MAGA - what a great speech! Future looks bright.
Must be exciting to be an american today. Prosperity and optimism and winning are so much more fun than divisive bullying and globalist theft and war with russia. Plus Barron is hilarious. Glorious stuff! Good on you democracy.

Chat on mobile bug?
When I open the in-game messaging window on mobile (Chrome, iOS) my country messages have been "resetting" to a past (earlier) message spontaneously, forcing me to scroll down in the tiny chat window to read the latest message. Anyone else seeing this?

1v1 Showdown Stats
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DhYZtnNINPxREZGAVYY2vnFZtPPNmto180cUMNCJXfc/edit?usp=sharing

It's still very early on, but these will be updated as the 1v1 Showdown progresses.
captainmeme (1632 DMod)

Bear in mind that it is a fairly small sample size - by the end of the tournament, there should be somewhere between 440 and 660 games in here; still not massive, but it should give a rough idea of how well each opening did overall. Also, the names given are not official, just the ones I use to refer to the openings. There are a number of unnamed openings too, so any name suggestions for those are welcome.

France/Austria stats are on separate sheets - you can switch between them using the France/Austria buttons at the bottom.

I'm curious - Where do the opening names come from?
Also, we need to start a movement in support of Please Kill Me Faster. It is clearly the best opening, and captainmeme is posting alternate statistics to discredit this most powerful of strategies.

I looked at the sets that were decided by a tie-breaker, 11 so far if I didn't miss any.

The tie-breaker game was won 9 times by France, one time by Austria and one draw awarded to France by tournament rules. I hope I get France if I ever have to tie-break.
xorxes (31128 D)
27 Jan 17 UTC
The tied games were 6 F F and five A A, so I don't get how overall Austria is winning more games. There must be an excess of Austria wins in the sets not yet completed.
Interesting that moves to Bohemia seem to be successful
Nikov (410 D)
27 Jan 17 UTC
Moving to Bohemia is arguably better than moving to Tyrolia, as it allows you to move north towards Kiel and Berlin faster. Of course, this assume that France doesn't move to Piedmont. If he does, you have a problem.
There's also the issue of the Bohemia starts having much smaller sample sizes than the Tyrolia starts.
I question the value of a move to tyrolia, yes it can be devastating if it works out, but with the early builds you are forgoing it could be equally devastating if it doesn't.
*move to tyrolia from France in the first two years
I will move to Tyrolia as France 100% of the time
captainmeme (1632 DMod)
27 Jan 17 UTC
@Xorx - All 4 sets with an ongoing tiebreaker match were AA, and of the sets that only have 1 game completed, 4 more were won by Austria than by France. I'm not sure if that makes up for the discrepancy... I may have entered something incorrectly. I'll check when I have the time.

It locks up so many Austrian units. He has to prevent retreats to Bohemia, Vienna, Trieste, Venice, and Munich

Also, as Goldfinger said, we came up with the names when I was making a 1v1 Opening Strategy guide video with him. The audio didn't come out massively well which is why it's not up yet, but hopefully it'll be out sometime soon.

The names were initially the following, I shortened them for the spreadsheet:

Belgian Waffle (Going all out for Belgium)
Spanish Alpine (Going for Spain and over the alps)
Swiss Split (Splitting your units up in a perfect North/South line, with Switzerland being one of the provinces separating them)
Maginot Opening (Same as the Maginot Opening in Classic Diplomacy)

Italian Gambit (Sending all armies towards Italy)
Greek Hedgehog (Due to every unit going in a different direction - however, since it's fairly different from the Classic Hedgehog, I renamed it Porcupine)
Anti-Alpine (Supposedly the counter to Alpine and Swiss openings, although stats are not showing that right now)

The 'Please Kill Me' opening names came from a discussion with a bunch of Mafia players about Spanish openings :)

The French stats are interesting. I initially thought the goal for France would be to get fleets into the Med as soon as possible...but given that BRE-ENG is better it looks like the real first fleet goal is to keep the Austrian out of Scandinavia.
Claesar (4665 D)
27 Jan 17 UTC
Or to use that fleet to secure Germany from Baltic.
TrPrado (461 D)
27 Jan 17 UTC
You only need like 2 or 3 fleets up north though, since Austria can't compete for those seas.
2 at most, one more to seize English scs at the end maybe
peterwiggin (15158 D)
28 Jan 17 UTC
It'd be interesting to see how the openings compare to each other. So a table with French openings in the rows and Austrian openings in the columns.
TrPrado (461 D)

What about second move of the game? France sneaking into Tyrolia is a classic with a 50% win rate for me.

There's a fancy little opening well known as "the NMR" among WebDip veterans. Surprised its not listed as surely some players in the tournament have tried it, to varying degrees of complete failure.
slypups (1889 D)

And to echo Orson Scott Card's hegemon, I'm very curious to see the stats on different openings versus each other. I'm still trying to figure out what would be the best counter-openings.

Is Trump manipulating foreign currency markets?
Trump makes announcements that affect the Mexican Peso (usually negatively) and yet his financials are a mystery. Is it possible that he is personally trading on the markets that he can influence so much or am I being paranoid?

Last turn of a certain dead player can capture province?
Consider Autumn turn. A player has a single original supply center. His last unit is somewhere else.
His last supply center is captured. He will be dead when Fall begins. However, he is in a position where he can capture one of my many supply centers. Will I lose that supply center in the Fall if he moves to that providence?

Dip Directions?
In episode 11 of the Diplomacy Games podcast Kaner and I discussed longevity aspects and risk management of sites like webDip and vDip to ensure they grow and reduce the chances of going down (either technically speaking or perceptions of IP infringement). We said we'd create a thread for this for others to contribute. What do you reckon?
