can't hear you".

There's a better way...it's called IGNORE! And you don't even have to press a button.

I've got TC muted. Couldn't stand how angry is ignorance and belligerent replies made me.
Does it mean that I'm somewhat weak on that front? Maybe.
I think it mostly means that I come here to play, relax, and enjoy the conversation of some very bright people. If the threads were important to me in my life, I would not mute a soul. But given what my intentions are when I come here, I couldn't deal with TC anymore. And I know at least two other ones that are on the short list! Thankfully, those two have chosen silence instead of idiocy when their arguments proved invalid; that's why they still have a voice on my screen.

As a supporter of free speech I am against muting, however 1brucben pissed me off with all that stupid pointless threads last night, so I muted him.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Jul 11 UTC
@Fasces - mjuting has nothing to do with free speech. They are free to post whatever they want and, just like with the TV or the radio, I'm free to "turn them off" whenever I want. Freedom of speech does not imply an obligation in others to listen to it.

28 Jul 11 UTC
Oh, and Darwyn, if your skills are such that you can ignore what you see as blatant stupidity, even when it obviously makes you angry and you feel the need to reply, chances are that you are likely to be way too full of yourself: what, when people disagree with you, are they but slaves of ignorance that even the worst punishment and the best education will not save?

Looking for sitter
I'll be away for 5-6 days next week and still have a couple games running. It shouldn't be too huge of a time commitment if anyone is willing, since one is a 4 day phase world game in which I have only a single unit. The other is a game in the summer gunboat tournament, so someone not part of that would be preferred.
I hope I'm not asking too much with only a few days notice, but if someone with a good reputation would PM me saying they can, I would be extremely grateful.

Hysteria & Welfare State Bankruptcy
In the current budget debate you see two viewpoints-the House of Representatives realizes the Welfare State is bankrupt with $200 Trillion in deficits and unfunded liabilities. The Obama administration and the Senate think everything will be fine if they raise taxes and keep pumping devalued dollars into the economy.

gunboats are stupid and ruin diplomacy
the point of diplomacy is exactly what it says. DIPLOMACY. When we get rid of ingame messaging it does away with the crucial factor of diplomacy and results in no improvement of luck. It actually makes the game far more random and chancy than it should be. I believe that we need to get rid of this option to allow DIPLOMACY to take its course. Please add your comments about this.
