Does this game have to be cancelled?
Hi. I'm currently in this game in which we had 3 people get banned. There haven't been any moves made yet and it is still in spring 1901. So if we were able to fill the positions, 1 of which has been filled already, would we be allowed to continue? Here's a link to the game.

The Favorite Author Tournament: The Round of 32
And here we go, into Round 2, with Shakespeare being out due to his losing again...because he's the master of tragedy, of course! ;) Will there be literary superstars? Yes! Will there be a glut of sci fi and fantasy writers? Yes! Will Thucy continue push a #ThoreauLaozi2016 platform (Change We Can Believe In...except change is just a natural process and you must learn to accept it like the good little Transcendentalist that you are!) YES! ;) 32 authors, 1 goal...whatever that is.

The Last Man in Europe...Or, Rather, China
http://news.yahoo.com/25-years-tiananmen-barely-known-china-youth-064659528.html That's honestly very depressing...It was 1989...but its treatment is not too far from "1984." And THIS is why I have such a hard time sympathizing with those shouting "Wake the Fuck Up," as if disagreement over America's future was the equivalent to being asleep at the wheel. Neither Bush nor Obama were the tyrants the Michael Moores and Glenn Becks call them out to be...THIS is The Party incarnate...

Lil' bit of French
I want to know how to say this in French:
"(I would like to reserve the spot) in the period from 16 July to 6 August."
That might not even be a proper English sentence, but you probably get what I mean. I just need to make clear in which period, and I don't know how.
Monday morning I'm handing in a letter in which I need that sentence, so there's no rush.

I need advice about buying an mp3 player / iPod
I have never owned/operated an mp3 player / iPod, but I'd really like to get one, so I'm looking for advice from those who have been there and done that already.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I don't want to use my phone for listening to music as the battery goes away fast enough on its own.

I do want to legally "own" the music I listen to, for the most part at least.

If the device breaks and I have to buy a new one, how to I get the music back? Do I have to use iTunes to do that? Are there alternatives that are better?

Anything I should watch out for?

My price range is probably up to around $150.

Thanks!

If you want to legally own your music but still have a large amount to choose from, I'd suggest buying an extra battery for your phone and getting Spotify Premium. The battery will help with other things and you'll probably end up spending less in the long run.

Spotify Premium is great. I save at least $50 a month, and iTunes keeps on raising prices... the songs were $.69 at first. Now they're double that.

Premium is $5/month, and you can get it on your computer or a mobile phone, but if you don't want to get it on your phone, I don't think the old iPods support it.
yebellz (729 D(G))
29 May 14 UTC
If you're willing to carry around an extra device, you might find it easier just to carry around an extra battery for your phone. However, as other's have noted, music playback is a relatively low drain on your battery. The biggest consumers of power on a phone are typically the screen and networking (cell or wifi).

An mp3 player would be loaded with music by connecting to a PC. You won't have to worry about losing your music, as long as your mp3's on your computer are safe and backed up.

There are a lot of ways to get mp3s legally these days. You can buy mp3s on amazon, itunes, etc. Streaming services (spotify, pandora, etc.) are also an option, but those will require network usage and hence drain the battery faster. Also, if you already have an extensive CD collection, you can rip those to mp3s via Windows media player or iTunes.

Spotify is undoubtedly the way to go. Couldn't be more satisfied with it.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I run Windows Live XPass and Rhapsody on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 in the Jeep (don't need it in the Mercedes as it bluetooths to my phone) but they'll run on any cheap WiFi only tablet and you can use the WiFi to back everything up to the cloud as well as download the music from the services. If you go with an add on to your current phone plan, you can stream the stuff too and probably get the tablet for damn near free.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
29 May 14 UTC
@abge, I'm not sure how much is how much. In a perfect world I imagine 50-100 albums worth. I'm not sure how much music players can hold these days.

Regarding Spotify, it sounds like that is a streaming service, right? Does that mean that it only works if you have an internet connection? Or can you download and play music offline? I'd really like to be able to listen to my music offline.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 May 14 UTC
Pretty much any mp3 player will hold 100 albums.

Both Spotify and Rdio are primarily streaming services. They will use battery and also data if you aren't on WiFi. Some services like Google Music offer a combination of online/offline. But their selection isn't great. I'm not sure if Spotify or Rdio have this offline option.

Honestly, I'd just go with a classic iPod. It holds an infinite amount of music and is very very simple to use. Buy your music on amazon and download it to your computer. Import it to your iTunes library and you're done.
2ndWhiteLine (2736 D(B))
29 May 14 UTC
If you want to "own" your music then a streaming service isn't for you.

Another consideration is sound quality. A typical .mp3 file will run 256kps - 320kps, which sounds fine in most headphones but will be lacking in depth with higher end headphones and surround sound stereos.

I have Spotify and I love it. It has an offline mode, where you can temporarily store playlists on your phone or mp3 player but it does take up storage space that can't easily be recovered without deleting and reinstalling the app. Like abge said, though, your best bet is an iPod Classic and download albums on Amazon, which are usually equal in price or cheaper than iTunes.
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 May 14 UTC
Why do you all push him to an iPod? iPoSes are all expensive. The same cheap Android tablet I mentioned before can run Amazon's music service where you can *buy* and *download* (or stream) your MP3s a heck of a lot cheaper than buying an iPoS plus access iTunes if you really want and Mixrosoft's Xbox Live Music Pass and Rhapsody and Spotify and Rdio and Pandora and pretty much all the other music services - streaming and download alike.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 May 14 UTC
Because an Android tablet is fucking huge. Do you know how people listen to music?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 May 14 UTC
Also, byou don't have to buy your music from iTunes if you have an iPod. You can still buy fromAmazon, which is what I recommended.

This is really the only situation where I'd recommend an apple product, but an ipod is probably the way to go here. It's easy to use, and the battery life is unrivaled for anything of it's size.
SandgooseXXI (113 D)

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I'd recommend the classic over the touch. You're paying for a lot of stuff that isn't an mp3 player with the touch.

Thank you all for the input, I really appreciate it.

Now that it has been brought up, size is a concern as I want to have it while jogging, biking, or on roller blades; and especially while doing yard work. Thus an mp3 player solution versus a tablet solution. But I still appreciate the input Draugnar, thanks.
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 May 14 UTC
Not all tablets are huge. But if all you plan to do is play music, then I guess the iPod is fine. The moment you decide you want to browse the web or something (ala the touch) get a 7" android tablet. Much better visibility than a touch and much cheaper than an iPad mini.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
29 May 14 UTC
I have a very strong aversion to laptops due to the keyboards and touchpads. I spend all day with a real keyboard and mouse, trying to use a laptop is infuriating. But a touch screen tablet would be acceptable if I ever wish to have portable internet with a bigger screen than my android phone. Thanks.
ghug (5068 D(B))

I'd like to again profess the virtues of Spotify, as it seems people aren't agreeing with me. You can save things offline, stream things when you have web access, change what you have stored, upload the occasional music that Spotify doesn't have from your computer over wifi, and not waste way too much money on an Apple product or music ever again.
spyman (424 D(G))

I would suggest an iPod Nano if you want a small mp3 player for jogging. You can even buy specially modified iPod Nano that has been waterproofed for swimming from Waterfi. I don't have an iPod Nano but I have a waterproof iPod shuffle that I bought from Waterfi that I use for swimming laps. I stick it on the back of my goggles. Makes swimming much less boring.

If really just want a dedicated MP3 player then iPod Nano or iPod Classic (160gb).

I use a cheap generic mp3 player and haven't had any real issues with it, but I'm not expecting a lot from it either. If it breaks or gets lost, not a big deal.

If cost is an issue, try refurbished.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
29 May 14 UTC
@ghug, several people agreed with you early on. And I very much appreciate the additional information that it can allow some offline use. Do you know how much can be saved on my phone for offline use? Is that limited by my phone or by Spotify?

Part of my problem is my phone relatively sucks so I'm a bit reluctant to depend on it. I need to get more outlet phone charger cables so I can have them all over the house.

I think the smart move is to give Spotify Premium a try. If I end up not liking it, I'm only out a small amount of cash and can then go blow a wad at the MAC store.
ghug (5068 D(B))
29 May 14 UTC
Sorry, that came off sounding bitter, which was not my intention. I just want to make sure you get both sides.

Their FAQ says you can save up to 3,333 songs offline. I'm not sure if that's a joke and you can have as many as your phone allows or if they actually do cut you off, but that's a good amount of songs either way, and I've never had a problem with it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 May 14 UTC
At 1 meg per minute for 256k MP3 encoding, 3,333 songs is about 10,000 minutes or 10 gig. I doubt you have that much space on your phone as you sound like a non-geek when it comes to modern electronics.
Frank (100 D)
30 May 14 UTC
The iPod shuffle is $50 dollars (including headphones). Great battery life and it has enough size to fit 10 or 20 albums. The best part is the built-in clip, which is great for running and stuff. The downside is no screen but if you organize your music into playlists, its not that bad.
ssorenn (0 DX)

trip (696 D(B))
31 May 14 UTC
It coverts videos on youtube into mp3 format.
Draugnar (0 DX)
31 May 14 UTC
But MP3 is an audio format. MP4 is a video format.
yes. YouTube has a lot of 'videos' that are just songs with a still screen or some fluff video to go with. there are converters online that will convert the audio of these videos (the song) into its own file

@trip, I recommend video2mp3.net
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
31 May 14 UTC
@trip, just google Youtube to mp3, you'll find plenty of free sites. Of course it's not technically legal so I don't encourage that. Though it's easier to just use advanced google searches to look for mp3 versions of songs. There are tons of DJ's who upload mp3 files to playlists that are technically public, which google bots find easily but don't display on a normal search, just watch out for malware.

@Draug, there are plenty of online tools that will just rip the audio off a youtube url into an mp3. Most of them have crappy sound quality but even some of the free ones are pretty good.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
31 May 14 UTC
For example:
(intitle:index.of + "mp3" + "Band name" -htm -html -php -asp)

You can change mp3 to whatever file type you are looking for.
