Yes, the story is real. People have been abusing this system for a while now.

It's gotten so bad that the mint is now limiting the amount of coins that you can buy to only $1000 every 10 days. The intention of this program was to promote the circulation of these coins, however people are abusing this program and coins are just being deposited banks in the original mint packaging.

This system is pure arbitrage. If you immediately deposit the coins and pay off your credit card bill, you don't pay any interest while gaining reward points basically for free since all you did was move money (that you only borrowed) around. Many reward programs offer at least a cash back option that equates to at least one percent. With a miles card, you can easily rack up enough points to be set for a long time.

In response to abgemacht's claim that it "helps the economy": I guess have to *partially* agree with this. While the US treasury is losing money both in shipping and handling costs and credit card transactions fees, they are effectively stimulating the economy by indirectly giving the people who are taking advantage of this system the benefits that they get from these reward programs. This adds some more cash to their pockets, which *may* lead to some increased spending. Also, free flights *might* promote tourism and hence additional spending. However, the biggest winners here are the credit card companies and the shipping companies (unless they are just using the US postal service). The credit card companies run these rewards programs since it makes them money. The transaction fees cover the cost of providing rewards will still earning them a healthy profit. So basically, this coin selling program can be viewed as a massive social/economic program, where the government is effectively giving money to: 1) the credit card companies, 2) the shipping companies, 3) the people who are willing to exploit this program for personal gain.
