The game Hello my Brothers 3
It was clear from the first year that 3- 5 players were working together. That ruins the live games. Russia, England, and France made moves no one would make in a game with unknowns.

Pre-Pause for US Storm?
So pretty much the whole northern US is getting whacked by a storm, and I know I'm not the only person who might be without power for a good long time. Perhaps those of us in the path should vote pause, with the understanding that the other players should also pause if we vanish for a couple of days.

Leisurely Playing the Game of Diplomacy
Perhaps it's just me, but do some people take this game way too seriously? Here I am, playing Diplomacy for fun, countlessly running into people, other players, that I can't help but to assume have a dictionary nearby whenever they play the game. Intimidation via vernacular, if you will. And to be honest, I find this concept incredibly humorous. Anybody else?

Pick up Italy in a locked 24 hr low-stakes WTA game?
gameID=46247

Italy is at 7 SCs but about to hit 5. The players in the game have been very dependable -- no other NMRs up to 1905. A good bet for a decent player who enjoys negotiation. The password is playfair.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: "Will you be kind enough to justify your existence?"
The above quote is from my SECOND-favorite playwright of all-time (we ALL know who my favorite is) Mr. George Bernard Shaw, who was staunchly of the opinion that life SHOULD have a purpose, and that if it didn't...well, he didn't look kindly on that, but let's focus on the positive--IS there such a thing as "purpose/justifying your existence?" Is it granted naturally, or obtained? Can it be lost? WHAT IS IT? And if there IS no justification for existence...what THEN?

Anonymous games are evil - discuss
I consider FTF Diplomacy to be the purest. When playing FTF, you often know who are the players you are playing against, you know their history and how they play. This allows a more intricate diplomacy. By playing anonymous games on WebDiplomacy, we ignore the most fundamental side of FTF Diplomacy - history.

PPSC v WTA: A top 100 GR player fails to understand the controversy around 17 17 games
As so eloquently stated in a post yesterday, "PPSC is NOT a gentleman's game. PPSC isn't anything good."

Please elaborate. I promise a good faith attempt to try to understand why PPSC games are inherently evil.

In memory of charlesf
charlesf appeared on the webdip scene on December 10th of 2010. He had one bad game experience so came to the forum to both talk about how this site could be better and to get a better quality game going.

He was last seen on January 10th of 2011 when he had the audacity to leave his country in Civil Disorder in that game.

Diplomacy: Best approach?
I'd just like to discuss about how to approach in compromise and resolve through diplomacy. I'd like to know your guys opinions about what you think is the best form of diplomacy.

I'd also like to ask your guys opinions about what basis you guys form when creating an alliance. As in, do you guys form rules to be kept when you guys make an alliance?

Holy crap, what a friggin' nightmare!!

Before heading off to WACcon, I skimmed through Edi Birsan's document about playing in your first face-to-face tournament. The main thing I got out of that was that since the games are shorter, to fit more games in a short time period, players tend to be a bit more aggressive early on, so they have a shot at a likely draw. According to Edi, the two countries this affects the most is Austria and Italy, resulting in Italy stabbing Austria much more often than on a site such as webdip.

So, to draw countries, an army of each was placed in a hat and we each got to pick one out. As I nervously reached my hand up and into the hat, I repeated to myself, "Anything but Austria. Anything but Austria." If it can work for Harry Potter, why not me, right? WRONG!!!! I drew Austria. Uh oh.

The next thing I know, the discussion focused on the time clock. One guy was adamant that in the pregame we get 30 minutes and then 15 minutes after that, according to the rules. This guy said he wanted 20 minutes before fall 1901, and that he'd go with 20 in the pregame only if he got 20 for fall, if he couldn't get 20 for fall, he'd make us take 30 for pregame because those are the rules. This guy was insanely intense about this, as if his entire self worth as a person hinged on this one tournament, he was out for blood. Everyone was happy to give in to his demands, except I had said nothing, so one of the directors of the tourney asked me if it was okay with me. I couldn't care less, since I didn't know any better, so yeah, whatever, my hopes were set on merely having a little fun.

Now that that was settled, time to start negotiations! First we wrote down who was playing each country. I wondered who'd be Italy, who'd have control of my destiny in this game... Hmmm... You guessed it, Mr. Time Clock himself. Son of a bitch!

So, I'm a pretty low key guy and happy to blend into the background a bit, and just wait for other people to ask to talk to whoever and see who's left to want to talk. (This is the first reason I win the award for Dumbass of the Tournament!) Anyway, Russia wants to talk to me first. Great! We chat about possibly working together, we talk about Galicia and both think that a DMZ will work but that we should check back after talking with others. So far so good!

I then talk to Italy. Holy shit. "This guy... this is not my kind of guy!" (hope you read that with Frank Costanza's voice in your head) Italy immediately asks me where he is going to get his second build in 1901. If I didn't know better I'd think Babak had actually made the trip and changed his name to disguise himself! ;-) SOOO, I've got an Italian that is very loud, arrogant and only thinks about himself. I'm a team player, I trust early and use teamwork as my main weapon. I'm starting to get a pit in my stomach, especially when Italy starts pressing for Greece in 1901, I try to make my case that I will need Greece since I'll be at the heart of the action while Italy will be safe for a bit. Reason #2 I win Dumbass of the Tournament Award.

SOOO, Italy has got me pretty nervous, time is ticking away, so we break off and agree to touch base in a minute.

I chat with Turkey briefly, seems friendly, we agree we could have potential one day but we'll see how things go. Clearly he's out to get me, shit! Germany is pretty mello, I like him, at least that's something, though I kind of expect Germany to be peaceful to Austria. Hmmm...

I go back to Russia, tell Russia I am nervous about Italy coming after me and that I'd like a bounce in Galicia for a little peace of mind. Reasonable? DUMBASS!!!! Get this. Russia tells me that if I attack Galicia, that is an act of war on Russia. Russia tells me that since he knows this is my first F2F game, he knows my tendency will be to play conservatively, so if I don't help him attack Munich in fall 1901, if I don't play aggressively, he's going to turn the entire board against me (since he knows a few of the others on the board) and have me eliminated immediately. WTF?!?! Face-to-face... Face-to-face is not my kind of game!! (Yep, that's Frank again)

At this point my head is swimming, what the hell?!?! If I give into Russia's demands, that sets a horrible precedent, plus the last thing I want to do with a Wild Italy is go attack Germany. I pretty much have no choice but to tell Russia I'm sticking with a bounce in Galicia, unfortunately, 'cause I'm a total dumbass. Russia’s response: “Sorry, Mark.”

So, I go back to Italy. Italy assures me he's moving an army to Apulia to convoy to Tunis, yadda yadda yadda, we're all good...

So, times about up. I know I'm in trouble, the Russian is going around talking to everyone, to kill me off. I feel I must bounce in Gal, and I'm going to need units, so I decide to trust the loudmouth Italian and go for Greece. You got it: Dumbass.

So, in spring 1901, Italy takes Ven to Trieste and Rome to Ven. Russia does NOT bounce me in Galicia, allows me into Galicia, son of a beee-ahhh-ch! Russia takes Sev to Rum, Turkey slides his fleet to Con and army to Bul (looks like a Jugg). I'm floating down shit creek and I don't have a boat, much less paddles. Dumbass.

So, I talk to Germany, tell him how Russia wanted Munich in fall 1901, hope he'll help me, but he says little, doesn't seemed concerned. Hmmm. I talk to Turkey, try to insure he'll allow me to take Greece, since Italy stabbed me. Turkey assured me he would let me into Greece. Italy is... being his usual charming self, unconcerned with a possible Jugg, telling me I should have offered him Greece. SOOO, not sure what else to do other than use Serb to support my Alb fleet to Greece and hope Gal can guess which center to bounce Trieste out of (Vie or Bud). Times up, here comes the moment of truth...

So, Trieste does not attack Vie or Bud, so I slide in and Russia takes Galicia. Not ideal, I hoped to bounce Italy and keep Russia out of Gal. The Italian fleet attacks Greece. Hmmm. Trieste attacks Serb, cutting my support, so Italy has bounce me out of Greece. Bastard! Couldn't have gone too much worse... until Turkey's army in Bul supports Trieste to Serbia while Italy’s army in Ven slides into Trieste. Never in my life have I seen an Austria lose a unit in 1901, until this game. Dumbass of the Tournament, I've sealed it up less than an hour into the first game. Well, at least I’ll get a good night’s sleep and be ready for the morning game? Pathetic dumbass…

I was eliminated in 1903. It was quick, relatively painless, and actually there was one silver lining. In fall 1901, Germany took an army towards Russia. I took what few units I had at Russia, and even though Russia got a build in 1901, getting Russia up to 5 units in 1901, the Russian was also eliminated in 1903, which was relatively satisfying, mainly because it was the only positive I could take from my first real F2F game. I really hoped for better on day two… but alas, is was not to be… though that’s a story for another day, I’m depressed enough for now…

Wow

I can tell you that is not what Webdip F2F will be like!

I had my first f2f experience last year. The people were much nicer to me. However, one of them did end up throwing a game to my ally because he had "issues" with someone else on the board.

Those f2f people...

Hey don't hate - I'm an ftf convert and am blessed with an enormous and diverse group of 60-70 in the area who play on a regular basis. In tournaments things get kind of dirty, but in weekend games it's a lot more friendly and the game transcends anything I've seen on here.

I too went to WACcon this weekend... some grim moments, but all-in-all a pretty good experience for me. There's definitely a barrier to entry for a new player- especially an out-of-towner and I think it takes a while to build up a reputation that allows you to go further in the tourney.

In my first game, I too had the misfortune of drawing Austria. R and T were both regulars from the Portland/Seattle area and were solid players. Italy was an older gent and turned out to be a very loyal ally (thankfully!). E and F were new and G was an average player from the area. Anyway, I tried my best to get an anti-Turkish alliance with R. I explained to each player that I was an experienced web-player, but I don't think this counted for much- a ftf reputation is built through ftf play it seems. Anyway, R and T pretended to be hostile. R sent his fleet to Rum and T build a fleet in Ankara. I believe that this was in the hopes of splitting Italy and me up, but it failed and ultimately and I took advantage of the mis-positioning that these feints created. This was by far my best played game of the tourney. Italy headed west, making very slow progress. At a few critical junctures, he did have a fleet to help me against the Turk . Russia hit Germany with some success, but soon gave up the southern ruse- going juggernaut on me. Fortunately, I was able to out fight R-T and took Bul and Rum. Ultimately, I was able to wear R's patience down and gain his respect. He finally hit T which quickly brought the game to a conclusion. We were the last game to finish that night (7:00-1:00). The game ended in a 3-way draw with R-A-E.

Will write about game 2 :) and 3 :( later.

Barn3tt - what happened to the old italian? bumped off by England?
Barn3tt (41969 D)
24 Jan 11 UTC
Well, at any time a player can propose a draw vote with only certain countries included. A tournament director runs this process which is supposed to be unanimous. Anyway, an A, E, R draw was proposed and passed. Later after the board was cleaned up the Italian said he had voted against it, but it was too late. I was sort of relieved to have ended the game that way as I really didn't want to have to hit him. The results wouldn't have changed.
Barn3tt (41969 D)

Players vote by placing an army piece (yea) or a navy piece (nay) into a hat so only the tourney director would know what each player voted for.

Anyway, just to round off my experience at WACcon.

Game 2: This was a game that MadMarx and I were both in together (though we didn't know we were both webdippers at the time). I think that MadMarx has the better story to tell in this one- he was Russia and during one season all 6 players on the board in some way harmed him-yes- even France! I pulled Italy and ended up working with Turkey who was a new player that was in my previous game (England). Initially, I had hoped to work with Russia/MadMarx to take out Turkey and then Austria together. However, a fleet build in Mar and some bad vibes from Austria plus a anti-Russia open from the Turk convinced me against going Lepanto and to stab Austria instead (which turned out pretty well for me :) ). I picked up Greece and Trieste in 02. At that point, I considered turning on the Turk and helping Russia stay in the game, but some odd Germany army movements (Boh) and the Turks continued generosity convinced me otherwise (I picked up Vie and the Turk gave me Serb in 03). Anyway, long story short, the Turk and I tried to either get England to 3-way with us or break through the stalemate line for a 2-way. We were thwarted and England wouldn't play ball with us so we ended up in a 4-way (E-G-I-T) where I topped the board at 10 centers.

My 3rd game went very poorly. I was placed in a stacked table with some really experienced ftf-ers. One was a national champ, another was a world champ and the rest were also very experienced and knew each other very well- I was the random stranger in the group. Pulled Russia- which I believe is the worst country to pull in a ftf game where you're walking in as an unknown. Couldn't get anyone to deal with me no matter how generous my offer. Ended up getting zero builds and was eliminated rather speedily.

Okay, day two, time for a fresh start, time to forget all about that crappy first game and have a little fun!!

I head down to our room at the pub a few minutes early, there are already about 20 people sitting around chatting. I grabbed an open chair with a smile on my face, full of ignorant anticipation... will I never learn?!?!

Two minutes after sitting down, Time Clock Italy's voice starts booming above everyone else's as it is now time for him to tell everyone in the room, in great detail, how he kicked ass the night before. Every minute detail of every thought that past through that obviously gigantic brain of his had to be fully disected from every angle to insure each and every person in that room had as full of an understanding of his brilliance as possible. I felt about 2" tall.

So, the players at each table get called out and I'm playing with six completely new people, none from my game the night before, what a relief! Then we were told that if we draw the country we played last night, to put that piece back in the hat and draw again, things are looking up! As I reached into the hat this time, the only thing I was thinking was that I'd really prefer to not get Russia, since I'm pretty crappy at that country. Hell, I was even open to Italy, after how things went the night before! I opened my hand with a dazzling white army looking back at me with a taunting grin I would soon learn to despise. Russia. Well, still better than Austria, ignorantly I continued to think to myself, I can do this, I'm Keith Hernandez! ;-) (Has anyone here seen Seinfeld?!)

I don't remember who I talked to first, but as usual, I sit back and let others talk to whoever first and just sit back. Stupid, but that's my personality, so I just go with it, how badly can I do after the night before, right? Dumbass.

When I talk to Germany about Sweden, he says he'll give it to me for sure if I open to the north to help with England, but that even if I open south he may give it to me. England and I didn't say too much, but were friendly. I talked to France about maybe one day squishing England and Germany, that we were natural allies in the north, but he didn't say much since this was his second game ever and didn't really know what he was doing yet. Turkey was open to cooperating early, we talked about a DMZ in Black Sea, which I don't think I've ever done before on webdip, but the night before that worked for R/T in 1901, so I figured what the hell, especially since I had BIG plans to crush Austria just like what happened the night before! Italy (Barn3tt) seemed pretty open to an I/R, so I was getting decent vibes from everyone really (not too surprisingly), so when Austria wanted a DMZ in Galicia, I figured it was perfect timing to take Galicia and open south, got to be aggressive, right?

So, Italy/Barn3tt didn't immediately stab Austria, which was fine, though I was wishing he had played Italy the night before. This Turkey, of course, attacked Black Sea and moved to Arm, not ideal. Austria was reading orders, since he's alphabetically first, so when he read that I attacked Galicia he went on a bit about how I lied and yadda yadda yadda don't anyone in this game trust such an ass (I'm paraphrasing a bit). E/F/G did pretty standard stuff, France went to Bur, Munich to Ruhr, England conservatively opened to the north to guarantee.

Okay, time to try to talk Turkey down. Turkey claims he changed everything up at the last minute because Italy told him to. This was also one of Turkey's first games, but he actually had a decent understanding of the game somehow, he finished 3rd place in the tourney when all was said and done, pretty impressive! Anyway, Turkey wanted Rum or Sev so he could break out of his corner. UGHH, that is just sooo not cool, right?! I told him that, more or less, but told him we should talk to others and meet back up to chat. When I talked to Italy/Barn3tt, I immediately told him that Turkey blamed his opening on Italy, something Italy immediately denied. Didn't matter too much, but I wanted to see how Italy responded to the accusation, which he blew off very cooly and still came off like he wanted to work with me. Austria obviously wasn't happy with me, but we chatted and Austria said if I vacated Galicia we could work through it. Germany promised me Sweden, after the Turkey stab, and I didn't say too much to England (OOPS!!) or France. I went back to Turkey, decided I should not freak out and oppose him like I did Russia the night before, that I'd actually give in to his demands, so I suggested Black Sea convoy Arm to Rum, which Turkey thought was a cool idea, and Turkey promised to give me Rum as soon as he could take Serb. My read was that he would actually do it, so I had the option of just using Ukraine to support hold at Rum and keep Sev, to actually get two builds. BUT, I decided to take a stab at one of Austria's home centers (he had an army in Bud, so I figured he'd take Bud to Vie, so I'd attack Bud) and I wanted Ukraine to follow into Galicia in case I guessed right, that was the aggressive thing to do and would pay off big time if it worked, especially since a two build Turkey would get Italy's attention and we could then get our I/R off and running, so I let Turkey take Rum. Yes, this would work!

So, Turkey did as we agreed. Turns out Austria trusted me and didn't bother to cover Vie, he stayed in Bud, I over-thought that one... crap! Austria is really pissed at me now. Germany did let me into Sweden, I had counted on that, but England shifted to Barents while France slid into Munich (to secure three builds, nice job rookie!) while Germany took Belgium for two builds (along with Hol and Den, while losing Munich).

Okay, I got a build, but I have English problems up north and an angry Austrian, but Turkey is happy with me and Italy is on my side long term... Okay, this is far too much detail, time to hurry up!

1902 saw England come after me, but I guessed right and kept Sweden, since Germany didn't help too effectively (fall '02 saw Germany support Norway to Sweden while Barents supported North Sea to Norway, but I had StP support Swe to Norway for a bounce). The southeast was a total mess, everyone was trying to attack each other but we all exchanged centers in the spring, I got into Bud while Austria got into Gal, Italy stabbed Austria, Turkey was following through with taking Serb and giving me Rum back, except I didn't figure it would come so soon so Rum was actually vacant (Austria retreated their though, damn!) at the time (I think, the southeast was all mixed up, I don't remember all of the details exactly though). BUT, my ultimate downfall was due to the play, of all people, France. When France was kicked out of Munich in spring 1902, instead of retreating back towards home, he went to Silisia. Actually, in spring 1902, and for the next few years, France typically failed to write orders for even half of his units. France would write one or two things down, though he had six units after 1901, BUT, one of the few orders he did write down was supporting Austria's Gal unit into Warsaw in fall 1902, even after I had a nice chat with him about not doing so. This one hurt the most. If I had bounced Austria out of War, I would have been able to build an army in War, to go along with the army in Mos, and I would have still been an attractive ally to Italy. As it happened, without Mos, Austria retreated another unit to Ukraine, so was in position to take Mos the next year, and I was totally screwed. Actually, I mis-remember some of that, at least the timing of it all, because in 1902 I got a build and was at 6 units, but in spring 1903 I got my army in Budapest destroyed and by fall 1903 I was down to ONE unit as England and Germany finally got on track to take Sweden and StP, Austria took War, Turkey had stabbed me (with the help of Italy/Barn3tt) to get Bud and whatever else I had, I don't know, but going from six units in 1902 down to one in 1903 was clearly another brilliant performance by yours truly. Please hold your applause, there's one more game to go.
OK, for your last game, Marx... TALK TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN RIGHT OFF THE BAT.

I'll grant you that I'm no veteran to the face-to-face hobby, but I've noticed on webDiplomacy, in f2f, and in real life, a lot of people will take the first offer they get (or if not ignore the other offers out right, will look at all subsequent offers under the microscope of the first offer). I know you say it's not part of your personality to do so, and you don't have to be aggressive, but if you think about your own decision-making you'll notice how effective being the first one to negotiate with someone is.

Can't hurt, right? Good luck in the next round! ^_^

Why can’t I surrender?
My proposal: let players vote for resignation, and if everyone agrees, the game ends.
