German Opening Strategies: Update for Online Play

PREFACE: I am really a rather rotten player. I write this not because I enjoy any good measure of skill at the game of Diplomacy, but rather because I enjoy writing.

Drinking Age
What is the drinking age in your society?
This is the most illogical part of America. An 18-year old has the competence to vote for President but not to drink a beer.

quick question
Hi, I used to play many many years ago and now I am back to webdiplomacy. Just a quick question, how many phases do you need to miss for the game to kick you out?

Apologies if this question had been asked before but I couldnt find it in FAQs.

Dear Krellin, who do you hate?
I'd like to start a game with some cool lefties/decent people, and figured the quickest way to work out who to invite was to ask you who you hated most. At the moment I'm thinking a game with Tolstoy, Major Mitchell, Thucy, Cachimbo, Hecks and Bo-sox would be fun. Did I miss anyone?

Clearly not. Though reading through threads I'd missed I'd also be willing to invite Jack_Klein into it, if he were willing to play.

mendax - you are sadly mistaken. I don't hate anyone. Just because I disagree with someone....sometimes in a seemingly heated linguistic style...doesn't mean that I hate anyone or am angry in the least. But thanks for spamming the forum with my name yet again.

Time for the mods to step in.

I'd gladly help anyone of those chaps if they were in my town and their care broke down. I'd sit down a nice meal and introduce them to my family. I'd buy them a beer and sip a club soda with them.

It's kind of sad of you to think that heated debate = hate.

Some of the greatest poltical rivals were...are...great friends.

Bill Clinton....friend of the Bush's...damn near adopted son, as the ex-Pres's do great work together.

I rest my case
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
08 Aug 13 UTC
yes, thanks indeed Mendax, you have me agreeing with krellin
I do not "hate" krellin nor do I "hate" Dwaugnar
they are just "naughty boys" who need to have their heads banged together,
but I cannot talk about ongoing games,
I would say that as a hypothetical, that if I thought it to be in the best interests of the nation I was playing that I would make an alliance with either of them,
and hope they would do the same ( of course they would do it, so that they could then backstab me, not that I would backstab either of them, ho ho ho )

you should be able to separate what goes on in the forum from what goes on in games

so for example I think that Obiwanbenkenobiwankenben and I would be able to leave
any disagreement we have about what is Shakespeare's best work out of our
Diplomacy game playing - -
- - he would probably say it is "Hamlet" whereas I would be more a
"Taming of the Shrew" or "The Tempest" is best type of chap
& any dispute we might have in a game of Diplomacy over who gets Denmark would not be because Shakespeare tells us there is something rotten going on there
Emac (0 DX)

"naughty boys need to have have their heads banged..."

A Freudian pedophilia slip?
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
08 Aug 13 UTC
perhaps in your sick & perverted mind Emac

if I'd been discussing "girls of eighteen, sexually knowing...."

( that's paraphrasing a Who lyric from "Quadrophenia" ---
"girls of fifteen, sexually knowing,
the ushers are sniffing, ...' )
so you can see that I regard 18 & a presence of a vagina as defining limits
it's a long, long time since my pubescent innocence when I fantasised about Aqua Marina, the puppet in Stingray as the ideal of sexual desire ---- a chicky babe who could not talk to humans but could talk to sea creatures and could swim like a fish-- the
ideal surfie chick -- but as I changed from pubescence to adult I realised that a puppet lacks a proper christian vagina & my "tastes changed"

good luck Emac with your maturation
Tolstoy isn't a leftie, I'd substitute Jack_Klein if you want pure lefties.

It's Mod time .... he's not a hater
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
08 Aug 13 UTC
@ Jynx, the descritprive phrase "proper christian...."
is used in Patrick O'Brien's "Aubrey / Maturin" series of novels
eg "Master and Commander", "Post Captain", "HMS Surprise" et al
& reflects early 19th Century common usage / attitudes
so you have attitudes of what is right & proper eg "proper christian gentleman"
or what is not, eg "wicked heathen savages" that reflect the bias of English society
so I suppose you could always use the phrase
"like a proper christian vagina complete with hymen rather than some wicked heathen
genitalia full of corruption" to differentiate between the pure and impure
but the phrase has a general usage, eg
"a proper christian motorised charabanc rather than some wicked heathen automobile"
"a proper christian truck with a bonnet rather than some wicked heathen cab-over"
good luck

Also, I'll point out that beyond not hating me, I don't even think Krellin dislikes me. We disagree frequently and at times strenuously, but at the end of the day I think either of us would buy the other a beer given the chance.

The world needs more people capable of friendly disagreement, even intense friendly disagreement. My sister is a right wing, Palin-voting, bible-thumping, fire-and-brimstone social conservative who would criminalize extramarital sex if she could, let alone gay marriage. I'm a far left, Mother Jones-reading, LBJ-admiring, Kucinich-voting liberal wackjob who at one time was a literal card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America. And still we love each other. We should all endeavor to stop caricaturing each other as idiots and give each other a little room to listen.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
08 Aug 13 UTC
@ Emac,
you are the one seeing all these alledged comments about boys
& coming up with some perverted implications
this I would suggest indicates your obsessions ratherthan mine
I note that different persons see different things,
such as Jynx who focusses straight away on the proper christian vagina
beauty is in the eye of the beholder
my eyes ( and probably Jynx's ) see beauty in a proper christian vagina
you seem to have a differing set of values, or if you are trying to provoke me,
then you will have to do better than being tedious & unimaginative
this site has some really talented insult artists, so far you are not even close to their abilities

And for christ's sake, Krellin has *said* in a lot of places that he wants to start being more civil. I think that's real growth. Would my fellow Liberals please, for the sake of us all, give him the benefit of the doubt, stop baiting him, and try to support him in this quest for civility?

well if this was meant to be a bait / bash krellin thread
then it's had just as much or more comments refuting that notion
& showing krellin some support
than comments baiting or bashing krellin
& Jynx and I have diverted into a discussion on "proper christian vaginas"
& Emac's tried to provoke me & ignored the idea of krellin baiting completely

mendax may have been having a joke ( & perhaps in poor taste )
but if he was seriously trying to have a go at krellin then it's failed absolutely

It was actually meant as a way to find out who the decent people around here are, in order to set up a game with them. I don't quite know why nobody seems to think that this was my intention, given that I said that that was my intention. Like, it really wasn't hidden information.

Perhaps hate was the wrong word, but it seemed that the easiest way to do this was to find out who Krellin had the most strenuous disagreements. I will point out however that I didn't refer to the return relationship in any way.

As an aside, I fully accept the grammar correction - I really should have known better than that.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Aug 13 UTC
Actually, "hate" was the word you used becuase it was the word in your heart, mendax...it is most likely a reflection of *your* feelings in the aftermath of a strong disagreement..and you are trying to project it on to everyone else.

Even in your little explanation here, you try to suggest that those that I disagree with are decent people, and those that agree with me are indecent people.

Wow...need I say more? I trust you are excluding yourself from you game of decent people...
mendax (321 D)
08 Aug 13 UTC
Erm, I only used hate to refer to you, and even then I have accepted that it's incorrect, so you can stop lying right there.

For what it's worth, there has been strong correlation between those you disagree with and those who are decent people. The other direction wasn't even suggested at all, and was not relevant to anything, so I don't quite know where you think you are going with that. Either way, this thread has been useful in giving me the information that I was interested in, for which I thank everyone involved.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Aug 13 UTC
"decent people"....see, there you go again. Wow...bigot much?

I guarantee you I can find a number of people with whom I have *strong* disagreements who will also vouch for my human decency, my little friend. There are some amongst us who take heated debate and a flame war here and there for what it is...and then move on with life.

I think Thucy is a decent human being, truth be known. Probably give you the shirt off his back. I think he bonkers in the old brain box and I think his reasons for giving you his shirt will be a little off kilter...but he's a decent fellow none the less.

You...I'm not so sure. You seem to be having difficult time separating fact from fiction, flame wars from fact and are just leaping like a prancing ballerina on the judgmental bandwagon.

No...your use fo the word "hate" as directed towards me was from your heart, my friend, and that suggestion is based upon the admission in your defensive post that you judge me "indecent"...and likewise you judge anyone who agrees with me as "indecent".

tsk tsk..

The Libertarian Rift
It is often claimed that divisions in the GOP run clearly along statist/libertarian lines, but this is frequently unclear in practice, as there are a good many other divisions and alignments as well (as in the Democratic Party). Here is a particularly clean example of the former, however.

Replacement for Summer League Games
Hi all. I am looking for someone who would be willing to replace one of the seven members in our Summer League. She abruptly decided to give up Diplomacy and her departure has halted our league play.

If you are interested in replacing someone who is in a great position in the League message me and I can send you more information. Thanks.

Hey Krellin
Could you warn me whenever you read a good argument against you in one of the many threads? I was thinking we might have to recruit some secretaries who can filter out arguments like Kafkatraps, complete fiction, partial fiction, anything including the word nigger, so we can focus on the arguments that can be considered worthy of your time. Post interest in becoming secretary in this thread and I'll get you a form.

How DARE Soldiers Fighting Religious Fanatics Not Be Religious?!
http://news.yahoo.com/u-military-problem-atheists-065000534.html
I find that ironic in the US Military's case (for the above-stated reason)...but it's an issue that crops up every now and again, people thinking that a lack of religious belief MUST mean you're "at risk," or "depressed" or a danger to yourself or others...how about we're not convinced by the "evidence" for God and think that Religion kills (and encourages killing at that) and leave us be?

* Are you afraid of clowns? Grown men in makeup doing socially unacceptable things, often to children? (Like touching, squirting them with water, etc. while hiding behind a mask?) Or are they innocuous fun?
