Nigee -- it's called a *thought starter*. Do *YOU* want the surgeon that graduated bottom of his class cutting you open? Or do you want the guy cutting you open that, at a minimum, met the initial standards of a program? AA says the guy that didn't meet the standards get's a pass...meaning someone who isn't qualified might be cutting you open.

You think that is a good idea?

Serious topic - illustrated with albeit absorb "real-world" examples - meant to actually inspire you to think, and not just spew your political/ideoloigcal tag-lines.

Of course - when confronted with the truth - that AA has *real world consequences* - all you can do is attack and not address the topic - demonstrating that you simply can't refute the implied argument that AA is potentially a *dangerous* social policy.

I would not be going to have surgery in a strip mall and a top hospital wouldn't be hiring someone who graduated at the bottom of his class. The person would also be weeded out during internship, residency, etc.

They should start licensing the practice of medicine. That way schools could offer opportunities and the public could be reassured about their surgeons.

Krellin, do you genuinely believe that it's entirely merit that gets someone into a school like Harvard, or that it's exclusively those who are unable to meet minimum standards who don't get into medical or other professional schools? I can't imagine anyone would think something that, well, dumb.

Krellin - In the UK our discrimination laws laws prohibit any 'positive discrimination'. It is illegal to advertise for a woman plumber for example. Whilst I generally support this, there is an argument for seeking to advance the prospects of those who may have been discriminated against in the past. For example, we still have a mainly white male House of Commons. We should steer clear of party all-woman or all-black shortlists, but that doesn't mean the parties shouldn't try to engage woman and black people and assist them to become electable.

The best person should always get the job, but there is nothing wrong with trying to support different groups so that they can apply for those jobs.

Fact:

There are more qualified applicants to medical school than they accept.

Therefore, taking minorities with weaker applications DOES NOT MEAN they will be taking unqualified applicants, only that their incoming classes will be racially equitable.

If you can show me a scrap of evidence that people who receive an education thanks to AA are menaces to society, I will be very surprised.
