The Federal Reserve Balance Sheet
Can someone explain the difference between Quantitative Easing & Credit Easing? I'm not getting it. I get that QE is pumping money into circulation by buying large numbers of treasury bonds, but how is the process different with this "credit easing"? It's still expanding the balance sheet, is it not?

What things do you to keep track of whats going on in a game, from a diplomacy perspective... to work out the likelihood someone is going to "stab" (a phrase I am becoming quickly accustom with) you a few turns in advance.

Pot makes driving safer
Here is a research article that is intriguing.
Medical Marijuana Laws, Traffic Fatalities, and Alcohol Consumption
by D. Mark Anderson, Daniel I. Rees (November 2011)
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
02 Dec 11 UTC
To date, 16 states have passed medical marijuana laws, yet very little is known about their effects. Using state-level data, we examine the relationship between medical marijuana laws and a variety of outcomes. Legalization of medical marijuana is associated with increased use of marijuana among adults, but not among minors. In addition, legalization is associated with a nearly 9 percent decrease in traffic fatalities, most likely to due to its impact on alcohol consumption. Our estimates provide strong evidence that marijuana and alcohol are substitutes.

Here is the link to the entire paper. It doesn't have any pictures or videos FYI
http://ftp.iza.org/dp6112.pdf

"Why does legalizing medical marijuana reduce traffic fatalities? Alcohol consumption appears to play a key role. The legalization of medical marijuana is associated with a 6.4 percent decrease in fatal crashes that did not involve alcohol, but this estimate is not statistically significant at conventional levels. In comparison, the legalization of medical marijuana is associated with an almost 12 percent decrease in any-BAC fatal crashes per 100,000 licensed drivers, and an almost 14 percent decrease in high-BAC fatal crashes per 100,000 licensed drivers.

The negative relationship between legalization of medical marijuana and traffic fatalities involving alcohol is consistent with the hypothesis that marijuana and alcohol are substitutes. In order to explore this hypothesis further, we examine the relationship between medical marijuana laws and alcohol consumption using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and The Brewer’s Almanac. We find that the legalization of medical marijuana is associated with decreased alcohol consumption, especially by 20- through 29-year-olds. In addition, we find that legalization is associated with decreased beer sales, the most popular alcoholic beverage among young adults (Jones 2008)."

Time to smoke a bowl.

The Air Force did a study during Viet Nam regarding marijuana and it's effects on military personnel. In particular, they examined aircraft mechanics and found that, as long as they were not high while working, there was no harmful effects. I heard a retired Air Force Colonel interviewed regarding the matter. Pot is *way* overrated as a harmful drug. Every indication, study, anecdote, etc puts it *clearly* in the "Less (WAY!) Harmful than Alcohol" category. I'm much rather have a guy, say, operate on me after smoking pot the night before than someone that got hammered on alcohol the night before.

While I'm fine with marijuana use (and prefer getting high to drunk), I would not want to drive while high or be in a car where the driver is high.
Driving high is perfectly safe for people experienced in both smoking and driving.

Disagree with that Lando.

While I do support the legalization of marijuana and would prefer someone driving under the influence to be high rather than drunk, you are impaired when high. Mostly too focused on the road ahead of you, not checking mirrors, lane changes, etc. seems to be the most prevalent harmful effect is what I've heard. Not completely safe imo, but again, much better than alcohol.

Disagree with that too, being high definitely impairs your driving skills, although the effect is different compared to alcohol. When it comes to harmfulness of both drugs I wouldn't want to say either one is more or less harmful than the other. Clearly being drunk every now and then is not a big issue and the same goes for being high. Problems only occur when people drink/smoke too frequently.

That being said, I think the biggest problem is that marijuana is still not widely available in the US, which makes it more appealing for people to use it. It's the same as alcohol for youngsters: if you're not yet allowed to drink it's all the more appealing to do it anyway. Marijuana still has somewhat of a reputation in the US, while in reality using it just makes you less receptive, less focused, and somewhat sluggish. It's not really a cool drug to use frequently. Alcohol on the other hand (of course I'm not talking about being completely drunk) has far more appealing short-term effects imo.

In my opinion it's best to legalize marijuana completely- it should be on par with alcohol so people can find a way to fit it into their lives from an early age.

if you are a bad driver you will be a bad driver anyway
alcohol takes away your ability to drive but pot will afect your driving only if you are totally high
i recomend taking marihuana with cocaine so you can drive relaxed but aware at the same time

There are 3 types of liars in this world. Liars, damn liars and statisticians. I don't care what piece of research comes out unless there's an overwhelming amount of research in support of an idea. I can make statistics say what I want them to say. I'm all for leaving the laws the way they are. Too many people want to spend life doped up on something whether it's alcohol, drugs or prescription medication.
Mr_rb (594 D)
02 Dec 11 UTC
Isn't that a bit shortsighted? If you never take the initiative to change laws or are even willing to discuss policy change you're preventing progress.

Let me talk from my own experience and say that (partly) legalization works fine as far as I'm concerned. I do not know many Dutch people above 18 who have not had a joint at some point in their lives, mostly in their teen-years. Very few people bother to use marijuana much more than that though. It's simply not considered to be very enjoyable or exciting. Consumption of marijuana (from the top of my head) per capita in the US is far greater than that in the Netherlands, even though it's legal here.

As far as the statistics of drug-alcohol usage in driving- I'd say any sane person shouldn't drive when he's intoxicated, but given that it evidently does not harm people's driving skills more than alcohol and evidently the two are not often consumed together I see at least no reason to not legalize marijuana based on this data- some reasons why it should be legalized (imo) are reduced consumption on the long-term, less organized criminal activities and increased tax revenues.
If it's really a substitute good for alcohol - which I can believe - then that's just another good argument for legalization, imo. People are going to put shit in their bodies that has no business there irrespective of any given law, might as well let market rationale take over and watch the more lethal drug (alcohol)'s consumption drop in favor of marijuana.

'Consumption of marijuana (from the top of my head) per capita in the US is far greater than that in the Netherlands, even though it's legal here.'

That is a misleading statement. Consumption of MJ per capita in the US was already much higher than in the Netherlands before legalization. Fact is, consumption per capita increased in the Netherlands after legalization. So, more likely than not, consumption per capita in the US would increase. An important detail to consider is that if marijuana is legalized, prices would go down (even if the government imposes huge taxes on it) making it available to more people in higher quantities. While the 'prohibited is more appealing' factor disappears, I am sure the 'cheaper is more appealing' factor outweighs the first one.
Mr_rb (594 D)
02 Dec 11 UTC
That's equally misleading: true, consumption in the US has always been higher than in the Netherlands, and true, consumption per capita in the Netherlands increased after legalization. However, consumption did not increase substantially immediately after the drugs were legalized (or even the decade after it was legalized) and when consumption did increase similar trends were visible in other countries (including the US). Imo the drugs simply became more popular at the time. You cannot conclude that legalization increased consumption and hence you also cannot predict it would significantly increase consumption in the US on the long-term. If you were to legalize it you could indeed tax it significant, but you could also limit supply or set fixed prices.

I guess the biggest issue is that there's no telling how the US market would react to legalization as every country has different attitudes towards alcohol and drug usage, but given that marijuana is not significantly more harmful than alcohol and it (again, here in the Netherlands, so this might not be applicable) has not proven to be a transition drug I would at least consider the possibility.

what if the research is revealing the truth that alcohol is the problem?
i mean :legalized marihuana because is the same (or less) as harmfull as alcohol or desligalized alcohol because is more harmfull of ilegal drugs?

An added advantage to legalization would be that much of the marijuana now sold in the US is produced by Mexican drug cartels, which would be hurt significantly if legalization occurred for domestic produce only (would also make sense given that it's illegal in most producing nations).

With taxation similar to tobacco and alcohol, the price could basically be kept as high as considered desirable, and with licensing and controls on production, quality would improve significantly compared to the current situation. Pollutant in marijuana can cause a whole range of negative effect.

If you do legalize though, please don't make the same mistake the Netherlands did. Legalize production too. In the Netherlands we now have the bizarre situation that the sale in controlled outlets is legal (actually illegal, but the law is not enforced), but the producers are criminal by necessity.

For perspective: I'm Dutch, and have never used any drug other than alcohol.

wait, is TC pro-legalization?
I am not going to say I have smoked marijuana, and I am not going to say I have never driven home under the influence of marijuana; but (!), I will say that I would not call it safer. I was experiencing paranoia the entire drive-- worried I would hit someone, worried a cop would pull me over, worried I would fall asleep, worried I would break concentration and not pay attention, etc. Safer than getting drunk, yes; safe to drive on, I would say no.

It isn't safe to drive when your stoned.
The reason pot makes driving safer according to the article is that people smoke pot at home, thus they aren't driving.
People go out to bars to drink.

Get stoned all you want (I do), but don't think it is safe to drive when you are stoned. Just get stoned at home and chill on foot.
