And I Thought Texas Threatening Secession Was Good...
http://news.yahoo.com/pro-gun-rights-us-petition-deport-piers-morgan-130319681.html

Seriously? This is what 31,000+ people spend their time doing? Get a life… none of us are trying to deport Wayne LaPierre and he has a tad more impact than Piers Morgan.

Diplomacy world cup
I know there is a webdip specific world cup; but there has been a regular (every four year) nations world cup, for the last 8 years.

Another discussion about pauses <yawn>
I thought this topic had been disussed to death. Pauses had to be voted by everyone to apply. However, I now learn that the mods will pause a game that has six votes only if they email the 7th member and he doesn't respond. I'm happy with all 7 or 6 plus an unreplied to email rule, but would like some clarity

My New Favorite Bible Passage
11 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.
--Deuteronomy 25:11-12 (That's quite possibly the most horrible-yet-hilarious passage I've ever read that's meant to be taken seriously...can anyone...erm, defend it? At all? If so...you're the most amazing lawyer ever.) xD

When to attack a buffer state
I can never get this right.

Last night I played a game in which I was France. I was on good terms with Italy who was busy fighting Turkey who turned out to be allied with Russia to the point of servility. Each of those powers (Italy & Turkey) had about 6 SCs. Russia had 5 and was hemmed in by the English in the north.

I was on the cusp of putting away Germany and had an England who was getting jittery about having me behind his lines. Italy's rearend was completely undefended and I had invested heavily in armies in order to build up political support among Italy & England.
My decision to go for the kill vs Italy wound up hurting me badly, as Turkey was the main beneficiary and I didn't have the fleets to stop its Meditteranean expansion. Italy ended up getting cut in half in one turn and spent the rest of its time keeping me from controlling the Western Mediterranean & Iberia, while Italy quickly fell under Turkish control.

My question is generally, when is the right time to pick off a buffer state that is impeding your expansion?

Well you should have talked to the short stack Russia and helped him against England. But it takes a competent player to see those opportunities. The only time you ever attack a buffer state is if his other opponent is weaker than you and you are in.position to grab over half of him with a good stab. Otherwise gobfor the big player and get the little guys to join you.

This was a fluid situation with the balance of power changing rapidly. There was no clear dominant power.
In the early stages, Russia quickly marched into Scandinavia and took the early the lead. Germany was preoccupied with fighting France & England. I had good relations with England in order to allow England to act as a buffer state for me vs Russia.
Turkey, Italy, and Russia quickly crushed Austria and were fighting over the spoils.
Italy had its forces completely arrayed against the East.
