CDs and the collapse of empires
Just wanted to observe how frustrating it is when a player becomes less committed to the game when they look to be in trouble. What can possibly be done to stop this ruining end games for everyone else?

(Also, someone (ghug?) mentioned not long ago a game where Germany recovered from 2 centres to solo. I can't find it again, can someone point me in the right direction?)

Do you think if I posted 20 different "ban me threads" that the mods would?
If yes, do you think they would ban me before I successfully made 20 threads?

The Deathcount of Wall Street
I was thinking of doing some research on how many people died by Wall Street practices (through sucking companies out causing unemployment, profiting from and at the cost of pension funds ruining people's pensions, etc, etc.).

Does anyone have an idea of where to start and how to go about this?

How come there are never any quick games on the American Empire or World Diplomacy maps?
I really want to play one, it seems fun, but it seems nobody ever creates/joins them. Why is this?

Gunboat Etiquette
After several games of anon gunboat coming and going with not enough players, I finally had one start today. It was my first time, I've never played anon gunboat before. Well, I was Russia and in the first turn England, Germany and italy NMRd. Then England and Germany went CD and Italy finally started making moves.

but everyone entered cancel, then cancel and draw. I eventually bowed to the peer pressure and hit cancel. So, is it just common courtesy in that situation to hit cancel along with everyone else?

Oh, forgot to mention it was a five minute per turn live game.

Yes, it is common etiquette. When games take so long, 2-4 hours often, playing a non-game where one or more players didn't show up is annoying and unfufilling. Let their NMRs and CDs hurt their RR and then draw/cancel. In the future, join games with RR requirements or higher points.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
19 Jul 15 UTC
Note that it's considered to be good etiquette by a portion of the population
1) not everyone agrees
2) it's not enforceable per se (although two players being banned in the same game you can ask the mods to cancel, two players going CD just naturally by being AFK is not)
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

Generally speaking, I am in the "PUNISH THEM" school when it comes to first turn NMRs in live gunboat games. I like to play until the irresponsible bastards have CD'd and then Draw the game so their RR is hammered, as it should be.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

Jeff: Cancelling a game doesn't remove the penalty from their RR. There's no need to draw instead of cancel for RR reasons.

I've asked the question of more experienced players in games who refused to either vote draw or cancel...generally the answer comes back that they used to vote draw but not any more. They got tired of watching other stubborn people stay in unbalanced games picking up the easy points. So over time they decided to do the same.

What would be the difference between drawing and canceling?
Check_mate (100 D)

I believe I am right in saying that if you draw a game, those remaining players (you must wait until a player has shown as "left" rather than just "Missed the last phase") will share the Dip points, whereas if you cancel, it is as if the game has never existed.

Personally, I will always vote "Draw" in these situations as opposed to "Cancel" because I believe that those who have bothered to stick with the game deserve to share out the Dip points of those who CD'd.

Draw splits the pot among the remaining players.
Cancel returns the points to everyone and removes the game from completed games.

Why so many gunboat games ?
I don't really have a problem with gunboat but I thought this game was designed for people to talk between themselves and scheme and form alliances in advance and fool your allies telling them you will, for example, support them somewhere but end up attacking them instead. For a few weeks I've seen only gunboat (live games)

Variant idea!
Every Spring, only fleets can move. Every Fall, only armies can move. Convoys are allowed in Fall, even if the fleets involved already moved in Spring.
