"MadMarx Beyond Metrodome" End Of Draft Statement.
I was picking on the turn. Which means that I was picking last in the draft order, tenth out of ten people. It also means that the draft was a serpentine draft, where I would get last pick and first pick in alternating rounds; two picks in a row all draft.

Absurd logic thread

Make an argument using wacktacular reasonong. Example: bottled water should be taxed for road maintenance, because if more water was available we'd be further along in fusion research, but the bottled water companies don't want their product classified as a fuel, so they keep sabotaging fusion research, and hence force us to burn fossil fuels

OK, let's say there are 4 players left, 3 determine they'll draw and slowly destroy the 4th (diplomacy does nothing). If you are the 4th and have the ability to aid one of the others to solo, do you do it? I sure as hell would!

Is America Declining?
Following the path of Rome, to be specific.
FirstPreviousNextLast

Are We Following The Path of Rome?
Unfortunately, America is following the path of Rome. Rome fell due to a variety of factors, like inflation, low moral standards, unemployment, and ineffective government. We are already seeing evidence, if not full-fledged proof, of the preceding problems in America today. We need to get off the road towards destruction if we do not want to go the way of Rome.
Inflation is a major problem in America today. Economic competition from Asia, especially China, has created a dangerous, unsustainable consumer economy based on cheap credit. We experienced that not too long ago when the housing “bubble” burst. Rome experienced the exact same thing. Romans bought expensive merchandise from other countries, which caused a decrease of Roman currency in circulation. To compensate, the Roman government printed more money, which decreased the value of said money, which had disastrous effects on the already stagnant Roman economy. Our government is doing the exact same thing by printing more money.
Moral standards are at an all-time low in America. Prostitution and crime are rampant, and continue to spread, just as they did in Rome. The media and television glamorize dangerous activities and lifestyles like binge drinking and promiscuity. The government happily gives drug-addicted bums and prostitutes handouts, freshly taken from the wallets of hardworking, law-abiding citizens. Anyone who opposes the practice of giving money to people who do not deserve it are immediately gunned down, branded as “intolerant”. The media no longer faithfully reports the news; they seek the “scoop” for the almighty dollar. Is this a description of Rome or America? Or both?
Unemployment in America is around ten percent across the board, reaching close to fifteen percent in certain cities. Without work, people need to be propped up by the government, whose money ultimately comes from those with jobs. The unemployment rate in America is so high because we are under economic attack from China and other countries with cheap labor. Employment is suffering a three-pronged attack. Countries with cheap labor roll out the welcome mat for shady, greedy multinational corporations. Illegal immigrants take jobs (and taxpayer money) that rightfully belongs to Americans. To top it off, greedy labor unions keep demanding more and more from American companies already struggling to compete with Asia. Rome’s unemployment problem had different causes, but it is still the same problem.
Our American government does not work. Conservatives and liberals spend a lot more time fighting for power than actually solving any problems. Our Constitution is sound, just as Rome’s democratic system was sound when it was created. However, democracy does not work when it is bypassed. Rome’s upper class bypassed the democratic system (and the will of the people) by eliminating the democratic system and establishing a monarchy. Our democratic system is under attack from the courts. Both sides use corrupt judges and back-door technicalities to push their agenda and override the will of the people. The attack on the American system may be different from the attack on the Roman system, but it has the same objective: Bypass the will of the people.
America is following the same path as Rome. Our economy is being hampered by inflation, just like Rome. Our moral standards are downright pitiful, just like Rome. We have a major unemployment problem, just like Rome. Our government is not protecting us, just like Rome. It is the same story as Rome, just paraphrased and with a different cover.

master warrior you wasted your time typing that long message... And if I recall I don't remember hearing our government is a about collapse and that the constitution is under threat so...
FriedOkraBlues (100 D)
14 Sep 10 UTC
TMW, we would be following the path of Rome if it wasn't for four simple facts.

1) Inflation didn't cause the fall of the Roman Empire, its antiquated bureaucracy did.
2) Moral standards were no worse during the Empire than they were during the Republic; in fact, moral correctness and moral controls were far stricter in the twilight of the Roman Empire than they were in its dawn.
3) Your argument about the exportation of jobs to China is in direct contradiction to capitalist thought first expounded in the early 18th century. Put down your issue of WWII Monthly and go back and read The Wealth of Nations.
4) As a member of the American legal system, I find your statement about the use of judges and back-door technicalities to be pure hilarity. Maybe your friends on alt.conspiracies.freemasons will buy into that statement.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
14 Sep 10 UTC
To be fair, Rome mostly fell for different reasons. They overexpanded, had poor leadership and unfriendly neighbors. Also your statement about low moral standards spreading in Rome is simply false. I think a comparison to Rome is invalid.
stratagos (3269 D(S))

@TMW.

No.

To expand:
Point one: Your listed reasons for the "decline of the Roman Empire" are either incorrect, irrelevant to the core reason of the Empire's decline, or just friggin *goofy*. Although a debased currency, for one example, can lead to instability, stating that inflation invariably causes a nation to fall is idiotic.

Point two: Depending on how you define "decline", there were multiple reasons for the Roman Empire's decline. However, America does not face either barbarian invasions (and people who are going to bring up illegal immigration can just shut up, thank you, as there is a big difference between a guy trying to make a buck and a crowd of people looting, pillaging, raping, and burning.) or being surrounded by military threats.

Point three:
Whether all the points you bring up are correct or not - and to be frank, I'm not going to waste my time (again) pointing out the flaws in your reasoning, methodology, or facts - you are cherry picking your data points and ignoring the points where America is *not* like the Roman Empire. It'd be like me saying I'm just like Abraham Lincoln because I'm 1) white, 2) male, 3) am married with children and 4) think slavery sucks
FOB, the crack about TMW running for county comptroller on the Constitutionalist party ticket was hilarious. Thanks for giving me a chuckle.

And of course, that's the only real response to TMW's post.

TMW, a hint: look up the history of measles and the crisis of the third century. Or the name Gaiseric.
Mafialligator (239 D)

Pffffft. This is ridiculous nonsense. If we don't want America to "fall" we should go back to the good old days when everyone was perfect all the time, and the clouds were made from cotton candy.
This is all ideologically motivated nonsense. You're a professor right? Oh no wait, you were lying about that! But if you were a professor, I'd encourage you to go talk to one of your colleagues in your university's sociology department, or the history department. Since you can't do that, why don't you try reading a book written by someone who actually knows something in the field and isn't just trying to make an absurd ideological point? That means one not recommended to you on Freerepublic.com.
Seriously.
Also "Moral standards are at an all-time low in America." that's a completely subjective value judgment. I could, with as much justice, say that the world would be a better place if only people would wear fedoras more often. Why? Cause I happen to think fedoras look cool.
I'd argue that because we actually prosecute lynching, domestic assault, and child molestation argues that we're more moral now than ever.

C'mon guys. Is anybody shocked that TMW has a warped understanding of history?

I mean, he's only 17.

I mean, for starters, there were no good old days. Just old days. And Rome wasn't a democracy by a long shot. Not even in the idealized world of Cato.

The sooner we ignore him like that pimple on your ass that won't go away for a week, the better. And I know I'm as guilty of feeding the troll as anybody. I'm trying, yanno?

TMW, I've been wondering. You keep posting threads like this, and every time you do, we all band together to collectively roll our eyes at you, and patronizingly explain how the world actually works. And then we make fun of you. So why do you keep doing it?
Do you think you're actually breaking us down and convincing us, cause I'd say the evidence is not on your side.
Are you trolling? Because I always thought the point of trolling was to get people mad, not to get them smug and condescending.
Are you secretly a masochist? Do you get off to people telling you your political beliefs are wrong? Seriously, what is it?
Mafialligator (239 D)

Recommended reading for you, TMW:

"Are We Rome?" By Cullen.

Essentially the answer is "yes and no" as is the answer to most broad questions.

Anyway what you may NOT be so excited to learn is that one of the practices Rome engaged in that Cullen argues contributed to Rome's fall, that we also happen to do, is increased privatization or contracting of essential government functions. Rome did it so much that by the end their entire army was mercenaries. Our government absolutely relies on contractors these days.

Anyway that's Cullen's point though. One of many. He paints a very balanced pictured, so if you're interested in the topic of America-Rome comparison, you should read the book.

"To compensate, the Roman government printed more money"

I was unaware Rome had the printing press, let alone fiat currency.

More seriously, America is not Rome. Rome's decline was longer than the entire history of the United States, for one thing. America has more problems than I like to even think about, but I don't see hordes of Canadian barbarians threatening the Northern frontier or the White House Praetorian Guard assassinating Barackius Obamicus and installing Cearah Palinia as empress anytime soon. Calm down and stop being stupid.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that you plagiarized that first post, Professor diplomat1824, T.M.W. You're better than those Sicarian antics.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

"the White House Praetorian Guard assassinating Barackius Obamicus and installing Cearah Palinia as empress" - yeah, the CIA have the monopoly on presidential assasination, and that's only to keep future presidents in line... which has worked like a charm, just as Cuba and Israel :p

@TMW The Roman economy was to different from a modern economy to make those comparisons, as are the political, legal, and military situations. As for the moral situation well you have never read much about the every day life of Americans in the 19th century. The Romans were at their best before Christianity spread in their empire. So maybe we should restart the cults of Venus, Bacchus, and others.
Octavious (2701 D)

Italian food is not great by any stretch of the imagination. Yes, they can cook pasta and pizzas extremely well (but they are quite possibly the easiest foods to master on the face of the earth), but almost everything else is very average.

"The media no longer faithfully reports the news; they seek the “scoop” for the almighty dollar. Is this a description of Rome or America?" Well... not Rome certainly :p. I am very confused about how people measure morality. Not so long ago in the US it was seen by many as perfectly right and proper to forbid blacks to enter a club, and yet the act of going to a bar and drinking a pint of beer was illegal. I think the world of today is a lot more morally sound than it has been in previous generations.

I read your post TMW, and you are a complete idiot. Disregarding the cheap political shots, Rome's aristocracy did not bypass the democratic system and install a monarchy. The Roman Kingdom was BEFORE the Republic (and was overthrown by Brutus's ancestor), and the aristocracy didn't bypass the 'democratic' Senate to create the Empire. Also, wrong choice of words. Bypassing a democratic system does not mean replacing it with something else.
But, more fool me, I still take you seriously. :(
