And so it begins - Rollback Cheating
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6792
In this game, pre-rollback, my lunge for North Sea as Russia was successful; Nilocy (England) altered Denmark's orders to something he NEVER would have dared do without knowing what was going to happen in advance to block it.
What now?

something this site needs
this site needs a way to search the database of users in this game to look at their profiles. otherwise, its a horrendous search on forums, open games, etc to find the player youre looking for. it would also be nice to add players to a list of people you keep tabs on like a buddy list.

Obsession
I think I have an obsession with this game. I haven't found any game this fun since risk. I am playing a total of thirteen games and I'm constantly online checking, even though I have research papers to work on. It doesn't help that I joined all fast games and people on this site are always on to play and message. I think I need help.

I'm usually pretty good about answering this type of question for others, but I don't see it this time.
Italy moves Tyrollia to Vienna and Bohemia supports it. Why did it fail?

Perpetually paused games...

What happens to paused games that never get unpaused? Are the points invested in those games simply lost?
If the whole idea of the point system is to never allow a player to have less than a hundred points either invested in a game or available how does one resolve paused games that one or more players refuse to unpause?

About 9 hours ago someone set everyone's points to 9999999. Looking through the logs and the code I couldn't find any way this could have happened, but I did notice that the permissions on our directory were rather lax. Any Dreamhost user could have accessed the folder and got the database password, which would explain the lack of logs

I've changed the database password and the authentication cookie salt, which means people who had "Remember me" enabled will need to log-in again. This is to stop the person from being able to log on as anyone they like in the future

Your passwords will be safe, because they're hashed and stored using a salt which means they can't be looked up in a table, but they could have looked at your e-mail

No files were altered, because outside users could only read the files but not modify them

The database backup is from ~9 hours ago, and game times were moved forward 9 hours. Sorry for the inconvenience, hopefully now this won't happen again, but I'll be watching everything carefully

Also I'm cleaning out the map store, partly because it will contain maps for games and turns which no longer exist, but also because there are ~4gb of maps in there and most of them are for old games

In one of our league games I had orders set in and the adjudication went through early afternoon. However, now that the time went back all my units were set to hold and there is only a couple hours left in phase. I worry that not everyone is going to get to move and they won't know it.

I hate to be a bother... but one of my games has already reajudicated: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6657

Actually looking back I didn't set the games ahead enough to account for the backup, I'll restore the game tables and move the time back further

Thanks for your hard work, Kestas. Keep up the good work!
Some strange stuff is still happening. I've had two games resent back after putting in moves, and now I'm getting a strange thing where i can't build in an open PC where I had previoiusly built (and frankly need to build in). This is wrecking the game.
Is it possible to pause game 7133 "Another Fast Game." The reset has really screwed up the game and a number of players aren't on line and the clock seems to be flying by (12 hours down to 3 in seemingly 15 minutes).
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
07 Dec 08 UTC
Greivous, I did move all games back because I found out the backup was older than I thought, that might explain times changing but they should be changing so you get more time, not less :-/

Let me know if you notice anything odd happening

(Unless it moved back far enough that you moved back a turn)
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

Kestas, it seems that it's no longer possible to make a build somewhere you built pre-reset if there was a phase completion during the rolled-back time.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

Unrelated note, I'm going to be sad if I'm deprived of my Mediterranean Blockade in a game where I just set one up....
Kestas - can you please just pause "Another Fast Game" - there have been two votes from myself and the only other online member - just so no one gets upset. The reset really overthrew the game (though obviously there was nothing you could do about that - but we should talk before next moves). Oh - and second on the point of the not being able to build where you had built before the reset.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))

Can you give an example of that?

This one got its own topic. Rome, Naples, Constantinople.
I had built a fleet in Rome before the reset (and had subsequently moved it). Now in that game (which has gone back to the build before the move) I am only given the option of building in Naples. No choice in the matter.

I'm in a few games that got resolved before the reset, and people saw the outcome, but now everyone needs to re-submit the same orders they submitted last time, even if thngs didn't go well for them? What do we do if people change up their orders to get a different outcome (I assume this is "cheating", right?)??
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
07 Dec 08 UTC
Looks like I didn't restore a table in the backup, or the gamemaster was working on a game while I was restoring the old tables, might have to do it again :-( Really have to stop shooting myself in the foot now

Madmarx; I don't know, but there's no fair solution/rule for things like this
thewonderllama (100 D)
07 Dec 08 UTC
Kestas, any chance you could add say, whatever the turn length is set to to active games? I imagine there are plenty of people who won't be checking in soon enough thinking they have more time than they do before their next phase.

I'd also like to echo the sentiments of others that I appreciate how quickly you moved on this issue and for keeping us all in the loop.

In the above game, we had already gone through the build phase and entered spring orders, but the reset put us back before the builds. Now the game won't let me build in the same SCs as last time. Is there any way to fix this and possibly extend the time again?
valoishapsburg (314 D)
07 Dec 08 UTC
I too appreciate Kestas' effectiveness in dealing with the issue.

I would also like to say I understand where Madmarx is coming from. I think it would be fair to reissue the same orders that went into the turns before the games where reset, as understandably anyone who saw the outcome would be able to prepare for it.

a similar problem is retreats to the build issue
in http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6007

my italian tyrr fleet was pushed out, i had it set to retreat to naples but now the clock has turned back and it tells me that no retreat options are available

I've disabled the board, I thought the backup would appear soon after I posted the previous message but Dreamhost are taking quite a while
spyman (424 D(G))

valoishapsburg - I don't know if getting everyone to play the same moves is going to work out. It can't be enforced, and their is no point automatically playing the same moves if there is no guarantee that other players will. Also some players might not remember exactly what they played. I agree in principle but I don't think its practical. The cat is out of the bag, I am afraid. I would be interested to hear what others think.

Honor system. Everyone should play their same moves.
valoishapsburg (314 D)
07 Dec 08 UTC
Oh, well I know it cant be enforced, nor will it probably happen. I simply think that would be the fair route. Fair and practical arent the same thing in this situation. I was posting that in regards to MadMarx's post.
spyman (424 D(G))
07 Dec 08 UTC
As I said I agree it would be fair. Is that what you are going to do in all your games?
My concern for my games is that my opponents now know the moves I was going to play. I could be fair and play the same moves, but what if they don't? At the moment I am thinking that I am just going to have deal with the situation as I find it - and play my best moves knowing that my plans have been revealed.
I am not absolutely set on this course though - I still would like to see what others think.

League Notice on roll back
If the game you are in has been set back by a phase, for fairness' sakes you are expected to order the same moves as you did before. I hope everyone will comply, because, if they do not, it will be a right headache for me to get to the bottom of it.
