Best Of?
I've been getting into the game a lot more recently and was wondering if there was any sort of listing of great or best games of Diplomacy. Games with great strategy, alliances, backstabs, drama, that kind of stuff.

In lue of that post your favorite or best games here. I'm up for reading some good stories.

Go with a desktop.

Dell Inspiron:
i7-4500U, 1.8GHz
8 GB RAM
1 TB HDD
Intel 4400 Graphics

vs

Asus VivoBook
i7-3517U, 1.9GHz
6 GB RAM
500GB HDD, 25GB SSD
Intel 4000 graphcis

Both roughly the same price. I'm trying my best to understand the specs but they seem close enough that I'm not sure which one should have better performance.
flip a coin, by far the best and easiest way to choose

The second one is obviously better...
first one

@Tru, the moment I stop living the life of a transient, I'll get a desktop. I hope it's soon.

Whichever you choose, never try out the other option. If you don't understand the alternative, you won't regret your decision.

Yonni, it really depends on what you're going to use them for.

(and, by the way, Thinkpads currently tend to be the best in price)
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
03 Jun 14 UTC
The first is better. If the only thing the second has on the first is a graphics card, you can probably buy a better one and swap it out.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Jun 14 UTC
Build quality and support is going to be far better with Asus than Dell. For that reason alone, I'd go with the 2nd one.

What do you opan on using it for? That's what really matters.
Yonni (136 D(S))
03 Jun 14 UTC
The 1st one has the better graphics card. The 2nd one just has the SSD

I don't game that heavily - although I'd like to play a bit of civ5 or the new XCOMM.
I'll use it for a bit of work and maybe some really light coding.

A Honda is better than a Ford, even if the engine is slightly less powerful.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I don't think either of those laptops will handle XCOMM well.

Here, slightly more, but if you buy through Amazon or Costco you get a 2 year extended warranty, with US 24/7 help desk support.

Meh, so no xcomm. I have a ps3 that I can use for gaming. Thanks for the advice guys.

It depends on your need. The 8 Gig versus the 6 Gig is nice for memory intensive apps. The 4400 video is the nicer video card, the 1 TB drive gives more storage, but the add-on small SSD gives faster boot times. The processors are both dual-core with hyper threading and just fine (I run an i7U in my Sony Vaio touch, great processor).

And you *can't* swap out the video cards in a laptop as those Intel video cards are integrated in the processors and laptops don't usually have AGP or PCIe slots in them.
Yonni (136 D(S))
03 Jun 14 UTC
Boot time doesn't seem all that important, what's an extra little bit of time whenever I then the thing on - or am I misinterpreting it?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Jun 14 UTC
An SSD will also load large files, like video game levels, much quicker.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Jun 14 UTC
Well, you can also have the SSD be your paging file drive and there it is *very* important. But remember that SSDs still have some questionable reliability. They either fail very early or they live forever. I've replaced the one in my Sony that died within two months but the new one is now almost a year and a half old and running great.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Jun 14 UTC
As small as that SSD is, I doubt he'd be loading applications onto it. It will probably strictly be a system drive.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Don't most SSD/HDD combos come with software to prefetch data from the HDD to the SSD now?
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
03 Jun 14 UTC
@abge, that transfer isn't going to be smooth enough to play any type of intensive game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Jun 14 UTC
I don't know about the prefetch software as my system is pure SSD:
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Jun 14 UTC
This is my system:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ13U7840

Mine is a little older (18 months old) and has the older brushed aluminum outside, but the specs are the same.
PSMongoose (2384 D)
03 Jun 14 UTC
I'm sorry, Draugnar, but that's a terrible price. You could buy a (significantly better) MacBook Pro for less. And MacBooks are commonly thought of as overpriced...

Drinking healthy
I'm quite a balanced eater, so it's not exactly vital, but apart from water, it seems like almost every drink is unhealthy for your body or teeth in some way. Of course, I could just make sure I vary enough, and I do, but I still think it's good to know what's actually healthy rather than "not that bad".

I absolutely don't have to worry about too much calories, btw. I'm talking about the other stuff.

Does this game have to be cancelled?
Hi. I'm currently in this game in which we had 3 people get banned. There haven't been any moves made yet and it is still in spring 1901. So if we were able to fill the positions, 1 of which has been filled already, would we be allowed to continue? Here's a link to the game.

Texas was banned, and without a replacement it's going to be a very one-sided game.

The Favorite Author Tournament: The Round of 32
And here we go, into Round 2, with Shakespeare being out due to his losing again...because he's the master of tragedy, of course! ;) Will there be literary superstars? Yes! Will there be a glut of sci fi and fantasy writers? Yes! Will Thucy continue push a #ThoreauLaozi2016 platform (Change We Can Believe In...except change is just a natural process and you must learn to accept it like the good little Transcendentalist that you are!) YES! ;) 32 authors, 1 goal...whatever that is.

The Last Man in Europe...Or, Rather, China
http://news.yahoo.com/25-years-tiananmen-barely-known-china-youth-064659528.html That's honestly very depressing...It was 1989...but its treatment is not too far from "1984." And THIS is why I have such a hard time sympathizing with those shouting "Wake the Fuck Up," as if disagreement over America's future was the equivalent to being asleep at the wheel. Neither Bush nor Obama were the tyrants the Michael Moores and Glenn Becks call them out to be...THIS is The Party incarnate...

Lil' bit of French
I want to know how to say this in French:
"(I would like to reserve the spot) in the period from 16 July to 6 August."
That might not even be a proper English sentence, but you probably get what I mean. I just need to make clear in which period, and I don't know how.
Monday morning I'm handing in a letter in which I need that sentence, so there's no rush.

I don't see anyone else posting about Maya Angelou, but similarly to those few gifted people like her, her brilliance shone even in her final hours. A few of her final words, more of which are going to be broadcasted at baseball's Civil Rights Game in Houston today in her memory:
