The German perspective:
Well, I startedwith no idea where I was going to wind up. My reactions were going to be based on other peoples' moves. Spring '01, I saw England open eastward, France open up marginally hostile, and Turkey actively seeking a Russian alliance, but Russia opening up to take Black Sea in autumn and moving majority south rather than a north/south split. Well, the lack of English-French friction is not a good sign for me, so I figure I am going to wind up supporting Russia in the North unless England changes its tune.
F1901, I was toying with moving to Skaggerak, but eventually decided that it was too likely that France would move to Munich, so I covered that instead of Skaggerak. When England went to Skaggerak instead of Barents Sea or Belgium with its non-convoying fleet, I read that as a neon sign advertising England's intent to get a fleet in Sweden, at which point, fairly soon, there's going to be an English fleet in the Baltic and a dead German shortly thereafter. So, my marriage to Russia in Scandinavia was consummated. As Germany, if england is not going after france right away, he's my enemy, end of story.
Come the builds, I was delighted with Russia and dismayed, but not intimidated by France. I saw Russia's two army builds, and thought, "Awesome! Russia realizes that he has to get to Finland, and that I will make sure he keeps Sweden until we can chase the British bastards off the continent and I can get into North Sea. I should be able to hold off France until that point, and then I can turn his seaward flank and unravelthe French defense." Erm, no. When Russia let England into Finland for the sake of taking a Norway impossible to hold for a season in spring, I just about threw my laptop. At that point, my game was over unless England and France got to fighting. The only way I could see to start that up was to focus all of my defense against England and let France reap all the rewards. So, I actively ran away from France in order to keep England static. A desperate tactic, but it's worked before, and I was otherwise screwed.
