Ray Tensing Indicted for Murder of Samuel DuBose
http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/07/29/publish/30830777/

I'm glad Tensing had a body camera on. I'm glad the grand jury indicted him. Unless there's something acutely relevant that's off-camera and missing here, I'll be glad when he gets convicted of murder.

There is something I just don't get, concerning in-game messaging
I have noticed that in-game messaging can be completely disabled. Obviously that would not have any reason to be so without "Anonymous Players" enabled at the same time. So my question is this : What's the point with games having Anon and no in-game messaging? The whole point of Diplomacy is gone. I really don't get the appeal, because I have noticed that there is a number of games with those parameters.

I'm considering doing something and I'm wondering how to go about it.
I can't complete the action completely on my own, but I do want to be in control of what I'm doing, and keep all the money I'll probably make as a result of the activity. I haven't defined which action I'm considering taking, but I know that people successfully carry out activities all over the world, nearly every day. Can anyone give me advice?

In Honor of Sandgoose's Baby I See It Fitting That We Should Help Pick Out A Name
So, knowing it's a boy, there's no better time to start than now. Offer a suggestion or repeat someone else's suggestion and add a +1 after it. For example, Josh is a great name. If someone else liked that best, they would put Josh +1 or increment the counter. I'm sure SG will name it based on the most +1's. After all, he's a webdipper at heart.

Reason for Amazon Gift Card?
Amazon sent me a 25USD Gift Card to me, *at my work*, and I have no idea why. I've checked my Amazon account, I've checked my email account, absolutely nothing about me receiving one, much less at my work. Nothing but "Thank You" with the card. Thoughts? Known way of knowing?

Do people think this is the first evidence from the long-missing Malaysian air flight? Personally, I do. There is only one unaccounted-for 777 in the world, and this appears to be a 777 part. Discuss as developments come in.

Players that request to withdrawal from a tournament/league game should be...
Subbed back INTO the game at the end IF and ONLY IF, the new player was not happy with his or her result. This sounds crazy but it just might work. First, is it possible to do this. Second, what do you guys think? Would it help out or cause more problems?
My thoughts are 1) that if players know they will still take the GR hit from a loss will not have any metagame reason's for wanting to quit. 2) quality subs would be more willing to jump in and help out if they new there was no risk in doing so.

This is an interesting idea - I'll bring this up with the moderators and see what they think and whether it's plausible.

This would, of course, allow a sub to tank a game without consequence. It also seems odd for a game which someone didn't actually play to be considered in GR.
On the second point the player DID play the game. Presumably they started the game, they ran their great power into the ground, and then they got out of dodge and laughed at the sucker who jumped in and attempted to save the day. On the first point I would only recommend this for leagues/tourneys where high quality games are being played and the chance that someone who tank are minimal. But again if I know I can gain GR points I'm going to try my hardest.

I agree that players who quit mid game should be "given" a loss somehow, either as Caballo suggests here, or (as I suggested in thread to Goldfinger on league feedback) by mods setting up a fake game with dummy accounts and inserting the player who quit mid game to take a loss on his record and on his GR. Not starting the next game in a league series should be an acceptable way to drop out of a league, but quiting mid game seems quite common in tournaments when players find themselves in desperate situations, and then replacements come in to take over desperate positions and usually end up taking the "loss".

Wait, are we taking this seriously?

GR and points already, clearly ARE NOT made for or contain the existential capacity for dealing with Tournaments / SRGs / etc. It's not like we do special shit for the Leagues, webDiplomacy Tournament, etc to accomodate their scoring systems being different from GR.

I think it's incredibly dangerous to allow anyone, even subs, to not take their result, and I think it's incredibly silly to try to force shenanigans and convuluted logistics to preserve the GR/points of a sub, when those GR/points are highly flawed and naive in the first place. On multiple levels this seems like a poor implementation.

I'm sorry CB, I love you, and I hate tournament drop outs, but this isn't how I hope we go about it.
Wusti (884 D)

Well when I was asked to sub in leagues I just did it and said yes without even looking at the games to try and help out. The impact on my record and GR means that there is no way I'll ever do it again. So it depends whether you want a helping culture, or cater for the fucktards doesn't it?
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

Excellent false dichotomy for your poor play and decisions, I'll give it a 7/8.
Wusti (884 D)

Fucktards it is Valis :P
I agree that the system is slightly messed up. But as Wusti points out he basically took a big hit on his rating for no reason and as it stands he will not be "helping" out anymore. I don't think we want to have less subs. Unless we are prepared to tell those that want to quit just have to CD and imbalance the board. Perhaps that is the answer. We just accept that CDs happen (even in tournaments) and move on.
@ "I'm sorry CB, I love you, and I hate tournament drop outs, but this isn't how I hope we go about it."

I'm not saying it's a "good" solution, just trying to think outside the box for what can be done (easily) before a new and better system is created.

Subs can also be held accountable for their results while mid-game drop-outs are held accountable and given a loss "by mods setting up a fake game with dummy accounts and inserting the player who quit mid game to take a loss on his record and on his GR.

If mid game drop outs are taken more seriously, subs would not be needed as often to fill desperate situations.
I do think subs need to be held accountable but setting up a fake game seems like more work than it's worth which is why it likely hasn't been done yet. Perhaps just a fixed penalty of some type (withdraw on your record) and % lost of GR points or something for those that leave/CD and then leave the subs as they currently are but have a sub games separate from normal games such that you have a GR and a Sub GR. Again both of these are more work than my initial "Band Aid" solution.
chluke (12292 D(G))

@CB. Yes, a "penalty" to GR and points seems easier and may be the discouragement needed to prevent so many mid-game league drop outs when a player's position becomes unfavorable.

@goldfinger -- good idea by CB there. Hope you're reading.
