Interested in a 48-hr Anon 101 pt game?
I'd love to get together some good players and start a couple games along with the new year. Seems like a good time to start playing dip again!

Teamwork versus Selfishness (AKA Draw versus Go for the Win)
This game has really gotten me frustrated recently. It was really fun when all my games ended in a draw. Playing cut-throat to win has been a lot less fun for me. Maybe I need a break.

Confused about the game search results
When I do a search for joinable games, I find a number of games with the lock icon, a password box filled in with bullet points and a join button.
The help text for the lock icon says that it is a private game and I need to know a password. Why is the password box already filled in as though I had already entered a password? Why does the join button look active, as though if I pressed it it would work? Would it?

great article, not about how to respond to climate change. "most of the general public appears to believe that the existence of abrupt climate change is a question of politics rather than science." - worth a quick read.

No offense to the makers here and on fb, but this isnt a real dip site.

Diplomacy is played "to win, or failing that to draw." (dip rule book)

This whole ppsc garbage destroys not only the game itself, but it teaches players who are new to the game that its the points that are important, not the game outcome(win/draw/loss).

Does anyone know a site that doesnt use points, or doesnt have ppsc games?

high level games on this site.
It is true, PPSC leads to some 'different' play, although I suspect it also does a very good job at keeping people in the game past their first defeat. Would be much better if we switched to a deposit system but still.

Just play WTA games, you'll find they're very good
spyman (424 D(G))

If you are looking for a different experience try www.playdiplomacy.com. Personally I prefer it here, but each to their own.
It's been said a few times already, but I'll join the chorus. You don't have to play PPSC, this site also has WTA.
Btw Kestas created this site. Chris set up the facebook version of Kestas's original phpdiplomacy, but apart from that facebook diplomacy has nothing to do with this site. There are quite a few versions of this site out there based on Kestas code such as olidip (which is dedicated to variants).

I almos exclusively play WTA, but is segregation the answer? You can easily start your own site based on this one's code but only allow WTA.... (and remove the hall of fame, replacing it with some win/lose/draw statistics - though everyone here who's in-the-know values GR over D points)

- this is a true dip variant site. The variant we play has a number of differences from the board game. The main one being the boardgame is played Face-to-Face...
lolwtf?

play WTA

this is a real Diplomacy site
Dharmaton (2398 D)
29 Dec 10 UTC
why not put the WTA as the standard & the ppsc as a var. ?
What does it matter if you do or not? The option to switch it to WTA is easily located when you start any game and takes all of 2 seconds to click.

Honestly, the notion that this isn't a real Diplomacy site because WTA isn't the default option -- let ALONE the notion of leaving because it takes a whole two seconds to switch the game setting from PPSC to WTA -- is absurd.
spyman (424 D(G))
29 Dec 10 UTC
Kestas thought PPSC might be easier for players who are completely new to the game. I think that might be why it is the default setting.

New players could change the setting to ppsc but wta is the real nature of the game and that's what they should try to get used to so it should be default.
spyman (424 D(G))
29 Dec 10 UTC
Messing around with settings is probably easier once you are used to the site. But whichever. Doesn't bother me. I have not played PPSC in over a year. I wouldn't rule it out though. I might, just for a change. WTA does lead to a lot draws.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

'What does it matter if you do or not? The option to switch it to WTA is easily located when you start any game and takes all of 2 seconds to click.'

because in the absence of knowing which is better people choose to accept the default (or let the site choose for them) and as was pointed out above NEW players are learning wrong!
Avenor (287 D)
29 Dec 10 UTC
And maybe that's a good thing. It results in only more experienced players wanting to play WTA.
And I speak from experience, I'm a newbie and, perhaps therefore, avoid WTA.
Maybe it is good for you that PPSC is the default.
spyman (424 D(G))
29 Dec 10 UTC
I do agree that WTA should be the default setting. It be a small change but a good one.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

"And maybe that's a good thing. It results in only more experienced players wanting to play WTA. "

not if new players learn to paly for a second place, and 'old' players despise them for letting people solo when a draw could have been achieved... (which is what this is all about)

They learn a different game and play it to their hearts content. The forums are littered with threads about people looking for 'real' matches, better opponents, and such... but i think this is a conversation worth having... otherwise you abandon this site and the PPSCers take over.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

lmao if this isnt a real diplo site then i dont know what is.

edi birsan was on here, dog.
ok, the reason why ppsc is default to my understanding, is because they dont want noobs going cd the moment they think they're going to lose. the current system encourages players to fight for every last supply centre they can get their hands on. it also allows other players to 'buy in' to existing games as someone previously cd and improve their number of supply centres to gain points.

the problem with wta is that although it does encourage people to "play to win" and not just get as many centres as possible at the end of the game, it offers no incentives to stay in the game when they are getting smashed. More experienced players may have a "code of honour" to never quit.

in short, its to try and stop civil disorder. how effective it is, i dont know. but 1 problem i see is that most noobies only have 100 D, therefore no incentive to cling onto that last sc.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
30 Dec 10 UTC
'code of honour? nothing of the sort.

if you're getting smashed you can always fight for a draw (and split evenly the pot with the leading players) of course this can lead to players trying to eliminate each other just to reduce the size of the draw, but that just a draw-back of WTA...
butterhead (90 D)
30 Dec 10 UTC
why not just change it around a little so that they HAVE to select a type... A.K.A, no default... and have clear explanations of the 2 options, and let them choose.... If they want to play ppsc, than so be it, If they want to play like experienced players, they could play WTA... IDK maybe my idea is stupid, but Its better than arguing over which should be default... and you shouldnt say players are learning "wrong" I learned off of PPSC, and Im not the best player of course, nowhere close, but I can play fairly well, and hold my own, and some of us play till the last center even in WTA, we dont quit... I'd say they are learning at a disadvantage to others...

Ranks
How is this possible? This morning my rank was "Member" I had som 150 or more points, and one "won" less, everything else was the same. Now i look at myself, because i have won 1 game and have joined another, and my rank has came down to political puppet again.
The rank is based in the points, or in the won, draw, lost, etc stactics?
