FAO Everyone: DO NOT post accusations in the forum.
Do not post accusations in the forum. Ever. Under any circumstances.
Email [email protected] instead.
This is a rule that should just enforce itself without any effort, but sadly not. Don't be surprised if I start removing points for doing this, it is exceedingly unhelpful.

Race, Racism and Racists
A comment on another thread got me thinking. Someone on another thread had been called racist for expressing anti-German opinions. Is this really racism, or just jingoism?

Also why on earth is it the fashion in the US to classify those of Spanish decent as another race? Living in the south west of England I've always thought of Spaniards as white... very foreign, yes, but still white. Using the US system I've been living in a multi racial familiy without ever realising it!

favorite albums?
name some of your favorite albums, just because i miss these forums and i like talking about music.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
Here are 10 of mine (in no particular order):

Megadeth: "Rust In Peace"
AC/DC: "Powerage"
Y&T: "Earthshaker"
Montrose: "Montrose"
Boston: "Boston"
Wishbone Ash: "Argus"
Rainbow: "Rising"
Cheap Trick: "Live At Budokan"
Anthrax: "Among The Living"
Dio: "Holy Diver"
albums? what's an album grandpa?

Its funny, I just had to explain this to my 6 year old. He doesn't know what a CD is, only files on an ipod, so he doesn't understand that artists release blocks of songs at one time.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)

On the one hand, that's frightening. On the other, I guess he is only six.

I mourn the death of the record shop, which the downloading of music is fast bringing about. I don't like downloading songs. I like to go into a shop and purchase a physical object that I can hold in my hand.

How long is it going to be before we all have a cybernetic implant, and just download music and films directly into our brains?

Funeral by Arcade Fire - maybe not my favourite of all time, but as far as a whole record goes, Funeral was solid.
Troodonte (3379 D)

My favourites:
Nevermind - Nirvana
Cure for Pain - Morphine
Funeral - Arcade Fire
Troodonte (3379 D)

A few off the top of my head:

Pink Floyd: The Final Cut
Big Head Todd and the Monsters: Stratagem, Midnight Radio
REM: Fables of the Reconstruction
The Replacements: Please to Meet Me
The Clash: London Calling
SRV: Texas Flood
"Pink Floyd: The Final Cut"

Wow. Whenever I look at lists of 'Favorite Floyd Albums', this is always dead last. But its my favorite too.
Sex Pistols: Never Mind the Bollocks
Dead Kennedys: Fresh Fruits for Rotting Vegetables
Meat Puppets: Meat Puppets II
U2: Joshua Tree
Enya: Watermark

and anything released by Neil Diamond
Rare Eagle (476 D)

@DJ - I like Animals, Meddle and Wish You Were Here a lot too, but Final Cut is way underrated. For anyone growing up in the 80's with real fear of nuclear war - it was very realistic - and musically it is solid too.

Also check out The Kings of Leon and Arcade Fire.

"old, old, old and OLD!!! Geeze doesn't anyone listen to new rock anymore? No wonder Rap and Pop dominate the radio today."

The older stuff is the best. There is a lot of popular rock that people like for some reason, but in truth it sucks (ie Nickleback).

A recent album that I like is Breaking Benjamin's "Dear Agony".
wydend (0 DX)

+2 Hunter for both the Nickleback reference for sucking, and the new Breaking Benjamin album for being good.

Beatles - Sgt. Pepper (the way it was meant to be... with Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on it... they were going to be on it but were released as singles and thus, according to the habit at the time, delayed their LP release until Magical Mystery Tour)
Radiohead - OK Computer
U2 - Joshua Tree
Cure - Head on the Door
Psychedelic Furs - Forever Now
Joni Mitchell - Ladies of the Canyon
Pink Floyd - Animals
Joy Division - Closer
Aimee Mann - Lost in Space
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Yet more old stuff from me .....

Jefferson Airplane - Volunteers
The Doors - The Doors
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets
Grateful Dead - Live Dead (I could include almost any of the live Dead albums!)
Yes - The Yes Album
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Jimi Hendrix - Axis Bold As Love
Neil Young - After the Goldrush
Paul Kantner - Blows Against the Empire

They are just some of my favourites - not politically significant - just given me much pleasure over the years and bring back good memories.

Ugh, national embarassment when Nickelback played at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Newer rock is good too. Don't get stuck in your classic rock and older prog rock. There's a whole new world out there, and I'm not talking about that crappy radio pop-rock or the travesty that is nu-grunge or whatever the hell its called. You know what I mean. But then, why limit yourself to rock? =P

Check out some of these:
Band of Horses
Blackfield
Cymbals Eat Guitars
Grandaddy
Grizzly Bear
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Hey Rosetta!
Porcupine Tree
Sunset Rubdown
The Wrens
Wilco

Granted, some of these may stretch the definition of rock, but whatever. I'm not even getting into post-rock. =)

There's too much good music around. Much more bad music, but still, way too much good music. I'll never live long enough.
spyman (424 D(G))

You have fine taste music Chrispminis.

I'll name some of my favourite 90's albums:
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Rain
Yo La Tengo - I Can Heart Beating as One
Teenage Fanclub - Grand Prix
Air - Moon Safari
Daft Punk - Homework
Fountains of Wayne - Fountains of Wayne
Weezer - Pinkerton
Nirvana - Nevermind
Ween - The Mollusk
Wilco - Being There
Grandaddy - Under The Western Freeway
Sparklehorse - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot
The La's - The La's

I think maybe the Shins might be close to my favourite band of the 2000s thus far. (It really is hard to say, I listen to so much music, but that's how I feel right now).
spyman (424 D(G))
09 Apr 10 UTC
That should read:
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (I could have just as easily said Slanted and Enchanted or Wowee Zowee).
spyman (424 D(G))
09 Apr 10 UTC

Pete U (293 D)

i like classic rock, but i never understood why so many people liked pink floyd.

let there be rock - AC/DC

appetite for destruction - guns n roses

newer stuff
all killer no filler - sum 41
enema of the state - blink 182
from here to infirmary - alkaline trio
ixnay on the hombre - the offspring
energy - operation ivy

ill probably get criticized a lot for that last list, along with my disapproval of pink floyd, but oh well.
daytripper1993 (100 D)

dexter morgan (225 D(S))
09 Apr 10 UTC
@iMurk789, I actually didn't get Pink Floyd at all until later... I think it was their pace... very slow... as well as their habit of developing ideas over sometimes 20 minutes or more that caused me to not pay them attention... that and the fact that their biggest hits were (and continue to be) for me the songs that were poppy and of the least interest (Money and Another Brick in the Wall, for example)... so I discounted them without listening to their albums from start to finish. However, that said, given your posted tastes I'm not sure you would get into one of their albums (they might simply be too soft and slow). You might get something out of their earliest stuff - Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Relics would be interesting to try (only if you can stomach '60s psychedelia, though... as some of their earliest stuff is a bit dated that way... but at least it is quirky and faster paced which might appeal to you).

Oh - and I forgot to include these on my list:
Genesis - Duke
Elliott Smith - Figure 8
The Cars - Heartbreak City
Depeche Mode - Violator

I appreciate the new music lists, by the way... some of the groups I know and already like (The Shins, for example) but it is a constant learning curve... so much good music to discover. I'm actually going to plug in a number of these into YouTube or Amazon and see what they sound like. Strangely enough I'm often willing to buy unknown groups based on 30 second clips of songs...
In no order whatsoever

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Rush - Moving Pictures
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin 1
Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
Pink Floyd - Animals
Roger Waters - The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking
Indigo Girls - Indigo Girls
Jakob Dylan - Seeing Things
White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
Metallica - Ride The Lighting
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Rare Eagle (476 D)
09 Apr 10 UTC
Forgot a couple that haven't been mentioned:
Son Volt - Trace
Gov't Mule - Banks of the Deep End (vol.1 and 2)
Joe Bonamassa - Sloe Gin
Indigenous - Waiting for the Sun
