Dr. Hackenbush or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Look On The Bright Side of Life
I love philosophy/literature, sports, Trek, and comedy, and as I've already done threads on two (three) two of my three favorite things (four favorite things) four favorite things, it's time to do the third thing (fourth thing) foruth thing and pay homage to The Top Comedies Of All-Time! (So, nominate away (3 per person and has to be an original film, ie, no Shakespeare or Greek comedies) and when we get enough, say, 20 (or 42?) we'll vote for the Best Comedy Film Ever!

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Does it qualify? Some great films (comedy or otherwise) have original source material other than an original screenplay.

Blazing Saddles may be the worst movie I've every seen in my entire life. Sorry, Draug...
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
22 Sep 10 UTC
And whoever names all three films spoofed in the title...

You're a nerd, do you know that? :p

OK, my picks:

-Duck Soup, 1934, starring: The Marx Brothers (complete with Zeppo)
-Monty Python and The Quest For The Holy Grail, 1975, starring The Monty Python crew
-The Producers (yes, the film came first), 1968, Mel Brooks

And to close...

Obiwanobiwan wishes to voice his outrage at the discovery that the AFI (American Film Institute), in their list of Top 100 Comedies, has no works by Mel Brooks in the Top 10, but leaves "The Producers" at #11...give me a BREAK, I know I'd at least sub out "Annie Hall" (#4!) for most any Mel Brooks movie, especially that one...and DOUBLE outrage that the aforementioned "Annie hall" tops "Duck Soup," which comes in at #6! (For those who are curious, Some Like It Hot, Tootise, and Dr. Strangelove are #1, 2, and 3 respectively, so not too bad there, could've picked worse...but really Duck Soup should then at least be #4 for at least Aemican movies, and Mel deserves a spot...and before anyone mentions the name "Python," it's the AMERICAN Film Institute's list, so it was only of American films; throw in Monty Python and arguably a certain mistaken Messiah could be battling with the new President of Freedonia for the top spot...)

Hmmm. I just lost all respect for abgemacht when it comes to his taste in comedy.

If R&GareD doesn't count, then Sleeper (Woody Allen) will be my #3.

The Hangover--I was literally in tears for almost the entire movie.

I assume 42 is a reference to Hitchhiker's, but it was a book, radio program, and TV series before they ever made a movie from it.

@Draugnar:

R&G...I LOVE IT! Unfortunately it's a play, or, rather, it was a play first...part of the reason I like it so much (I might even go so far as to call it the last true masterpiece, at least for theatre, thus far, I can't think of any single play since 1968 that's been more meaningful than this great followup to not one but TWO great plays, Hamlet and Waiting For Godot, which might be my two favorite plays period and definitely Top 10 for my personal Best Literature of All-Time, and I acted ina production of R&G, was Polonius, my friends were great, four girls played R, G, the Player and Hamlet--and we WON the competition between So. Cal schools back in High School! But I digress, I could and probably would go on forever about R&G if I could...bottom line is it can't count, otherwise *I* would've nominated it!) ;)

@abgemacht:

How is that not understandable? ;)

Films nominated so far:

-Duck Soup
-Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail
-The Producers
-Young Frankenstein (GREAT pick, btw!)
-Blazing Saddles (Never seen it...)

How about the In-Laws, abgemacht? Or Murder By Death?

-Sleeper
-The Hangover

And yep, 42 from HitchHiker's what else? :p

Duck Soup
-Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail
-The Producers
-Young Frankenstein (GREAT pick, btw!)
-Blazing Saddles (Never seen it...)

BTW, if "Animal Crackers" and "Life of Brian" don't get nominated...tragedy!

PS. It's called Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

@Draugnar:

The title of the thread actually has references to 3 movies, though Dr. Stangelove being the most prominent (a bit ironic, as it's the film of the three I'm least familiar with...)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

And noted on Grail (anyway, my posting was only a model!) :p

And Stop Worrying goes well with Don't Panic I guess from Hitchikers.

No, that's part of Dr. Strangelove: or, how I learned to stop worrying an love the bomb
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Just for the record:

I found The Producers very painful to watch. I think it would have been very enjoyable on stage, though.

Also, I hate Monty Python : )

Dr. HACKENBUSH is Groucho's character from one of the "Golden Age" Marx Brothers films, "A Day At The Races." (A note since I'm a Groucho geek--Groucho actually said at one point in older yearas this was the character of all his roles he most identified with and even went so far as to refer to himself occasionally as "Hackenbush," which is a bit sad since the character's a classic comedic phony, he's a horse doctor who makes people believe he's a real human doctor and a great one, and the character actually has some moments where he feels bad for being a con artist in the beginning...so maybe a peek into Groucho's mind in later years, how he felt about himself?)

So Dr. Strangelove, A Day At The Races, and Life of Brian in the title, and The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy as well as Monty Python and the Holy Grail (the part where they confuse the fuse for the Holy Hand Grenade, ie, "count to three" five" five") in the below text.

Stranger Than Fiction has been one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. I'm not a big fan of Will Ferrel because most of the movies he does are a bit low brow for my tastes. But STF was definitely not low brow. Great movie, IMHO.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

-Duck Soup
-Monty Python and the Holy Grail
-The Producers
-Young Frankenstein
-Blazing Saddles
-Sleeper
-The Hangover
-The Italian Job (1969)
-Four Weddings and a Funeral
-Monty Python's Life of Brian

And abgemacht...you hate Monty Python and you don't like (EITHER VERSION?) "The Producers" as a film?

I simply do not know what to say, or THINK... ;) (Why do you hate those two, the film and MP overall, those are two icons right there...three if you count Gene Wilder as the original Leo Bloom in the original, 1968 version of "The Producers.")

CDs taken over by bots
There are quite a few decent algorithms out there for playing Diplomacy. Sure, they do not negotiate, but they do make decent choices based on the situation. Why not implement one of them so when a player goes CD, such bot simply takes over the country, until another player steps in?

wtf?
we all know that news is more entertainment than current events, and everything has a spin. Lately though, I've been feeling like I'm living inside a reality TV show or something. Everythings 'gone pear shaped'.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Causality, Divinity, and Free Will (To Power!) ;)
OK, so a bit of a hiatus after that GREAT Philosopher Knockout Contest (congrats to Plato, Seneca, Kant and Locke for being selected as the Rushmore of Philosophy...I'm sure they're honored.) ;) Anyway, fresh from my Philosophy of Religion class to the WebDip forums: Does causality prevent free will (at least as we conventionally think of it), would a deity do so...and just how free CAN mankind be? If there is no/limited free will, is morality a farce?
