Am I the only one in looking forward with eager anticipation to an Icelandic default on their loans? After Iceland then maybe Portugal, Greece, Ireland etc....That should wipe the smile off a few self-satisfied faces! In fact if I were them I would act in concert and to hell with the 'credit rating agencies'.

I've made a few changes to the tournaments.webdiplomacy.net site, including adding pages for FAQs, a Glossary and external links. The idea is that if something turns up like this, it can be added to these pages, and so newcomers (if they find the site) will be able to find out things much more easily. PLEASE help me to make these worthwhile by submitting content in this thread

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: What (Book) Brings You Here?
We all have so many discussions and bring so many different perspectives to said discussions that this time I wanted to ask...what book or books do YOU hold most dear, that you feel you can look to in a time of need and find meaning and say "Yes...yes, that's what I believe, and I can persevere!" Are these religious texts? Philosophical texts? Knowing some of you...perhaps mathematical texts that'd make my head spin? ;)

Buying a Laptop

I'll be buying a loptop shortly, a high-end one, that I'll be taking with me to college, I'll therefore be using it for college work, as well as gaming. I will not however need a high-end laptop for my major (no engineering or 3 D modelling), I merely want the high-end aspects for gaming, and I'm also sick of using slow bottom performance machines as I've been doing for years.

That said, I was initially going to buy the Alienware m15x. after doing some more research however, I found significantly recurring problems with the motherboards and build quality, as well as customer service and tech support. Even the possibility of a defective motherboard is essentially a deal breaker, especially if I can't count on customer support to solve the problem.

Now to the meat of this post. After some more research into sellers and manufacturers, I've settled (I think) on Malibal, which sell only customized laptops, the chassis are Clevo, and the parts are Intel and Nvidia for the most part. Have any of you had experience with the company? The only reviews I've found for the company and there products, are essentially all good, even the bad ones admit the problem was from the buyers side. A lack of any negative reviews seems a little suspicious to me, but I think it is primarily due to lack of marketshare.

Also, 17 inch or 15 inch? The specs are the same, and the price difference is 80 dollars more for the 17 inch one. I really can;t decide.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

15 inch. if you will ever take it anywhere, you'll thank me.

if you get a 17 inch, you'll likely never take it anywhere even if you originally wanted to.

go with the lightest smallest design you can find that still meets your minimum reqs

Horizontal space is nothing. Most websites or applications don't use more than 2/3's of the horizontal space. I put my taskbar on the left for precisely this reason. Vertical space is what matters, not horizontal space.

also its just really not that big of a deal at all when you compare it to the ease of transport.

my rule of thumb: if it is too heavy to pick up with one hand, then you should either go smaller or get a desktop
Puddle (413 D)

How serious of a gamer are you? Do you want to play flash games, or Crysis?

My advice is this:

Buy (or better yet, build) a gaming desktop. The reality is you can't game on a laptop and for the same price, you'll get a computer that's 2-4x better.

Then, buy yourself a smaller, cheaper laptop to carry around with you on campus. Trust me, you do *not* want to carry a 17" 8lb laptop with you. You're going to want something like 12" 3lb.

If you want to go the laptop approach, what you're looking for is a Lenovo. Simply put, they are the finest PC laptops money can buy.

I have a lot of experience with laptops, building PCs and gaming, so if you have any questions, I'm happy to help more.

a high end gaming computer and a portable work (either school or business) laptop are two completely different applications with completely different requirements. you're going to end up with a very expensive computer if you really want to satisfy both requirements with one computer.

if you plan on doing long writing assignments or software development without an external keyboard, read reviews on usability and if possible, try the computer out. my two cents here are that mac and thinkpad (now lenovo, used to be ibm) are miles ahead of the competition in terms of usability. don't get a dell.

i like thucy's rule of thumb. i never understood the attraction to these super-heavy "laptops" ... seems like you've compromised away the whole point of getting a laptop.

Alright Abge,

Gaming wise, we're looking at the Total War series, which can get pretty taxing, elder scrolls, and some mmo, as well as some serious multitasking in the nature of large file downloads and uploads, music playing, and gaming or browser simultaneously.

While a desktop is obviously the prime choice, the simple fact of the matter is that there is no way I can sell two computers to my technophobic mother, who will controll how much parental aid I can get for this. While I can pay for the entire setup myself, its not ideal. My father however is willing to undersell the capabilities and usage of a laptop to her in order to help me out her.

Gaming of this nature is certainly doable on one of these platforms, I'd check out there website, the computers are pretty impressive, my build would be the Lotus 150 with the following

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM, 6MB L3 Cache, 2.2-3.3GHz
Memory: (8GB) 8192MB, PC3-10660/1333MHz DDR3 - 2 SO-DIMM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5
Hard Drive: 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA 300
Optical Bay: 8X Multi DVD+/-R/RW RAM Dual-Layer Drive

Along with a 3 year labor and 2 year parts warranty, and the norm (webcam, ports, and such). The big thing here is the literally outstanding customer service reviews they've recieved.
Puddle (413 D)

Honestly, the weight of the computer, as long as its under 10 pounds does not concern me, it will be in my swissgear back pack, and an extra ten pounds really wont even be felt. I'm used to much heavier loads from ROTC, hiking, camping, and school. The usual wieght for school is around 20 pounds, and for the rest closer to 50 or 60 pounds. So weight isnt a real concern here.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Apr 11 UTC
Normally, I would argue that weight *is* a concern; however, by your activities you seem to know what you're talking about, so I'll let that drop.

I agree that you can find a laptop that will do what you want. My point is, it will easily by 2-3x as expensive as an equivalent desktop. Desktops also have significantly longer life expectancies because you can replace parts, which, for the most part, can't be done on laptops.

I'll take a look at that brand and let you know what I think.
Puddle (413 D)
07 Apr 11 UTC
Alright. Thanks Abge. I will be getting a desktop eventually, probably in a few years. But I rather doubt that I can get one for a third the price with the same components, this one will come out to about 1900 dollars, and the portability is definitely worth a few hundred dollars to me, as I already set aside 2400 dollars for a computer.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Apr 11 UTC
Well, I can tell you that I can easily make a desktop better than that one (including a nice monitor) for under $1500.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

people, when they hear weight, think of weight in your bag. it's not so much that as it is weight in your hand, or on your lap.

it's nice to be able to easy pick your laptop and move a few feet with it, or hold it in one hand while you type... etc. moving from your bed to your desk to the kitchen table.. these are things people take for granted, and having a big-ass laptop ends up making those moves much more of a bitch.

also, since you are so serious about gaming etc, i think probably just getting a separate gaming comp is a good idea. not saying whether it needs to be laptop or desktop but... its true that having a gaming laptop probably means it wont make a very good everything-else laptop.

15" macbook pro has not let me down once. and it, i might add, has never crashed. i'm only ever forced to reboot it for applications to take effect. so there's that. and typing on it is a breeze, etc.

not to mention you *can* game on it, there are just less options. i understand if you're a hardcore gamer and you're like hell no not a mac!! but many of my friends are gamers and programmers and use macs too... just because honestly macbooks are superior laptops. i think anyone who has used one can attest.

I second what Abgemacht is saying.
Puddle (413 D)
07 Apr 11 UTC
Hmm, I'll have to reevaluate that then Abge, but I think the parental factor will leave my hands somewhat tied to one computer here.

@Thuc. I refuse to buy mac due to some personal customer service fiascos with them. Also two friends of mine with the most recent version of macbooks (I think, purchased in the last year) have had so many crashes and failures that they have had to buy netbooks for any sort of work they have to do. So... I won't be buying any apple products, but I certainly understand their appeal and success.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
07 Apr 11 UTC
Yeah, my roommate at school is a big computer gamer and he built his own desktop and then bought a netbook for portability. In fact, its more common on campus than most people (likely your parents) think.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Apr 11 UTC
Well, how much of your own money were you planning on spending?

Because for about $500, you can buy a beautiful portable Lenovo Thinkpad. Which means, for about the same price as you planned on spending for 1 laptop, you could have a laptop+a much better desktop.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
07 Apr 11 UTC
i would just hate to type on a netbook, personally. lol.

Agreed 100%. But, I'm not suggesting a netbook, I'm suggesting this:

Honestly, if this is for next fall, you should wait to see what AMD does with Llano.
I agree on the 15 inch, but I never recommend gaming from a laptop. Unless you need gaming portability, look at getting a lower-end laptop (ie a first gen i3 or i5) and build a nice gaming desktop.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Apr 11 UTC
Yeah, Geofram makes a good point. You should always wait until the last minute to buy a computer because technology changes so quickly. Although, on the other hand, if this is your first year at college, it'd probably be better if you got this settled over the summer so that you don't have to be bothered by it your first couple weeks at school.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Apr 11 UTC
And, honestly, 15" is still too big in my honest opinion. I had a T60p freshman/sophomore year and it was just too big. Since then I switched to the x61t and now I have the x201t, both of which I could/can easily hold in one hand while typing with the other. It's also great for carrying in my hand around buildings, as I always leave my bag in the lab.

And, btw, the T60p, which is now 5 years old, is still going strong. In fact, my mother dropped it down a flight of steps, while running and open, and nothing happened to it at all. The x61t, which I sold to my roommate, is now 3 years old and hasn't had any problems.
Geofram (130 D(B))
07 Apr 11 UTC
You can't go lower than 15" for a gaming laptop unless you're willing to pay a premium. Most manufacturers aren't interested in fitting a quality dedicated GPU in a smaller machine. I agree with you though, I'd never own a laptop bigger than 13.3, as I think its the perfect laptop size. The Toshiba R835 is the best laptop I've ever used, and I see a lot of laptops over the course of a year.

This is a bad time to buy a laptop. Everything you can buy now will be on sale in August. You really really want to wait.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Apr 11 UTC
@Geofram

I agree, but as you see, I'm very against gaming-laptops.
Geofram (130 D(B))
07 Apr 11 UTC
That being said, make a list of laptops you'd be happy having. And I mean go to the store or to a friend or buy & return, use them for a bit, do not just look at specs.

Once you have that list, check bensbargains.net every day. You'll never find a better deal than his site.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Apr 11 UTC
And along those lines, just because a laptop has great specs, doesn't mean it won't set your pants on fire when you use it!
Geofram (130 D(B))
07 Apr 11 UTC
Exactly. I hate gaming laptops too. In fact, as a heavy gamer, I refuse to install games on my laptop because it kills my productivity. Plus gaming on a laptop just isn't the same.

But for college students, often a gaming laptop is the only choice. If you must go gaming laptop, my advice above and the advice of others is all still relevant, but the biggest thing you can do is wait. Patience and diligent sale checking is by far the easiest way to get a good deal. I've spent the past three months building a complete desktop system. In total the parts would have cost me close to four grand, but because I was patient, made a lot of phone calls, and combined a lot of deals, I brought it down to just two!
Draugnar (0 DX)

I use a laptop for gaming, but I hook it in to a 32" HD monitor and programmable gaming keyboard, keypad, and mouse so it is just the processor, hard drive, memory, and video I even use a USB headset with it, so it isn't using the internal soundcard either.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Apr 11 UTC
@Geo

Yup. Although, I did earn some serious gaming cred when I went to a lan party and, having forgotten my mouse, proceed to whip everyone's ass with just the nipple in BF1942.

@Draug

What do you play besides WOW, which is neither CPU/GPU intensive. Have you played Total War? Sometimes I feel like it should be running on the lab's supercomputer.
Draugnar (0 DX)
07 Apr 11 UTC
And I should note, it's a Dell E6400 crammed with 8 gig RAM and hooked into my home network so that I have a full gigabit connection direct to my internet when I'm gaming, not just the 54 megabit wireless G that I use generally around the house. That way I keep most of the gaming files on the server along with my development project files.
