webDip music
Do you guys listen to any music when playing, especially during live games? If so, what do you prefer for songs/artists/genres?

Five-way game?
Hey, sorry to ask (as I assume this is addressed somewhere), but is there a way to elect to play a five player game (as in, I have four friends I want to play with).
Other sites allow this, but I like the webDiplomacy interface so I'd prefer to do it here if I can.

Obama: Ruthless or Clueless?
One of the big stories of Obama’s time in office was the death of Osama, which was widely regarded as a good thing despite no real effort being made to go down the arrest and trial route more normally associated with the good guys. Still, the way he was found raised a few eyebrows.
Octavious (2701 D)

The CIA sent an agent under the guise of a medical man working on Pakistan’s polio immunisation campaign. Ironically the Taliban have for years been causing problems to this campaign by saying it was a Western plot to sterilise Muslims, but thankfully wiser heads were prevailing. By actually using this cover, however, the CIA gave the Taliban message a lot of credibility.

Some days ago eight polio workers in Pakistan were murdered, and the campaign halted. We can now expect the polio epidemic to march onwards unhindered, possible spreading back into India and leading to many more cases.

So the question is this. Was Obama aware of what the CIA was up to, and simply considered the lives of children and aid workers a small price to pay for finding Osama, or did he play a very limited role indeed in the death of Obama with little knowledge or influence in the actions of the CIA?

Ruthless or clueless?

I'm not sure if, if he knew about this, his actions were ruthless. He can't really help it that the Taliban are a bunch of lunatics who probably feel that western music comes from the devil (or any music for that matter) and who believe in flying into civilian buildings with airplanes.
I believe a "whatever it takes approach" is quite acceptable here.

How do you expect anyone on this forum to be able to answer your question with any certainty, Octavious? I have no idea what level of micro-management the President is able to excercise over the day-to-day running of CIA operations. How would I?
Octavious (2701 D)
22 Dec 12 UTC
I don't expect much certainty in any part of life, Jamie. But political types live and die by the perception the people have of them, and people can state with absolute clarity what it is they percieve.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
22 Dec 12 UTC
Ok then. My guess would be that the President wouldn't have known the exact details of the plan - ie he may not have known that the polio campaign would be used for cover.
Octavious (2701 D)

Obama did make a point of telling the secret services that torture was a bad thing and they should really stop it. He gave the impression that he was going to at least attempt to run things like a decent person with basic human principles would. It strikes me that using polio staff as a cover is no different whatsoever to the likes of Saddam and Gadaffi using human shields to defend military bases. If it was intentional, fair enough... I will have to change my view of him. If not, it's simply not good enough to claim ignorance when you know full well the CIA has been acting darly for some time.

the first 2 aren't even mutually exclusive. He could be ruthless AND clueless. Sadam and Kim Jung ill come to mind.

Personally I don't think he really gives a shit about anything outside his political career. So that can lead to ruthlessness for sure. But he also seems clueless most of the time.

+1 mapleleaf… can't blame him for being the guy that Congress throws under the bus every time.
any tipping off of sources and trying to "Capture and try" Osama based on extradition ran the risk of Pakistani supporters tipping him off. It is also fact that the SEAL team, from members of the team itself was under orders to capture Bin Laden if feasible. I disagree with your premise in this case. The mistake with the polio team is more releasing that information. The response to the press should have been "we have his body, you have x number of days to take hair samples etc, then we are burying his ass in the ocean" and left the part about the polio doctors remain a secret. If anyone wanted to know details about the mission let them FOIA and wait 15 years.

The CIA used to have news reporter as a cover for years until the press had too many real reporters captured and tortured as mistaken spies. You are always going to have people killed because they have the same occupation as a cover.

You don't see cooks being killed after it was reported that Julia Child worked for the OSS during WW II.

question re: convoys & support
If someone is convoying an army to a new location, and wants to support that move, do they need to support move form the army's location, or support move from the last sea location in the convoy chain?

Well played everyone. Fortunately France only dropped when a draw was certain. Austria was a very tough opponent, but with the start I had as Turkey and no way to coordinate with Russia and Italy I was able to blitz through the defenses. Was never really sure why so little progress could be made in the west.

Banning recently?
I returned to this site a few weeks ago after about a year's hiatus, and it appears to me that there has been a lot of banning of accounts recently. In at least three of the five games that I've been playing in the past week at least one player has been banned mid-game. Are the mods clamping down on metagaming or is this something that's just become standard fare while I've been away?

Solo-win / Draws
As somebody who's used to the original Dip rules, I always thought of Dip having one winner only. There is no second place. But here, I seem to have to get used to draws as a regular game ending. So I'm curious, what criteria do people have for draws? When to draw? When to solo?

Alright, so say a fleet from Player A moves onto the coast of a territory. At the same time, an army from Player B moves into that same territory. Will they bounce? Or will the army take control? Or is it something else entirely?

They prove to me over and over again that they simply aren't as good as the team they belong with. It's not just the big three American sports; hell, it's not just sports in the United States. Which superstar trade was the worst? And no, it's not Dwight Howard - not yet at least.
