FAO Everyone: DO NOT post accusations in the forum.
Do not post accusations in the forum. Ever. Under any circumstances.
Email [email protected] instead.
This is a rule that should just enforce itself without any effort, but sadly not. Don't be surprised if I start removing points for doing this, it is exceedingly unhelpful.

Race, Racism and Racists
A comment on another thread got me thinking. Someone on another thread had been called racist for expressing anti-German opinions. Is this really racism, or just jingoism?

Also why on earth is it the fashion in the US to classify those of Spanish decent as another race? Living in the south west of England I've always thought of Spaniards as white... very foreign, yes, but still white. Using the US system I've been living in a multi racial familiy without ever realising it!

Saying goodbye
The time has come for me to leave this site, and here's why.

Mindtech (100 D)

I've been an active player for about a month. I have been sorry to leave, but now I am sorry that I stayed to long.

I have become convinced that many games are broken, in the sense that some players control more than one nation, and some players don't really exist; they simply enter games to water down the competition.

As my ideal is more honorable I reject such behavior in other people, and not being a hacker or otherwise educated in internet relations, I have no way to prove anything. Nevertheless it is painfully clear for me to see. Some of you see it also, I have see your discussions. It is evident and it is present.
I have now had one too many of these set-up games and I shall take my leave, to spend my time better elsewhere. I wish those honorable of you lots of pleasant games, and those of you compelled to cheat; I wish you more self confidence. When you one day stop cheating, you will know the true value of winning.

There are ways to prevent ending up in a game with multis. But I do agree that it's a sad situation, esspeccialy in the low pot games, where there's little to gain for cheaters.

Man, looked at your games and you drew Italy an awful lot, that's rough. Here's hoping to a more Italy-free future for you.

@MinTech - just hang out on the forum and get to know people, then invite them to private passworded games. I'll play you and I'm sure most of the forum regulars (who are generally by the rules kind of folks) would as well.

I view multis/metas as an opportunity to prove I'm better than them by forcing them into a draw. When it is one nation against two or more and the one nation is part of the draw or beats the others, that nation is clearly the superior player.

Mindtech, should you feel the itch come back, consider joining the spring/summer league once it starts. Fall/winter league still has 2 or 3 games to complete before spring/summer can start. It is only four games, one starting every two weeks, but they've been great games for me at least.

I feel your pain, Mindtech. Basically, I have a burning hatred for cheaters (in all walks of life, not just Diplomacy), and I'm currently experiencing my first game where I'm having to deal with 3 powers that I'm convinced are either all the same person or all friends that will never betray one another. I've been having a blast on WebDiplomacy up until now, and this one instance alone has left me VERY angry. It just sucks because I feel powerless to stop it.

Anyway, best of luck to you in your future endeavors. Bummer that you're being forced to leave because others just aren't playing fair.

Thank you so much for the encouragement.

I agree that Draugnar's approach should solve the problem for the individual, but not for the collective, which I believe to be more important. In order for Draugnar's approach to work in the long run, every single new person should be told to hook up with people on the forum, in order to avoid the dead end games. (Draugnar: I see your point and this is not an attack on you. I simply wish for more than you propose.)

The ideal situation would be to make it near-impossible to cheat from the beginning, or otherwise make people very aware from the beginning of how to avoid dead end gamers/games.

And now here I am once again, wishing for something to be different and not doing anything about it except talking. Once they get that cloning machine up and running, I'll see you in the line... In the mean time, got bigger fish to fry! :-)

So you played in 4 games and think the entire site is broken? I don't think so. Is there cheating? According to the mods, yes. Is it rampant and ruining every game. No.
KaiserWilly (664 D)
07 Apr 10 UTC
Oh my God! Look at yourselves!

There used to be almost no forum posts about cheating and all of a sudden, one account gets banned for multi-accounting and every single game now has cheaters. I have attempted to restrain myself and watch the festivities but this has gone far enough. Shame on you Mindtech, shame on you!

I have looked at all of your games and I do not see any indications of cheating in any of them. Just because you lost a few diplomacy games, does not mean that the people who beat you were cheating. To accuse the person who beat you in a game of cheating is the mark of a sore loser, and someone who can’t take defeat. If that is the case, maybe you don’t belong on WebDiplomacy anyway. You don’t kick the board and run away from a game when you lose. You shake the persons hand and thank them for the good game.

Not only do you advertise yourself as an idiot, but you make other people hysterical about cheating every single time you make an accusation. That goes for everybody else on this website too. Stop making accusations of cheating and grow up.

As to you Mindtech, I am ashamed that someone on this website finds the need not only to leave but to advertise it. If you want to leave, do so quietly and stop ruining everyone else’s experience on this website. Otherwise, I want you to be mature about your actions and act like an adult.

These things tend to come in somewhat frenzied outbursts. There was one a while back about the code mysteriously changing orders, which should really have had some spooky music written for it and all. They pass before long.

Mindtech, both Timur and Draugnar have valid points. We need honest people playing on this site and there are ways around getting trapped in a game with multis/metas. Get to know people in the forum and PM a password to them. Until then just avoid games that you suspect are tainted.
akilies (861 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
plus 4 games isn't a very big taste of diplomacy, if you play you'll find there are may very respectable people on this sight who want to play and play honestly.

stick around for a little longer play some games with some of the people on this thread maybe, a lot of us have been around for quite a while and don't cheat as far as i know.

well except ghost he's always changing my moves to keep me from improving my GR ;)

I haven't had any noticeable problems with cheating. I don't play much gunboat anymore, but when I did there was never really any blatant cheating...
hellalt (24 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
Mindtech I have finished 100+ games and I have encountered multiaccounters only in one of them.
wydend (0 DX)
08 Apr 10 UTC
My record is not as clean as hellalt's but I have played 50 games and only had 4 have multiaccounters, 3 of which were live games. So I rarely play live games now (only on occassion when someone I know is legit creates a passworded one) and it has helped greatly.

If you stick it out, and play less live games maybe you will encounter less of it.
hellalt (24 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
live gunboat games is the most popular multiaccounters' choice.
KaiserWilly (664 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
@Ursa

I'm definately not saying that cheating does not exist on this website, but it certainly occurs at much less of a frequency than Mindtech suggests. What I was saying, if you took the time to actually read my post, was that if people lose, they should not accuse who they lost to of cheating.

I should have made clearer that if a player suspects cheating, they should not announce it on the forum. That is what causes these hysterias.
urallLESBlANS (0 DX)
08 Apr 10 UTC
I was very suspicious when I first joined this site. I think I made at least two accusations within the first month. I'm fairly certain both were either multi-accounters or metagamers. Since then I've realized that its not so bad, especially in higher point games. I've played about 40 games total on this site, and only a few have really had suspicious game play. This is easily the best site for Diplomacy, and just the forum by itself is worth your time.
shadowlurker (108 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
if you ever have suspicions confirm them by looking at the past games. if they have meta gamed before then you can tell. then send it to the mods instead of posting" ehy look at these cheaters"
ashleygirl (1131 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
One game in 39 for me. I think the majority of people think cheating is exorbitant when they first join. Stick around, the more you play you will be able to tell the difference.
