World Diplomacy IX: Map discrepancy
I note that on the map for World Diplomacy IX, the Bering Strait is labelled BrS on the right, and BSt on the left, the main variant map: http://www.variantbank.org/results/rules/w/world8-2.gif

Lists it as: BrS, it should reflect this.

gunboat strategy.
italies why are you always so dumb. what appeals to you so much about opening against austria. why cant one italy even one ever in a gunboat try to actually ally with austria. in the last like 10 games ive played her italy has opened against austria. you almost always end up sucking as a result while allying with austria often fares so much better.

Pause Etiquette Question/Opinions
I'd like to hear from the community regarding a pause etiquette issue. If a game is paused because someone is unable to log on for a certain time period, is it wrong to communicate with the other powers? I have always felt that it is unfair to discuss tactics while someone else is not there. It seems underhanded. On the other hand, I worry that I am putting myself at a disadvantage if other powers talk during a pause and I do not. I'd like to hear others thoughts about this.

Player needed for gunboat game to fill 6SC France in Spring 1904. Good position, no turns missed (CD is result of a player being banned, not from missing turns).

Looking for live game (classic) tonight at 7:00 PST (-8)
Sorry I am new to this forum, I used to play on "play diplomacy" but they lack live games. IF there is a better place to post game requests I apologize in advance.

Do NOT Post Cheating Accusations in the Forum
I'm really sick of that crap. It's not that hard to email the mods, and you'll get a much more expedient response by doing so.

And while I'm at it, use the "Advertise Your Live Games Here" thread for just that. Don't start new threads. Some people still don't get that simple idea.

My apology for not making clear the possibility of its being a constructed language.

BB has a grammar, phonology, vocabulary, and everything required to be a functional language. I could go into loads of detail, but I won't.

By "not quite done," I mean I am writing stuff in the language to look for kinks and correct them, a process which I have not yet finished.
Example, 1st class masc. noun suffixes:
sg. pl.
Nom. -ys -ap
Gen. -y -ap
Dat. -o -op
Acc. -ym -yp
Loc. -a -ap
By a priori, I mean I'm basing this off of a particular group of languages, thinking of it as a distant cousin of theirs.

Sentence by sentence translation of the remarkably un-nuanced account of the civil war:

Go pohea, ye Aberyhy.
There was a nation of Americans (Was people, she Americans)

Hlutap hahaba subyp, yt hlutap do [hahaba subyp]. [that should be just "...yt hlutap do."]
Some had slaves, but some did not. (some had slaves, and some not [had slaves])

Zuyhatha bibap alyp.
They hated each other. (hated each the other group)

Torohyap Aberyhy, yr hahaba subyp, hlédedyza, rusen Aberyho.
The southern Americans, who were the slave holders, wanted to leave America. (southern Americans, they had slaves, wanted to leave America)

Zutsuhya sohyap u.
The northern Americans did not like that. (Dislike northerns it)

Do hlédedyza.
They did not want it (not wanted).

Hod bahaa bibap alyp. [bibap should be bybap]
So, a war started. (because of that, warred each on the others)

Arz abyap to bahaa.
The war lasted four years. (four years along warred)

Azdam sohyap hahaba trusym.
In the end, the northerners won. (At end, northerns had victory)

Baedam eda lo pohea.
After the war, the country remained intact. (At/from warring one was nation)

Azdym.
The End. (End) [Azdam and azdym are variants of the same word]

Oh, see that's no fun. You're supposed to give us just two paragraphs (English and BB) and let us figure out how it works.

"After the war, the country remained intact. (At/from warring one was nation)"

Is this really the best way to write this? It seems like the BB version is very ambiguous.

@Firewolf, i guess that answers both of my points in great detail, i particularly like that the klingon word for bridge is 'meH'

@Baumh: cool language, and it's purpose? not that i have anything against re-making the wheel, it's a great learning tool, and i'm sure every translator should create their own language and become fluent in it!

@ baumhaeuer: "As a matter of fact, it is a conlang of my devising..."

Not a "GENUINE" language in my book, then. A language you've just made up in your bedroom is not a proper language.

Apart from being slightly peeved at you for wasting our time by claiming this was a genuine language, when clearly it isn't, I have one question:

Why are you doing this? Previous attempts to create a new language artificially (Esperanto, Volapuk, Eurolengo, Solresol) have failed. We already have too many languages on the planet - creating additional ones is not the answer. Why do you perservere?

What a massive waste of time...

People with an interest in linguistics make up languages (proper languages, whatever that means). I suppose they do it for the intellectual challenge. The OP should should have told us earlier on though.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
03 Feb 11 UTC
The OP didn't ask you to do anything, you all just saw a riddle and were interested. One attempt actually got pretty close. (with describing words as adjectives and verbs... seemed pretty accurate, which suggest meaning could actually be attributed to this language, and hence a solution was possible)

If a solution wasn't possible then it's not a very good riddle, on the other hand it was entirely possible to figure out what some of the words meant, and derive further meaning from that... who knows where this would have gone if Baum hadn't told us the answer (shame on you!)

Please be responsible for your choices, and the things you happen to be interested in!
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
03 Feb 11 UTC
To make myself clearer, orathaic, the point at which Baumhaeur wasted our time was not by posting the OP, but when he assured us it was a "genuine" langauge.
baumhaeuer (245 D)

Exactly! For fun and intellectual stimulation, something difficult to get on TV nowadays (don't worry, I'm leaning ones that people aside from me speak). Thanks for the defense, ora.

And it's to provide place names for a novel my brother is planning on writing. I told him that babble names in fantasy novels typically sound lame, and he should have me develop a language to avoid that problem. Only the nouns and adjectives were really necessary, but I got carried away...

@abge:

That's a special construction combining the loc. case and the progressive/habitual past tense. It comes out poorly in English because English is not designed to do that.

The Russian Revolution, 1917
I've got a class on the subject above, and I've got a 10-12 page paper to write in the same topic. I was wondering if the webdip community has any ideas on what I could write about. Just keep in mind that it needs to be at least ten pages and the scope is revolutionary activity in 1917 only, the Civil war in 1918 and later is off-limits. That being said, any suggestions welcome.

Pre-Pause for US Storm?
So pretty much the whole northern US is getting whacked by a storm, and I know I'm not the only person who might be without power for a good long time. Perhaps those of us in the path should vote pause, with the understanding that the other players should also pause if we vanish for a couple of days.

Leisurely Playing the Game of Diplomacy
Perhaps it's just me, but do some people take this game way too seriously? Here I am, playing Diplomacy for fun, countlessly running into people, other players, that I can't help but to assume have a dictionary nearby whenever they play the game. Intimidation via vernacular, if you will. And to be honest, I find this concept incredibly humorous. Anybody else?

Pick up Italy in a locked 24 hr low-stakes WTA game?

Italy is at 7 SCs but about to hit 5. The players in the game have been very dependable -- no other NMRs up to 1905. A good bet for a decent player who enjoys negotiation. The password is playfair.
